Super big deal.

Fantastic :D I hope the PS4 becomes a target for Monkey.

Seems unlikely to be a generally available target based on the current system for getting access to the SDK. The forms strongly hint that you're required to be an established business.

Can't comment on the SDK part but...

The forms strongly hint that you're required to be an established business.

This seems very similar to the process I had to go through for XBLIG. It was recommended that I register a limited company but I just got myself a US tax code.

Either way, I am hopeful, releasing something on the XBox 360 was one of the most exciting dev experiences I've had!

Noob question:

Are you a US citizen? I've always wondered how to do that process of getting a US Tax id. Do I need to fly to the US to do something like that?

Thanks :)

The whole thing is skewed towards wanting you to be a business. The US part asks for an employer tax ID not just a tax ID. No idea if they just give those out to anyone who asks. The Europe/Australasia forms (https://www.companyregistration.playstation.com/SCEInternetApplications/AreaNewLicensee/MainSystem/CFModules/NewLicensee/snl_master_template.cfm?v_which_region=scee&v_which_form=GAME) request proof of legal entity and release history. They require you to have a static IP "registered to your company".

I'm sure it's possible to navigate all of that but it does put it a bit beyond something that Monkey could support out of the box as a target unless they change the process and make the SDK open to all users.

iLovePixel: I am a UK citizen and got an ITIN following this guide : http://steveproxna.blogspot.co.uk/2010/04/xna-and-tax.html

It was a slow and frustrating process!

That all said, I think Muddy is right and the Playstation process is more involved/strict.

While out of the box support would be cool maybe Sony isn't quite ready to be as open as say Apple are. If you have a commercial business it would be in your own interest to write your own target for PS4 if you had a serious desire to publish Monkey projects on it (and possibly work with other commercial indies using Monkey to maintain it privately). Monkey is getting pretty mature and I doubt will have as many major changes as it has had in the past so probably it wouldn't cost too much to build and maintain targets which cannot legally be distributed or publicly maintained.

I am hoping Sony will get to the point where they allow more access to their tools and publishing methods. We'll have to wait and see.

If you are not yet a commercial developer it would be in your own interest to learn more about the business aspects and get yourself setup for future opportunities. Getting things such as a US bank account is very useful if you are a foreigner, and legally speaking you want everything to be rock solid to be doing this for the long term.
