MP3 vs M4A

Which should I use?

I've had a play around with MP3s but it seems pretty bad on looping sounds (gap at start/end). Is M4A any better? I don't seem to have anything installed at the moment that will convert to M4A format.

All my stuff is in OGG format a present and I don't want to fart about converting it to M4A if its not going to be any different to MP3 format.

I have come across something like this before. As it turns out when converting a ogg file to mp3 using Audacity the MP3 file gets some extra data added at the beginning usually silence. See what results you get by converting you ogg to wav format.

Wav is a definite no-no due to the filesize.

I thought I'd solved the MP3 problem by saving it as variable bitrate - it worked in Soundforge, but in Monkey there was still a brief silence before the track repeated.

@GfK

Give the tool at the following link a try (suggested to me by another Monkey user, Volker), it solved my MP3 looping problems.

Hope it helps.

Jason.

I've been using my old friend: http://www.dbpoweramp.com/dmc.htm for these conversions.

Of course SOX also comes handy.http://sox.sourceforge.net/

Didn't have any luck at all with that. It complains that it can't start the MP3 backend or something. I've tried numerous different versions of LAME but it just refuses to play ball. The docs say it automatically uses the LAME encoder that comes with Winamp Pro but I don't fancy buying that, just to do this, as I'll never use it otherwise.

[edit] Actually, the commandline version works, the UI one doesn't.

Hello GfK,

Just tried the GUI version again and it seems to work here.

The encoder that is required also comes with the free version of Winamp. (In plugins\enc_lame.dll)

Anyway, did it solve your looping issues? So far it is the only solution that I have found.

Jason.

No but think that's mainly because i don't really know what I'm doing!

Just letting you know I tried the mp3loop utility that QuickSilva suggested and the resulting mp3 seem to work well in flash. Haven't tried ios yet as I would have to transfer the project over to the mac and as I have to be up early in the morning for work, so I want be doing it till I get back home tomorrow evening.
