I think maybe monkey2 is a more suitable language for this style of interface.

If you are talking about code that formats socket datagrams and the like, I suppose thrift could be useful, but for binary interface mapping I would consider protocol buffers a better strategy. I have never heard of thrift, is it popular? It looks like a 20 year old apache thing.
