If you love the old school style games from the 80s I have found at neat little free, online tool for creating pixel graphics.

You can find it here

There is also a similar app for the ipad

here

(paid) and it was this that led me to see what was available for the desktop.

Cool - I need something better for my Desktop pix-art work, maybe this is it, will have to check it out.

But for iPad, I LOVE Sprite Something:

Very cool! Thanks for these links! I'm always looking for ways to make my graphics (easier).

I've been using the GIMP. Its fairly complex to learn at first, but after a while (like anything else) you get used to how it works. To have something that loads up and is ready to go with something quick, this would be nice :)

This one looks great. I like the terrain preview. Adobe Air based (paid):

I'm still using Paint Shop Pro 7 here ^_^

I tend to mix PSP and Illustrator when drawing things - but for pixel art PSP is still the best there is for me.

Just tick the "show brush outline" in the tools option and then you suddenly have a very precise pixel 'pointer' on screen. Adding the grid you can set to any size you want (usually 8x8 or 32x32), I've yet to see a better tool for the job.

(I used it to do the graphics on my 'Escape from Alcatraz' game, only title screen and other stuff were made on Illustrator)

I use asesprite.

Sensei(Posted 2013) [#9]
If you wanna do nice pixel art, use Grafx2 http://code.google.com/p/grafx2/
Been using it for years and it's one of the best pixel drawing apps out there.
Also my 2nd choice would be the same as zoqfotpik, Asesprite.

if anyone knows Dpaint or Ppaint from the amiga, and liked those, then he/she should checkout This programm: http://www.cosmigo.com/promotion/index.php

it can be understand as a remake of those great old paint tools

i use this for all pixel tasks, for me its the best index graphic oriented image editor.
it got also alot of features, and a very long feature list, wich would let this post explode.

but the tile map preview is also within, also a tilemap editor with an easy to code save format, binary and text based possible.

also creating animations with this tool is absolutely good solved, with swichting through frames with keys and have a onion skin view of the other frames, wich is all configurable.

also you can make custom grid shapes, as example for hexagons or whatever shape you desire as grid, instead of only the standard box stuff

Another vote for ProMotion. I have used it for years. A good solid pixel art tool.

Ooh that looks quite interesting BigAnd. I'll check it out later tonight!
