Hi folks,

For .ogg and .mp3 files, what kind of rates do people think give a good balance between size and quality for sound fx and music?

For music, I've been trying q3 for ogg, and q5 (variable, 100-150Kbs) using Audacity.

What do people think? About right? What do you use and why?

CHeers,
Tom

hi,

it's whatever sounds good for the platform you're targetting. VBR is going to sound better for the same bitrate as CBR is, however, it has an extra CPU decoding overhead. Ogg sounds pretty good even at low bitrates between 80-128kbps, thanks in part to better acoustic modelling when compressing than most MP3 encoding implementations, so you can push that a little lower and worry less.

Sound effects can have variable quality depending on length, frequency of use, and type of sound used. Use your best judgement in these cases.
