Does anyone know of a good tutorial or info on programming some awesome looking "fire" effects in a game?

Right now I'm some simple sprites for various burning fires, or stages of fire, etc, but I've seen some games where the fire is much more random and interesting - it appears hot and it burns.

My game badly needs something like this I think, any advice?

Take a look at Timeline FX.

Library: Fire and Smoke

It's sprite based although, until Pete, hopefully, will
port his module to monkey.

Thanks, that might just do the trick.

This might be worth a look as well. Cheaper but possibly not as extensive and mac only:
