One of my clients that runs a very small comerce wants to move away from their current shared hosting at Dreamhost becouse it's behaving really badly, slow, it's lots of time unavailable, etc etc.
I would like to suggest they move to a dedicated server, as they're not happy with the site begin a bit slow, but they have a very limited traffic and do not consume lots of bandwidth and most dedicated servers services I see are too expensive and too big on bandwith and storage.
Does anybody know of a good hosting service for small sites at a reasonable price? It requires to run PHP, MySql etc. (the usual bits on a standarized server running Debian or similar)

Thanks!

Have you/they talked to Dreamhost about the issues? It could well be a simple configuration issue if their site is really as minimal as you say.

If they're not happy with Dreamhost and want to try a sideways move to a similarly priced service then I recommend Webfaction. They focus on being developer friendly, which means very configurable hosting and knowledgeable and responsive support staff. It also means they're on the ball with issues due to shared resources being hogged by individual users. I don't host commerce sites with them but I've rarely heard a bad word said about their uptime.

Linode is excellent.

LiquidWeb is a little more expensive, but they are also one of the very best you can rely on.

If you put CloudFlare on top you can make everything even faster.

@muddy_shoes: Yes, I've talked to them, I have even requested the site to be moved to another shared server, but it seems they having issues not only with site being alive, but also with emails not being delivered, etc. It looks very bad.
I have most of my sites there too, and I'm not experiencing as many issues as my client, but I have to say that the emails not being delivered thing on Dreamhost is not something new for me, they break email delivery every once in a while.

I¡ll take a look to webfaction. I know of linode and love it, but I've only used VPS there. It may be a good option too, but I think the managed service is expensive, and I don't think unmanaged is an option for my client.

Been with them for a long time and had only a handful of issues all of which are very shortlived. As far as various hosts over the years shared/vps/dedicated/free/cloud, tsohost are the best.

I've used Dreamhost in the past for VPS stuff. While their support is pretty responsive and good, i've had to contact them a bit too much for downtime and lag, and other issues. Got tired of doing that so had to drop them.

On the side, I've been using Hostmonster for several years now, never had any issues with them.

I have tried some of the big boys like rackspace and softlayer over the years and I am currently using serverpronto. I have been with them fora couple of years now. Their prices are incredible for dedicated hardware. They have some small ones for $49/month. They have always been very responsive if I needed something and they have never gone down.
