There's a (very) critical zero day exploit in Java 7:

Java was not pre-installed on my Window 7 machine. Despite some occasional frustration I've never been seriously tempted to change that. This has interfered with some features I wanted. But they were all on the level of entertainment, not anything I needed.

I need it for minecraft.

Oracle has really been having issues with Java lately. It's been one exploit after another. I'd be surprised if you didn't already have Java disabled from the exploits found in September and October.

Java may have issues, but so does every other system, you don't NEED to disable it, you just need to be careful what sites you go to, just like running executable files, just gotta be careful!

If you don't need it you really should disable it in the browsers you use. There is no "safe place" when a 0-day like this happens. Say an admin of a popular site you go to is compromised - the site they admin is changed to serve up the exploit. Boom. You're owned too. And even with working AV exploits can distribute malware which is ahead of the curve of detection.

Uninstalling Java itself from your system isn't as necessary. Assuming you have it disabled in your browser and you're not running everything you come across online you will probably be safe.
