This sort of hemming and hawing is not good. There is a huge infrastructure necessary for developers, and the guys who make that infrastructure have to be able to plan ahead to know what's going to be what.

Presumably they're going to keep up with Metro? But how do we know that? Personally I'm ecstatic about the idea of developing for Windows tablets but uncertainty (not necessarily on my part but on the part of tool makers) puts the ability to do that into doubt.

Who needs Windows 8 retail? If you are targeting PCs, stuff you develop for and on Windows 7 will work fine. Most Windows users have OEM-installed versions.
