On Mac an underscore character in Ted is invisible (or grey at least) until you click on the line its on. See here:

on my macbook it's not invisible but semitransparent, almost invisible, confusing at times.

This is due to the default font size - I'll change it but in the meantime you can change font size.

Yep. Nudging the font up a point size fixed it.
