Hi
I cant find a program to record my blitzmax game when it runs.
Ive looked online and dl several programs saying they are free
but they are not, just a trial version. they have a logo ontop of recorded video or cant save the file off.

is there a freeware program to record a windows game?

sorry if this question has been asked before and answered but I cant
find it on the search on these forums.

Thanks
Dibble

Just google Fraps.
It is a free Software which records your games, just run Fraps and then your game and you will see a yellow number in one of the window corners. The number turns red while recording.

But there are problems too:
You are only able to record 14 mins
and the size of the recorded video is very high.

That's because it uses a fast compression algorithm instead of a 'good' one -- but of course you can always convert the resulting video to a more efficient codec after you're done recording.

note that the full version of fraps isn't free, there are some restrictions to the trail version.

For a free one, see http://camstudio.org/

Everyone should have PixelProspector bookmarked. It is an indispensable resource for everything to do with indie game development.

I'm not quite sure what you mean. I can record with Fraps without end - I have done 2 hour videos with it.

However, YouTube accounts that are not verified (or have bad copyright standing) have a limit of 15 minutes per upload.

Fraps is commercial. Demo may be free but restrictions apply, plus a watermark.

Fraps does not use compression - it simply grabs images and stores them uncompressed.

I use fraps. It works great but can slow down your fps on your game. It's widely used on many games for recording for youtube.

It has not once slowed down any FPS rate for me.

Recording to a second hard drive can improve your experience with FRAPS if you have a less powerful computer, or have programs or the OS making heavy use of the main HD. The more powerful your computer is, the fewer problems you will have running FRAPS while playing the game you are recording.

As to the fact that FRAPS isn't free, well you get what you pay for.

You'll need to transcode the uncompressed video file that FRAPS outputs to a more heavily compressed format. Personally I use the free tool Avidemux ( http://avidemux.org/ http://avidemux.sourceforge.net/ ) for that. For Youtube I usually convert video to MPEG-4 AVC (h.264), audio to AAC (Faac), and use an MP4 container format.

I don't honestly see the 'fascination' with FRAPS. I think it's rubbish and unnecessarily intensive.

There are much better solutions around. Personally my favourite free utility for recording video content from windows is ScreenVirtuosoPro

Fraps is awesome. It is one of the few pieces of software I have bought.

You can record your screen with vlc player and the commandline.
Sometimes I use it for work and can record 8 hours of video and the movie is only a few hundred megs.
