Hi my Blitz friends. I finally finished my turn-based dungeon crawler Hack, Slash, Loot. It's been tough going at times, but I'm pleased with the results. If you'd like to try it out then you can grab the demo below or visit the website.

Stunning and awesome! You have done a magnificent job!

This is a lot of fun. I will definitely be ordering this within the next couple of weeks!!

I would love it if you would start another thread and let us know how it was getting the Linux version ready to go. Any problems encountered, special issues, etc.

I'm not sure it would be worth a new thread. I simply write the game on my Mac, using the default IDE, and when I'm ready to put out a new build I fire up Linux, or Windows for that version, and hit compile. The only difference between the three builds is where it puts the save game file, and that is easily handled by Brucey's excellent bah.Volumes module.

sweet it's like a top down TSR game that from the look of it has a better system.

Kryzon(Posted 2012) [#5]
You have a sharp eye for aesthetics, esp. the little details, like putting the little icons for each platform executable, the layout and formatting of the post etc.

I like the wallpaper - especially the style - , but I think it could do even better with a background representing the type of environment that those guys would be facing, like brick walls with torches, glowing eyes in the dark etc.

The pixel art is awesome; that first screen with the textured scroll... precious.
It's not my kind of game, but definitely my kind of art direction.

All that is missing is an Android version :D

Matty(Posted 2012) [#7]
Looks good, I'm working on something similar at work for the Android platform (a roguelike of sorts) - so it will be good to have a look at this and try out..

Wiebo(Posted 2012) [#8]
Congratulations on the release, Oddball!

Wiebo(Posted 2012) [#9]
Also, congrats on the RPS mention. That always helps :)

Oddball(Posted 2012) [#10]
Thanks Wiebo. I was pretty gobsmacked when the Rock, Paper, Shotgun review popped up in my Twitter feed. Here's the link for anyone who's interested. http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/01/24/impressions-hack-slash-loot/

Oh wow, I had no idea this was a Blitz game (assuming it is actually a blitz game)! Either way, congratulations!

I've just bought it based on the video alone.

Oddball(Posted 2012) [#12]
Yes, it's Blitz Max to be precise. It makes developing cross platform games painless.

Paul "Taiphoz"(Posted 2012) [#13]
I love that art style in the logo, the game itself not my cup of tea but it does look good nice work m8.

Possibly consider a HD version with bigger tiles and sprites with a little more detail where you can use that cartoon style from the logo actually in the game, that would be sweet.

RifRaf(Posted 2012) [#14]
I would love a little game like this that had turned based online multi player.

I played it for about an hour.. gets better as you get used to the controls and picking up/using items and gear.

Good job!

Oddball(Posted 2012) [#15]
It's now available on Desura and Indievania if you prefer those outlets.

taumel(Posted 2012) [#16]
Congratulations!

I gave the OS X version a try and i liked the visual style. What i disliked was the tiny screen sizes until you a.o. used the magnifying glass and fiddling around with objects, i found this quite cumbersome, getting them, comparing stats and so on. I only played two levels and from those i found the dungeons a little bit too generic.

It's certainly cool for a BlitzMax project. When i compare it to other indie games i lack some more variation, atmoshere and a better dealing with your items, an inventory doesn't seem to exist, right?

To be honest, i'm not sure if it's worth $10 to me at this stage but i wish you the best with it, you definately should try to get it into a bundle.

Finally out, just bought this a few minutes ago, LOVE it. Great work.

Raz(Posted 2012) [#18]
Oddball,

the att / dmg fields for, for example, melee weapons What does the att field mean exactly? I get what the damage field is, but what's attack about?

Raz(Posted 2012) [#19]
Yay :D Once you're able to build some momentum the game gets quite easy quite quickly. As much as I love it, I feel the power up that lets you have two moves per turn is overpowered, unless you mess up it basically makes you invulnerable.

It also has some balancing issues, you also get respawned with monsters in a room so that you don't have a chance to survive.

mkg(Posted 2012) [#21]
Very impressive. Good luck with it.

Oddball(Posted 2012) [#22]
It has been a crazy month and a half. HSL has been a huge success and the game is now also available on GamersGate and the Mac App Store. It's also being prepped for a couple of other services, so hopefully more news to come soon.

I have tried your game and even if i like hack and slash in dungeons i don't like turn based games. (but i like the graphics style of your game)

To me, this is really surprising to hear this kind of game can be a success, i guess there are many people on this planet with a variety tastes.

Congrats to you and to your game. Your experience is inspiring. :)

Why0Why(Posted 2012) [#24]
It is great to hear that it is being successful. I have been playing again with programming a roguelike in Max. Been having fun doing it. Almost done with map gen.

Oddball(Posted 2012) [#25]
The game is now in the latest Indie Royale bundle, and will be coming to Steam soon.

Jason W.(Posted 2012) [#26]
I will put down $20 for the bundle.

Thanks for the heads-up, Oddball.

Jason

ps - still looking for an android version ;)

Why0Why(Posted 2012) [#27]
Purchased the bundle too. I love these things!

*(Posted 2012) [#28]
Bought it too :D

Oddball(Posted 2012) [#29]
When I said 'coming to Steam soon' I actually meant in the coming weeks, but I've just been informed that it's gone live today - http://store.steampowered.com/app/207430/

Getting the game running on Steam was actually quite an effort, and I got some assistance from jkrankie and SkidRacer so thanks to them for that.

*(Posted 2012) [#30]
what is required to get it running on steam?

maybe someone should write a guide :)

Raz(Posted 2012) [#31]
Just registering my interest in a blitz to Steam guide :)

If MonkeyMax (module to translate Monkey code in to BlitzMax code) is up to it, I'd like to use BlitzMax to distribute my game on PC and if it can be via Steam as well, even better!

Oddball(Posted 2012) [#32]

Signing an NDA.

What I can say though is that if you don't require any of the Steam features, achievements, cloud, high scores, etc. then nothing is required on BlitzMax's end. There is a thread elsewhere in these forums about adding Steam features to a BlitzMax app which helped me greatly.

The Hack, Slash, Loot OST by Jack Menhorn is now available for download.

And a hi-res of the cover by Sara Gross for those that like those things.

Oddball(Posted 2012) [#34]
HSL got its first print review, that I'm aware of, today. It's a half page review in issue 242 of PC Gamer. Seeing this made my day.

Wiebo(Posted 2012) [#35]
Awesome :) btw: I bought it in the Steam sales. Very nice game.

Spades of Kudos!

Imperium(Posted 2013) [#41]
I wonder if Multiplayer would work well for this. Rogue-likes are kind of made for that sort of thing. Absolutely love the look of this and all of it's pixely goodness!
