Hi all,

I've been mucking about with a climbing game for some time now (!) and have decided to make it free so I can concentrate on other stuff.
If you get a moment grab it at :-

and let me know what you think.

Quick video of latest build here :-

Coded in good old Blitz3D.

cheers,

Mark

Haha,
Oh my god, thats way too cruel that you made the character let go with both hands :D

The character animations are real cool :P

Warpy(Posted 2011) [#3]
Excellent!

It's enormously hard to control, though.

Howdy,

@col - re:making the guy fall off on purpose - my kids seem to think it's acceptable !

@Warpy - re:big difficulty in control - This troubles me. In your (highly respected might I add) opinion, what aspect of the control is most problamatic ? It's an area I spent quite a bit of time on. (Not that faffing with something on and off for 3 years automatically makes something 'right' of course).

nice animation!
you should put lovers leap in there:

Yeah that's a cool idea and your implementation is sweet as well.

I wonder what the drop factor is tho, does each limb has stamina that drops over time until he falls , or is it a random chance to slip from a hole ? what's the challenge how do you make mistakes ?

I love it :D

Mark - the controls are definitely the hardest thing about a climbing game. You've definitely done much better than my attempt several years ago.

Picking limbs and then holds with the mouse is pretty hard, but not too bad. The main issue is picking footholds that are hidden behind the other leg, which happens quite a lot. I suppose moving the camera helps a bit with that, but it's fiddly. Could Q and E be bound to do 45 degree swings of the camera for as long as they're held down?

Did you try making a system to guess which limb would be most appropriate for a particular handhold? Or, something like clicking on a hold and selecting a limb from a radial menu would be a quicker solution. That would also allow you to make the dude transparent when the mouse is over him, solving my first complaint too.

A few times I wanted the guy to push out from the rock so his limbs would straighten out. Is that worth adding? I haven't played enough to see how the getting-tired thing works and how the body is allowed to contort itself.

A panic button to cancel a move and return the selected limb to whichever hold it was on before would be good. It would allow you to get a sense of how your weight will shift before committing to a move, like you often do in real climbing.

Is it deliberate that you can only do one move at once?

I'm beginning to get the hang of the controls now, though. They're certainly not bad.

Hi All,

@Adam : Lovers leap is awesome. Have you seen the video on youtube of Dan Osman climbing it ? (I use the word climbing loosely)

@Taiphoz : The physics engine reports on how much stress is being put through each joint that is created wherever each hand or foot is on the wall. It uses this stress figure to reduce the limbs energy.

@Spike314 @ Cheers - thanks for taking a look.

@Warpy : I remember swapping notes on climbing games with you an age ago. Your implementation (i.e. the circles if I remember correctly) were spot on, but i wanted to try and get away as far as possible from onscreen gui stuff.
I had an idea whereby wherever the mouse is hovering over the climbing wall, there is a 'halo' around it which makes the climber become transparent - so by moving the pointer around you can see all the available holds without moving the camera. A bit like x-ray vision i guess.
You do have the ability to just click holds - you don't need to preselect a limb at all. The game will make a choice of which limb is best (it's not always right but with more time, etc, etc).
Also, using WASD you can get the guy to straighten his limbs - climbing is very hard without using these keys i find.
I appreciate you taking the time - thanks!

Mark

Warpy(Posted 2011) [#10]
Ahh, I thought if you didn't select a limb it just used the last one.

I've been using WASD, but there are some situations where the dude gets locked hanging to one side.

Yeah, Dan Osman was the man (for a short while). Can't believe people run up that stuff, I can barely climb it.

I thought about this as a game rather as a sim, and I think you could make it interesting by making it more like Cliffhanger-- you could add spiders and obstacles that you have to climb around, save people, grab treasure, etc. Mountain goats. Find precious wildflowers. etc.

I've yet to try the game (but I've downloaded it, and it looked great in the old videos); however, the above comment reminded me of these videos I watched last week, which "scared the shirt off of me"...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=80Cd_0y6gOk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7k4Xk1mEwmI

(Full-screen them for full effect.)

None of these people are using harnesses (for the most part), and it literally *terrifies* me when they start to look down... or around... or up.

I've found myself shaking and nauseous at the top of a ladder while painting! The idea of moving hand-over-hand, with nothing to stop me falling, at 1500-2000 ft, is just... oh, God... I... HEEE-UURRGHHHHHH!

(Back on-topic, I will try it soon!)
