Hello everyone.

I have not posted anything here for quite sometime, because
I have been so busy working on my first 'real' game.
This game is far above all my previous ones, because I actually
went to quite a bit of trouble to draw the graphics and animations

And thus, the graphics might not be great, but are at least, fair.
Also before posting this here, I had a few select play testers help
me work out the bugs.

This is a remake of the NES game, Dragon Spirit, the new legend.
I originally was going to enter this in the Retro Remakes
competition, but I couldn't get it done in time.

Dragon Spirit is still far from complete, but the first two levels are
done, and now that I have gotten the rest of the game pretty
refined, the next 8 levels will not take long to complete.

Anyways,
I hope you enjoy the game, and please enter the How to Play
section found in the options menu if you have any questions.

Use the arrow keys, and Enter to navigate the menus.

Enjoy!

I was wondering what happened with this, I'll give it a try after work.

The turtle looks cool by the way.

Mortiis(Posted 2009) [#3]
Nice usage of photoshop filters and bevel :)

D4NM4N(Posted 2009) [#4]
Like it. You have recreated the 8-bit 'feel' (except for the hi-res :D).

Also kinda reminds me of the classic ega/vga16 appogee games.

GaryV(Posted 2009) [#5]
I really like this. Let me know if you would ever consider doing sprites for $$

WERDNA(Posted 2009) [#6]
Nice, very positive feedback so far ^_^

I'm glad your all liking it.

I do not consider myself much of an artist, because although
these graphics aren't bad, they could be better. It takes me quite a
while to draw these, the Turtle took me a week to figure out how I
wanted him to look, and another week to actually draw him.
Also I use the Paint Shop pro textures quite a bit, and other short
cuts like Bevel.

But I'm glad that you like the graphics.
And I would consider doing sprites for money GaryV, although I would
only charge a little bit for them ^_^

Thanks everyone,

WERDNA

Hello,

I gave it a play, and for the most part everything went well.

Things that are not good:
-I get a blank screen when I start... no title screen or anything. Once I click and press the keyboard a bit, after a few seconds it takes me to what looks like a story screen, then the game begins. If I exit of the pause menu, I see the title screen. I'm running Windows Vista Home I believe...
-There should be something to display what powerup you have, because there are a bunch of them and it would be interesting to know which ones you are currently using.
-Some of the sprites look good, some don't... The dragon and most enemies look cool but some of the environment features (and those little green ground guys) don't seem to fit...
-Cool music, but sound effects would be nice

Things that were good:
-The tutorial was awesome, nice to see you put some time into that and not just write up an instruction screen. Very well done.
-Interfaces were for the most part clean and understandable,
-Its rather fun and difficult.
-The bombs are well done, as are the powerups. I can see you spent a lot of time on them, especially with the heads and the flank guys.

I really hope you get to polishing this up and finishing it with the diligence you started with.

Wow, thanks for the review Sauer!

Now I'll give my response to the problems you listed one by one.

1 I don't know why it starts with a blank screen, I am using Windows XP so don't be too surprised if this has problems with Vista. I'll try
though to do what I can to make my game work well on Vista or XP.

2 A powerup display sounds good, I can probably fit that in next to your score display.

3 If you don't mind could you post a list of which sprites you don't like?
I am perfectly happy to change whichever ones suck ^_^

4 Sound effects will be added, I even have all of them on hand. I just
didn't have time to add them in this version.

Glad you liked the tutorial. All my play testers couldn't figure out that
you need bombs to hurt ground enemys, so I thought a tutorial would
be great to explain that, lol.

Glad you liked the interfaces.

Glad you think its fun, and as to the difficulty, there are 3 different modes you can set it on.
Noob, Normal, And Extreme. The Extreme difficulty mode currently does
nothing, because I figure the game is hard enough as it is and I can
just add that later.

Lol I spent days doing the power ups :(
It took me awhile to get the images just right.

And as to polishing this up, I certainly will ^_^
The next version will contain several small changes, and the next few
levels.
(If you win level 2, you will notice that you are sent to level 3, which is
mostly complete save for the enemys.)

Enjoy everyone,

WERDNA

I didn't get too far in the game but the cactus guys need work. And I don't think they suck per say they just don't blend with the rest of the game.

And it sounds like you have things under control as far as the negatives go so good luck.

And you are aware you packed the source with this? Not like I could read it anyway due to the lack of indenting :P

WERDNA(Posted 2009) [#10]
LOL, yes I am aware that I packed the source with it ^_^

Check the documents folder for more info concerning source code,
COPYRIGHT, etc.

Mortiis(Posted 2009) [#11]
Oh by the way, if you convert those wave files to ogg vorbis, you can dramatically lower the download size.

WERDNA(Posted 2009) [#12]
Thanks for the tip Mortiis. Conveniently I happen to be able to do
that with Audacity sound editor ^_^

Nate the Great(Posted 2009) [#13]
hmmm it was very fun although I am not good at these games and couldn't get past the first level :(
1. I like the 8-bit high res feel.
2. It is very unique and well put together.
3. I like the overall feel eg. GUI Music sprites etc.

WERDNA(Posted 2009) [#14]
If you look in the documents folder, you will see that the game does
contain one cheat code. By holding T and Y you will skip through the
current level.

I'm glad that so far at least, everyone is enjoying it ^_^
