Hello everyone,

Last week(end) I felt like making something a little different, although I have
made something similar once before.

It is kind of an interactive screen-saver. You can either sit and watch, or you
can interact - move the camera, change views.

Run the program FleetSelector0.25.exe which brings up a standard windows GUI allowing
you to set the number of ships (don't go too high!) and an optional number of minutes
to play for and whether to shutdown the PC when it is finished (type 1 into the relevant
box if you wish it do so). Press Start.

Once in the environment the demo will start in the cockpit/on the bridge of one of the ships.
Using the mouse allows you to look around (left/right).
Pressing SPACE bar takes you to an external free-look view. Move the mouse to
look around, press the left mouse button to move forwards, right mouse button to move backwards.
Pressing SPACE again takes you to a chase view. Pressing tab puts you inside of the
current 'chase' ship. Pressing the up/down arrows switches to the next/previous chase ship (both
in external chase view and internal cockpit/bridge view).

As I said, it's not really a game, just something that I made because I wanted to watch
some space battles.

Regarding the media - it's all my own stuff but I don't mind if you use it in something else of your
own.

(oh - particles.png is from particle candy, other than that it is all my own stuff.)

Press ESCAPE to quit.

Matty(Posted 2008) [#3]
Works for me.

Ross C(Posted 2008) [#4]
Working here too. Can't download as i'm at work unfortunetly. Looks cool though.

GW(Posted 2008) [#5]
Ya, Link is very dead

plash(Posted 2008) [#6]
Link is not dead.

Get your facts straight!

Matty(Posted 2008) [#7]
I'm a bit confused as to how some people can reach the link while others cannot?

therevills(Posted 2008) [#8]
Works for me too ;-)

Its cool btw... sometimes the movement of the ships are not that smooth...

dmaz(Posted 2008) [#9]
worked fine for me.

the people who are having the problem: are you clicking the link or copy and pasting?

from a cmd line try:
nslookup home.swiftdsl.com.au

Loktar(Posted 2008) [#10]
Nice, I eventually want to get around to making a screensaver like this as well, seems like it'd be fun to program the AI for it.

Matty(Posted 2008) [#11]
Hi Loktar - yes programming the AI for something like this is fun and much easier than most other genres due to the wide open spaces.

slenkar(Posted 2008) [#12]
I did nslookup home.swiftdsl.com.au

but the result dissapears from the screen too quickly

I tried clicking the link and copying and pasting

Nate the Great(Posted 2008) [#13]
it seems that it isnt accesable in all countries. I noticed this happens a lot.

Zenith(Posted 2008) [#14]
Hey Matty, this is pretty neat. But it mostly runs too fast on my computer, so I don't really get to see much of the action before it passes it. Neat idea too, I like it. There should be a cinematic camera mode, eh? :)

I'd like to try writing something like this sometime, only with evolving neural nets for the ships etc, haha. :D

Matty(Posted 2008) [#15]
Thanks Zenith,
I just bought myself a fancy flight joystick so I can have a go at blasting the enemy myself...not 100% sure where this project is going but it is fun to fly around and shoot stuff (not available in the version above).

John Cage(Posted 2008) [#16]
I tried several times - and just wanted to test this out - but the link is dead; sorry.

Matty(Posted 2008) [#17]
Link works for me still, perhaps try pasting the link below into your browser:

http://home.swiftdsl.com.au/~tmalcolm/tom/fleet/Fleet.zip

The only difference is I have replaced the %7E with a ~ symbol because Blitz's forums don't display links with a ~ symbol in them properly.

I shall soon have a video on display of some progress on this project....

Htbaa(Posted 2008) [#18]
Nice. But after a while my screen went black and it seemed that it crashed.

slenkar(Posted 2008) [#19]
I cant even access http://home.swiftdsl.com.au/ for some reason,

Matty(Posted 2008) [#20]
