P.U.K.I Game Engine!(For Blitz 3D Users)

Community Forums/Showcase/P.U.K.I Game Engine!(For Blitz 3D Users)

WERDNA(Posted 2008) [#1]
At last its finally done!

This little project was inspired by the one and only, PUKI!
I was originally going to do a small platformer game starring Puki,
just kind of as a joke. but as I started making the game, I realized
that how the code was coming along, it really more resembled a
a platforming game engine. It was very versatile, and very easy
to modify.
So I decided to change it from a platforming game, to the P.U.K.I
game Engine.(P.U.K.I standing for Platformer Unlimited Kinetic Integrator)

And how this works is thus,

All of the main code is hidden away in one of the source folders.
The only bit of code that the programmer needs to worry about is
a small file named P.U.K.I containing several varaibles and a detailed
description of each one.
All you have to do is change the variables values to change something
about the game.

For example, there is a variable named JumpMax. By changing its
value, you change how high the player will be able to jump in your
game.
Then there are variables to control the scrolling direction of your game,
the're variables to control when the player loses a life, and so on.

But thats not all!
The most important part of any platforming game is, of course, the
levels!

To make a level, all you have to do, is draw out your platforming
level however you like in any basic paint program, change one of
the variables values to the name of the level image, and thats it!
If you run the program your level will work perfectly!

And the same goes for the players image, all you have to do is
draw the players image,(animated or not) change a few of the variables
values, and run the program!

Of course this is only version 0.1 of this game engine, so there are
limits. You cannot currently add enemys or items to your game, so
you mainly have to rely on making your game scroll quickly to make
it challenging for the player.
Also you can't throw in moving platforms, as of yet.

So mainly all this version is for, is to give you a basic idea of where
this project is headed.

Controls for your games are as follows,(In later versions you will be able to set the controls yourself.)

Left And Right Arrow Keys move the player left and right.

Up Arrow Key jumps.

SpaceBar takes a ScreenShot.

And thats it!

I have include 4 sample levels, 2 of them that scroll upwards, and
2 of them that scroll sideways. I have also include 2 sample music
files, and one sample player image.

I look forward to your feedback,(Especially negative feedback, for it will help me make this a better game engine.)
And thanks for taking the time to read this somewhat Lengthy post.

Enjoy!

Heres some screenshots of 2 platformer games that I made using this engine.

And heres the next level,

Both of these are included as sample levels in the download.
And the little character wearing a night cap is, of course, PUKI!

This little project was inspired by the one and only, PUKI!
...and that's where I stopped reading. Although I did notice there wasn't a download link.

WERDNA(Posted 2008) [#3]
LOL, Sorry.

I just added one.

I guess I was rather flustered and forgot the key feature of this post.

plash(Posted 2008) [#4]
o.O

Who was John Galt?(Posted 2008) [#5]
Okay this is scary! I'm sensing a mutual growing love between Puki and the guy he knows affectionately as 'Walnut!'

slenkar(Posted 2008) [#6]

WERDNA(Posted 2008) [#7]
Screen Shots have been added, of 2 of the sample levels that are
included in the download.

Have Fun!

Naughty Alien(Posted 2008) [#8]
..well..its too bad because Puki fall in love with Leadwerks engine, and after absence he had, totally push away B3D he use to defend soo passionately ..

Ked(Posted 2008) [#9]
Wow. What's with all of the white space around the walnut picture. My eyes!

LineOf7s(Posted 2008) [#10]
AdBlock, again, comes to the rescue.

Ross C(Posted 2008) [#11]
Maybe better graphics on the screenshots might tempt more people into looking at it. However, is it even usable in the slightest, as you said you can't add levels?

I'll have a look see when i get home.

WERDNA(Posted 2008) [#12]
Oops. LOL.

I must have been really zonked when I wrote that post.

You CAN add levels.

You just can't add enemys or items yet.

Thanks for taking the time to download, and tell me what you think
after you check it out.

There is no limit to the size of the levels that you make, and there shouldn't be
very many collision problems but if there are please post.

Also you can take screenshots of your game by pressing the SpaceBar
which will be stored in there very own folder, and it would be really
cool if you posted some of your screenshots so I can see what kind of
levels your were able to make using this engine.

I'll see what I can do about the graphics, although be warned, that for
me these Are good graphics. My artistic talent sucks.

Oh, and one more thing.
More importantly than anything I've said so far, I fixed the WALNUT image.
There is now no white space around it. So may your eyes be healed Ked, by the blessed WALNUT.

AdBlock, again, comes to the rescue.
qft!

puki(Posted 2008) [#14]
Well, I certainly hope that under that blue dress thing I am wearing a brilliant white nappy.

Some things that are "puki"-related are:

"Winnie the Pooh" socks;
Nappies;
Jonhson's baby oil;
Sausages;
Slugs;
Squeaky bones - like the ones you give to a dog.

WERDNA(Posted 2008) [#15]
Its a night shirt. And before I turned this into a game engine, it was
a small platformer game named,
"Puki! And the quest for the golden sausage"

The story would go something along the lines of all of your sausages
were stolen by the evil WALNUT and you had to get them back.

And LOL thats a weird list of Puki related items.

Anyways.
I hope everyone is enjoying the game engine, and I happily await your
feedback.

P.U.K.I has already gotten 24 downloads which I am quite happy with:)
(Although the ever lovable Duncans Target Practice continues to top the charts, at a grand total of 40 downloads.)

And good luck to you Puki on whatever project your working on right now.

Yahfree(Posted 2008) [#16]
Good looking engine.

So when can we expect the wedding? And further more, the half-sausage-half-walnut baby?

WERDNA(Posted 2008) [#17]
Thanks, I'm glad you like it.

Lol!

What would a half sausage half walnut be called?

A walsage?

A Saunut?

The Mighty WERDNA(Lord Of Darkness)

Zmatrix(Posted 2008) [#18]
This is the kinda Game engine i expect from Werdna the Mad Overlord,

No doubt its just another tricky attempt to escape his dungeon prison,

And somehow it involves PUKI,,dangerous in itself.

to bad the wizardry series seems dead, i would have liked to have seen a bridge between the the old and new series , maybe we would have
gotten to see Werdna kick Phoonzang's(the dark Savant) ass.

ill shut up now...becuase my age is showing..lol

take it easy,

Sam

TaskMaster(Posted 2008) [#19]
Are allowed to use our own art or do we have to "borrow" it from other games?

WERDNA(Posted 2008) [#20]
You can use your own art. And by the way that you say 'borrow' I
sense a put down. Although I can't imagine why. All the artwork in the
game(if you want to call it that) is done by me.

And as to Zmatrix,

I am thouroughly impressed mortal that at least SOMEONE remembers
the Wizardry games. It is one of my all time favoriote series. And yeah,
it would have been nice to see WERDNA in some of the later games.

Although that is still a possibility. The game series I believe is still around.
If you look on Ebay, you will notice several 'Other' Wizardry games that
weren't part of the original eight part series. There is even a DS game!(japanese only of course, which, luckily, I can read)

Well anyways,

I hope that everyone is enjoying the Game Engine,
and I will come out with a much better version sometime in December
or January. For I will be quite busy until December 6th working on my
entry in the RetroRemakes Competion.

'May the gods of Wizardry smile upon you!'

'And may the WALNUTS smile upon you as well'

plash(Posted 2008) [#21]
Sigh.. another nut case in the field.

GfK(Posted 2008) [#22]
Stop posting stupid pictures all the time.

TaskMaster(Posted 2008) [#23]
Werdna, my comment was a joke because Puki is known for using the art from *ahem* other games. And since it is the PUKI game engine...

Just a joke, not a jab at you at all. :)

WERDNA(Posted 2008) [#24]
LOL, ok then. No offense taken.

And LOL to the Nut case joke also.

And as to Gfk....

Heres a picture just for him.

Mysterious isn't it?

What could this be?

Its obviously a hard core RPG game that simply shines with awesomeness,
but what game could this be from?

GfK(Posted 2008) [#25]
but what game could this be from?
Don't know or care. I'm blocking images from Photobucket, Imageshack, Flickr, and several others because I'm sick of looking at stupid pictures in programming forums.

plash(Posted 2008) [#26]
Seek help, 'WERDNA'.

WERDNA(Posted 2008) [#27]
LOL

GaryV(Posted 2008) [#28]
Can't tell if the above artwork was done with crayons or colored pencils?

GaryV(Posted 2008) [#29]
@GfK: I agree, I will add them to my hosts file

WERDNA(Posted 2008) [#30]
LOL.

The above artwork was done using paint shop pro 9.
As I have said before, my artistic talent is somewhat lacking.

And I have decided that P.U.K.I will no longer be a game engine.
It will be a game Editor!

The next version will be totally different. It will be a large window,
with all sorts of little buttons on the sides and will resemble your
basic painting program. But instead of different brushes, the buttons
will be for all kinds of different platforms, and enemys, and items that
you can add to your game. And then for moving platforms, you will
simply draw the path that you want them to move along using the
mouse.
Then there will be a button and the top that allows you to run your
game and see how it looks, another button for saving your platforming
level, and another for merging two saved levels, into a single game.

It will be very complex, and I quite look forward to making it!

Until then mortals,

The Mighty WERDNA(Lord Of Darkness)

Sauer(Posted 2008) [#31]
See now I'm confused.

I guess I'm not really sure exactly what a game engine was. I was under the impression that it is just a collection of code (usually with an IDE) that allows a user to overpass the under-workings in a game and skip directly to content/art etc.

So I guess my question is whats the difference between distributing code as a game frame, a game engine, and now this game editor? Or are they one in the same?

DavidSimon(Posted 2008) [#32]
Of all the nutjobs in all the insane asylums in all the touched by god mother fuckers to christen an engine after.

Now, if you'll excuse me, i'm off to work on my 2d vector engine. J.A.C.Kipper

No prositutes were harmed in the making of this post. several were aroused however.

JustLuke(Posted 2008) [#33]
Nice swearin', DavidSimon!

I like the cut of your gib, my good man, but despite personally believing that dropping f-bombs is not only a neat way to enhance any form communication but also a necessary one, I suspect that the moderators won't agree.

WERDNA(Posted 2008) [#34]
This was originally a game engine. simply a collection of easy to
understand code that let you get right to making your platforming
levels.

And more advanced users as you might say, could dig into the more
complex bits of code and modify the engine as they see fit.

The new version of P.U.K.I will not let you actually modify the code,
but will work more like the level editors found in several video games.
(I.E TimeSplitters, WarCraft, Quake)

It will allow someone with no programming experience whatsoever,
to create their very own platforming games.

I hope that clears things up for you Sauer.

And no swearing please David, I don't appreciate having my posts
locked do to content.(Although since this post is Puki related, I might
an exception. LOL)

GfK(Posted 2008) [#35]

My reach is far.

LOL

I cower before the might of Puki!
