Hi,

was playing around with particles... please try and let me know the FPS and your GFX card... many thanks

Might make this into the ultimate star field screen saver. In fact the star field is a bit clever can have as many stars as you like WITHOUT ANY slowdown!

[edit] Images removed during development...

*(Posted 2007) [#2]
I get 6fps on my laptop with S3 graphics :)

JazzieB(Posted 2007) [#3]
Very nice. 85 FPS - same as my monitor.

ImaginaryHuman(Posted 2007) [#4]
Is it a tunnel with texture mapping?

Boiled Sweets(Posted 2007) [#5]
@EdzUp, woah! Oh well sorry it's not so low spec cards I guess...

@JazzieB, ta - more coming, random planets etc etc

@AngelDaniel, yes a cylinder with 7 texture blends cleverly done to simulate depth

big10p(Posted 2007) [#6]

That's the bottleneck for lower spec cards, I'm guessing. Blending with so many layers is emulated on cards that don't support it, I believe = slow.

Screenies look nice, though. :)

Boiled Sweets(Posted 2007) [#7]
Well for once this is written for me and my spec.

Sorry.

Leto(Posted 2007) [#8]
Very cool effect, Boiled Sweets. Got constant 60fps at 1920x1200 (nVidia 7600GS).

Trixx(Posted 2007) [#9]
11 FPS on GF4 MX4000 128 MB, P4 2.4 1MB, 1GB RAM, WinXP ...

Nice effect !

puki(Posted 2007) [#10]
This looks exciting.

Myrmydon(Posted 2007) [#11]
19 fps on my radeon 9200 and pentium 4 processor 2.66GHz

Impressive

Foppy(Posted 2007) [#12]
43 fps on my Radeon 9600 256MB, p4 1.7GHz

On my screen there's a hiccup/break in the animation about every second, very nice effect though.

Starwar(Posted 2007) [#13]
Very nice! 20fps with GeForce 6200 and 1.5Ghz

dmaz(Posted 2007) [#14]
I repeat the "Very nice"!
1600x1200x32
60fps same as monitor)

one problem, maybe... one of the particles stopped when it hit the edge of the screen and just sat there... actually it slooowly moved off taking about 2 minutes to be completely off the screen.

Boiled Sweets(Posted 2007) [#15]
@everyone, thanks for the positive feedback. I'm tweaking it so it's not so gpu intensive and added nice active plasma and planets. Next version coming soon.

JoeRetro(Posted 2007) [#16]
60 fps 1280x1024x32 (Geforce GT6600)

Good stuff Boiled!

Boiled Sweets(Posted 2007) [#17]
Hey Joe,

did you do a space saver?

Danny(Posted 2007) [#18]
It's going too fast for me to be able to count the frames..
Oh wait, F10, right...

60Fps (same as monitor) @ 1440x900 on nvidia Go7600 in a DualCore T5500 (2x1.6Ghz). And it's using only like 20% of cpu time!..

Boiled Sweets(Posted 2007) [#19]
@everyone, would you like options to be able to configure this? For example, amount of stars, star speed etc?

Also how much would you pay for this (if at all)?

jfk EO-11110(Posted 2007) [#20]
I think most of us aren't people who buy screensavers. anyhow, normal PC users probably would pay a max of 5 or 10 dollars for a screensaver, if it's something extraordinary to them.

Personally I think you should rather try to sell your effects to movie makers. Remember not so long ago effects like these were sold for millions, eg. in the "Stargate" movie.

DarkMere(Posted 2007) [#21]
Looks really nice.

71 Fps 1280x1024x32, P4 3.0Ghz, 1Gb Ram, Nvidia 7600 GS (AGP)

b32(Posted 2007) [#22]
20fps
Looks cool

Grey Alien(Posted 2007) [#23]
looks cool, not tested it though...

xlsior(Posted 2007) [#24]
steady 37 FPS on Athlon 2800+ with Radeon 9600 Pro 128MB

Panno(Posted 2007) [#25]
16 fps on 6200 with sempron 2200 und 9c

Boiled Sweets(Posted 2007) [#26]
So now what?

IKG(Posted 2007) [#27]
75 FPS with an ATI PCI Express x800

This is pretty cool, Boiled Sweets. Nice job :)

_PJ_(Posted 2007) [#28]
12/13 FPS Normal
29/30 FPS Wireframe

ATI Radeon 9200
Semperon 2800+ (2.005GHz)

FPS fixed at 60

(My PC is fairly busy)

IPete2(Posted 2007) [#29]
Steady 85fps

3.20Ghz CPU
2GB RAM
Sapphire Radeon X800XL (with 256MB)

IPete2.

xmlspy(Posted 2007) [#30]
60 fps, really cool.

Boiled Sweets(Posted 2007) [#31]
This project is back on as I want to productise the various unfinished projects I have neglected whilst finishing other stuff.

Gonna add asteroids plus some configuration options then stick it on the old site and ask a few dollars for it.

FYI: Other projects soon to be completed...
1. Stopple (Bloxorz remake)
2. qoob

GfK(Posted 2007) [#32]
It explodes spectacularly here with a BSOD.

P3 1.1GHz, 512MB RAM, 16MB shared graphics, WinXP + SP2.

Boiled Sweets(Posted 2007) [#33]
@Gfk - REALLY?????

Mr. Sandman(Posted 2007) [#34]
85 fps on GeForce 7600GT

Boiled Sweets(Posted 2007) [#35]
Some updates coming...

1. The starburst is more organic now - changes over time

2. Asteroids!

3. UFOs

Anything else you would like to see?

MGE(Posted 2007) [#36]
5fps on one the most popular graphics card any typical end user would have on their machine. (Intel 82845G) However, it would probably run alot better at a lower resolution. 640x480, 800x600. Looks good though!

Raz(Posted 2007) [#37]
p4 2.4
9800 pro
1gb ram

60fps constant

very pretty :D

TomToad(Posted 2007) [#38]
I get 9fps on my GeForce fx5200.
But it is also running at 1440x900. Any way to decrease the resolution? I bet it would run much faster at a lower setting.

Boiled Sweets(Posted 2007) [#39]
Working on the config side of things - will be very flexible, please bear with me, I'll post a new version as soon as...

Boiled Sweets(Posted 2007) [#40]
Getting there - major tweaks - this runs like a nutter on my dev laptop!

New version coming soon!

_33(Posted 2007) [#41]
This looks much more interesting :P

MGE(Posted 2007) [#42]
Nice pic, what's this being coded in?

Boiled Sweets(Posted 2007) [#43]
Blitz3d

Boiled Sweets(Posted 2007) [#44]
OK go grab it here:

www.boiledsweets.com/Starburst

Whats New?
* Installer / uninstaller
* Is now a screen saver
* Added stars
* Added asteroids
* Added loads of configurable options
* Tweaked code - now runs faster!

MGE(Posted 2007) [#45]
Excellent job. Runs fine (20-30fps) on my low end spec dev machine in resolutions up to 1024x768. :)

AJirenius(Posted 2007) [#46]
Great job Boiled!

Suddenly I have switched screensaver ;)

Boiled Sweets(Posted 2007) [#47]
Already started on the next update...

Swirling galaxies
Space rockets
Different space boxes

Boiled Sweets(Posted 2007) [#48]
Here ya go...

Galaxies...

Rockets...

MGE(Posted 2007) [#49]
Careful ,don't lose the realisim of it, the rockets look very cartoony, generic. I would consider:

1) Comets
2) Shooting stars
3) Flaming meteors (space debris, etc..)

Lose the man made devices, but if you must, keep it to a few rockets, satallites, etc.

AND ofcourse the occasional and I mean hardly ever, UFO. :) :) :)

puki(Posted 2007) [#50]
I was almost overcome with the excitement of the screenshots. One could even be forgiven for not wanting to run it - in case one was hit in the face by a projectile.

Loktar(Posted 2007) [#51]
Nice job, looks like you used VB for the windows front end as I do. Settings are nicely laid out.

Boiled Sweets(Posted 2007) [#52]
@MGE

Comets = done :-)

A rocket will appear very, very occasionally.

JoeRetro(Posted 2007) [#53]
Nice stuff! Runs very well on my system.

smooooooth!

Boiled Sweets(Posted 2007) [#54]
Anything else I should add?

Currently has...

Star field, stars, galaxies, comets, rockets, asteroids.

MGE(Posted 2007) [#55]
Just my .02... (looking at the screen dumps..latest demo doesn't have the latest feaures shown.)

1) Flaming trails should be coming off of rocks, space debris, in the pic they look like normal particles with trails, the leading object should be easily identifiable (comet, rock, etc.) followed by the flaming trails. And perhaps just fire colors (red, yellow, etc) instead of the multi colored trail??

2) UFO's - seriously, this would be cool and entertaining, if done correctly. Just once in a while surprise the viewer with a ufo flying around. Doesn't even have to be in the same view as the 3d objects, just let it zoom around once in a while. The user would be like "what the..did you see that??"

3) Option for mouse interaction. (Would cause the ESC to exit) Mouse Y controls speed of flight, Mouse X controls spin. (left of middle spin faster left, right of middle spin faster right, middle area no spin)

4) Every 20-30 seconds or so, warp speed for a bit just to randomize the viewing experience.

5) Option to load custom images and view them in the screensaver. Users would love to see their own face, or their own space images/sprites in the screensaver.

6) IMHO, I think $9.95 would be a better price.

This is really a cool screensaver, good job!

Boiled Sweets(Posted 2007) [#56]
[edit]

@MGE,

many thanks or your input.

Just my .02... (looking at the screen dumps..latest demo doesn't have the latest feaures shown.)

No not yet implementing.Expect a new improved version soon!

And perhaps just fire colors (red, yellow, etc) instead of the multi colored trail??

Looking at various images of various comets they don't have a visible rock at the front. Also they seem to be different colours, blue etc. So I'll probably leave mine "as is"

2) UFO's - seriously, this would be cool and entertaining, if done correctly. Just once in a while surprise the viewer with a ufo flying around. Doesn't even have to be in the same view as the 3d objects, just let it zoom around once in a while. The user would be like "what the..did you see that??"

Coming in next update.

3) Option for mouse interaction. (Would cause the ESC to exit) Mouse Y controls speed of flight, Mouse X controls spin. (left of middle spin faster left, right of middle spin faster right, middle area no spin)

Will have a play with this....

I think you might be right :-)

Yo! Wazzup?(Posted 2007) [#57]
It took more than 2 minutes just to get the task manager up on my laptop - I just quit and turned off the power

Warpy(Posted 2007) [#58]
Those comets have inspired me to go and see if Voodoo Lights still exists.
