Heya, I've been putting together a terrain system with LoD and support for texturing individual grids/tiles on the terrain.

If you have a spare moment could you download http://www.freeworldonline.com/temp/ut.zip

Move into the middle of the terrain (where the poly count reaches near to 20,000), turn off text (hit space) and note your FPS and update time from the title bar.

Could you then post your FPS and update time along with system specs here.

My results:
FPS: 380
Update time: 0
Specs: P4 3.2GHz (dual), 1GB DDR RAM, GeForce 6800 8x AGP 128MB

Bouncer(Posted 2005) [#2]
FPS: about 170
Update time: 0

Specs: Fujitsu-Siemens Laptop, Intel Celeron 1.6Ghz, Ati radeon xpress 200, 512 ram, WinXP

EOF(Posted 2005) [#3]
FPS: 397
Update Time: 0

Direct3D settings set for balance between quality and performance.
FPS: 169
Polys: 19760
Update time: 0
Specs: P4 3.2GHz, 2GB DDR RAM, RADEON X300 series 64Meg

Tried again with Direct3D settings cranked for performance.

On this Gateway laptop I am using at the moment, I get around 94 or 95 FPS with 0 update time

Pentium M 1.70ghz, 512mb DDR2 ram, Intel 82852/82855 integrated graphics with 64mb shared memory

537 no text.
280 with the text.

360 No text
136 HighDetail with text

Intel P4 3ghz 700 mb ram. ASUS AX800 Series. XP sp2

(to know fps widout text I let engine run for a min then press space and have a quick look at fps. so I dont know if NoText is accurate.)

170fps on a 2.2Ghz FX5200 with 512mb RAM.

I have to say Dave the LOD pop is terrible :(. Dynamic meshes are OK for large scale stuff but for a terrain of this scale (considering the detail of the texture/heightmap) I think you should focus on a static mesh. Sorry.

I guess this is for the new Freeworld, which is by all accounts a great indi-game and well done for writing it and for doing this expirment in looking for ways to improve it :), but unless your going for the whole world in one zone I dont think this is the way to go about it.

It's clever, but LOD isn't really necessary any more for landscapes the size of Freeworlds. With todays relative GPU/CPU power i've find it's actually quicker on my machine not to tie the CPU down with LOD calculations and just render the lot.

if you are intending to do static worlds again then you might invest in modelled landscapes, you'll get sheer surfaces then (vertical walls) which is something you've tried to do quite a lot in the current Freeworld but just doesn't quite work with a heightmap.

PS: Made level 70 last night :)

680fps with 0 update. Amd 3200+ ati x800 pro. 1g ram.

The fps is also displayed in the title bar of the window.

FPS 145
Update time 0

where about 19K polys

Fps 391
update time 0

athlon 2800+, 6800 gt, 1 gig ram

I hope this gets made into something. I'd like to sneak around in those valleys.

326 FPS, or 520FPS without the text showing

327 with text. (did not move any keys..)
1488 No text enabled. (did not move keys)

150-180 FPS without text. Update time 0-1. But, it's quite uneven in actual frame rate, when moving around, causing jerky motion.

Thankyou all for the results!!!
