Hey everyone.. Working on some plantlife stuff and just need some speed tests..

http://www.kcstudios.net/Grasstest.zip

Hit the space bar to add grass groups (starts at 1,000 and maxes out at 50,000)

Move with arrows, and mouse.

Please let me know what your machine specs are (CPU speed and gfx card type).

How many groups you had, at what Grasstime and FPS.

Thanks a ton :-)

Edit: yeah, the texture is crap, just threw it together for testing purposes.

FBEpyon(Posted 2005) [#2]
Works great here I got 60fps with the max amount of grass you can have, but i was also running a Defrag so... it should of ran faster, lookin good :P

DH(Posted 2005) [#3]
What was the 'grass time'? it shows the grasstime near the fps in ms.

This shows me how much time the system is spending on the grass itself. I can dramatically speed this up using sin tables, but for now I just needed a general speed test.

thanks though :-)

Kev(Posted 2005) [#4]
Very nice Dark Half.

Here goes,

GrassTime = 11 ms
FPS = 31
Grass Groups = 50000

My Pc specs,
AMD Duron 1200
ATI Radeon 9550

kev

Alienforce(Posted 2005) [#5]
Grasstime: 2ms
FPS 60/62
Grass Groups: Max (50000)

Specs:
Dell M70
nVidia QuadroFX Go1400

/Alienforce

Shambler(Posted 2005) [#6]
Grasstime 5ms
FPS 66
Grass Groups Max(50000)

Athlon 2700+
Radeon9700Pro

Banshee(Posted 2005) [#7]
With full grass load:
Grasstime 9ms
FPS 30

AMD 2200+
512mb
GeForce 5200FX - non-Detonator drivers.

No background tasks. Not even a virus checker.

Stuart Morgan(Posted 2005) [#8]
Grasstime - 4ms
Fps - 68
Grass Groups - 50000

Sempron 2600
512MB Ram
Radeon 9800 Pro

big10p(Posted 2005) [#9]
Grasstime 12ms
FPS 30
grass groups 50000

1Ghz Athlon
GeForce 2 GTS 32meg

DH(Posted 2005) [#10]
Alright, thanks everyone!

I can see that the system will be worth making, but will have to be optimized a ton more :-)

This will be a free system (code archives) when it is complete ;-)

Thanks again!

Grey Alien(Posted 2005) [#11]
Grasstime 0ms
FPS 61 (must be vsync)

full load of grass (50000) gives 2ms and same FPS.

3.2GHz P4 (HT), 1GB RAM (dual channel), 9800XT

SSS(Posted 2005) [#12]
grasstime = 3 ms
FPS = 62 (vsync)

for a full load (dirty man asking me about my load).

anyway great work:D

big10p(Posted 2005) [#13]
Urg! My machine's showing it's age. :P

I'll be interested to see how much of a speedup those sin tables give you, Dark.

Mikele(Posted 2005) [#14]
Grasstime = 5ms
FPS = 66-71
Grass groups = 50000

Snarkbait(Posted 2005) [#15]
Grasstime = 2 to 3 ms
FPS = 76 - 90
Grass Groups = 50000

P4 3.2Ghz/1 Gb Ram/Radeon 9800xt pro 256Mb

DH(Posted 2005) [#16]
My mahine specs are the exact same as you Mikele, although I am getting 2 ms at max.. odd..

I'll be interested to see how much of a speedup those sin tables give you, Dark.

Well, seen as though I am doing roughly 50,000 x 4 (so about 200,000) sin calculations per frame, if I changed to a sin table it should improve greatly!

Big&(Posted 2005) [#17]
Grass Groups = 1000
Grass Time = 0ms
FPS = 76 (think its tied to the refresh rate)
Pollys = 4000

Grass Groups = 50000
Grass Time = 3ms
FPS = 76
Pollys = 23600

Specs in sig.

Bot Builder(Posted 2005) [#18]
Grass Groups = 50000
Grass Time = 3ms
FPS = 60

DH(Posted 2005) [#19]
Well, it doesn't seem that changing to a sin table is helping.. No signifigant improvment in performance over the 50,000 groups.

ozak(Posted 2005) [#20]
Solid FPS of 76 here on max (refresh locked?)
Grasst time 3 ms :)

P4 3 ghz with Radeon 9800 and 1 gig ram.

DH(Posted 2005) [#21]
yes, Refresh is locked at your default.

ErikT(Posted 2005) [#22]
60 fps with 1000 groups, sudden drop to 30 fps/grasstime 2 ms on 8000 and ends up on 15 fps/grasstime 4 ms with 50000.

Specs:
P4 2.0 ghz
ATI Mobility 7500 with 32 mb ram

big10p(Posted 2005) [#23]
Well, it doesn't seem that changing to a sin table is helping.. No signifigant improvment in performance over the 50,000 groups.
That's why I was interested. Using lookup tables with modern CPUs doesn't tend to buy you much, IMO.

Ross C(Posted 2005) [#24]
I would agree with big10p. The speed difference is not really calculate-able.

Dragon57(Posted 2005) [#25]
Grass Groups = 50000
Grass Time = 3ms
FPS = 142

Ran on the AMD machine in my sig.

tonyg(Posted 2005) [#26]
Grass Groups 50000
grass time 5ms
FPS 47
2700+, 9800Pro, 1G RAM, WINXP SP2 Home.

Grey Alien(Posted 2005) [#27]
big10p: yeah I made a sine wave plasma and thought I bet I can speed this up with a lookup table but it made about 5% difference!

big10p(Posted 2005) [#28]
Yeah, can be a bit disappointing when you think you've got a major optimization up you're sleeve, only to find out you don't. :P

Xzider(Posted 2005) [#29]
11 FPs
8GrassMS
50000 grass

Im on bad computer

PetBom(Posted 2005) [#30]
At 50000 Grass Groups

Grass Time: 5 ms
FPS: 13

[Compaq, P4 Mobile, 1.7 GHz, ATI Radeon 7500 Mobility, 512 Mb ram].
