Hi,

This is my new project, "Brium XG-72". It's a plateform/shooter game. We are in 20XX and you control Brium, a robot, into big levels. I can't tell more on the story and the gameplay, but it will play a little bit like "Turrican" on the Amiga. You'll shoot ennemies, gardians, collect power-up, life, jump on moving plateforms/invisible plateforms, etc, all that with a multi-directional ( ultra smoth ) scrolling. "DR-800", a female robot, will contact you by radio during the game to prevent you from danger. She's got a scaner and she's in orbit in the mother-ship. There will be digitalised voices in french, I don't know for english. I hope the game will be finished in 6 months !

I don't like the bright blue background - other than that is looks great.

Just have to say this: FEMALE robots are dumb. I've always thought the idea of male/female robots to be really stupid. In fact, is that HAIR I see on the female ROBOT??

That's just my opinion though.

There are no tiled graphics for the moment, the engine "just" shows the collisions ;)

Looks good so far. Let me tell you that I like your style. Do you know the "samurai jack" series?

Réno(Posted 2004) [#6]
No, what is it ? A manga, commic ?

it's a very special toon style. Your graphics remind me partially of it. The "samurai jack" toon series do live from the unique graphics and from the big effort for the soundtrack. you'll find pictures in the web, it's pretty popular. I guess it's made in america, but it's completely diffrent from the stuff I know from disney, wb or mgm etc. A samurai warrior is thrown into the future and has to find his way back to the past. Of course this isn't so easly, so there's a lot of series. They play it on the "cartoon network" channel here.

But don't let yourself influence too much by this stuff. I just wanted to say: the way you do the graphics may be very successful these days. So keep it up.

Well maybe one day you could switch to 3Dish 2D (not simple 3D!), using textured Quads to display the 2D graphics and alpha transparency and bigger graphics, so the pixels will completely disappear and you'd force true antialiasing. But this is kind of tricky (z-order fiddling), so dont worry or hurry too much. And of course don't hesitate to ask here.

BTW - it's unbelievable: most of the images that can be found in the web concerning "samurai jack" are absolutely not representative for the style I was talking about. The reason why is all these images are not screenies from series, but some edited title images or even worse: shots from a PS2 "samurai-jack" game, but it seems like this game has nothing to do with the original feeling at all. Anyway, here are some images that may be more representative concerning the unique style of Samurai jack (note: background works are also very important)

Surprisingly I couldn't find any tyical backgrounds other than the first link in this list. The Artists work with a lot of fine psychology, eg. these spiral shapes signal the presence of evil spirit, tho the average tv-consumer will not be fully aware of this, instead it will give him only a strange feeling of "something's wrong".

Thank you for the links. I didn't know it, it seems to be very artistic. I searched infos on french sites.

I am curious to look at "BlitzMax" for windows. Scaling and rotating are things that may interest me. It would be very interesting one day to make a shoot-them-up like "SOUKYU GURENTAI" : this game is amazing ( sega saturn ) !. Or make a "Big run/Outrunners"-like ! I'm less interested in transparency.

I made some code for z-order : one for drawing layer in order, and another to order drawing like games "Stree of rage" or "Zelda". I'll use it for Brium.
