Pop over to my website if you're curious.

GfK(Posted 2004) [#2]
Looking good. Wouldn't mind seeing a demo, actually.

QuickSilva(Posted 2004) [#3]
WOW! I`m really looking forward to this now, looks like great fun :) Have you decided whether you are going to release your 2D using 3D tools yet as I for one would glady pay money for them.

Jason.

Rob Farley(Posted 2004) [#4]
Looks crap, where are the 25,000 poly models? I mean what's a game without full stencil fx and shaders, we all know it's impossible to make a game in blitz at the moment without these... I really think you need to put more effort in, spend more time in off-topic complaining about the lack of features in blitz.

Quite frankly I think it's an embarrassment to blitz. In fact I'm surprised you've even got the gall to show it off.

Some people simply disgust me.

Koriolis(Posted 2004) [#5]
LOL.
Seriously, that's really some nicely polished piece of work. Really appealing.

EOF(Posted 2004) [#6]
Ace looking. Reminds of 'The Chicken Run' seeing all those hens boxed up 8-)
Have you decided whether you are going to release your 2D using 3D tools yet as I for one would glady pay money for them
I was inspired by a post Anthony put on Blitzcoder regarding the way he implemented his single-surface sprites into Cletus. I have written a tool to save packed images and am working on a single-surface version of SpriteControl. Thanks Anthony!

Mustang(Posted 2004) [#7]
Looks to good to be a computer game! :)

Grisu(Posted 2004) [#8]
Demo, Demo, Demo! :)

Red Ocktober(Posted 2004) [#9]
great looking screenshots... looks like a professional quality game to me...

GitTech(Posted 2004) [#10]
Holy Cow!!! Cool! :D

Binary_Moon(Posted 2004) [#11]
Sweet - Lets hope it plays as well as it looks :)

fredborg(Posted 2004) [#12]
I just played Platypus yesterday, and thought it looked ace. But it certainly pales in comparison to this!

If there ever was one, you would surely be the Claymation Gaming God! :)

Tri|Ga|De(Posted 2004) [#13]
Simply WOW!

Can't wait for a demo

ashmantle(Posted 2004) [#14]
Hehehe.. I had to laugh when I saw the expression the cow had in its face when it was lifted by the ufo.. top notch in gfx man! No we just need to try the gameplay bit ^^

CyBeRGoth(Posted 2004) [#15]
Looks more and more brilliant each time i see it
please tell me you are planning to get a full price commercial release for this baby, anything less is an insult to the years of work you have put in!

wedoe(Posted 2004) [#16]
You can hide a lot of sucky programming skills behind a great look, is that your twist ?

Seriously: Looks great !

ErikT(Posted 2004) [#17]
The early demo looked and felt very slick, and this looks slicker. I reckon I'll spend much playing time just chilling and looking at the scenery.

Warren(Posted 2004) [#18]
Selling software? I can hear the outrage swelling already...

Difference(Posted 2004) [#19]
The screens look great, but they would look even better if you gave them an unsharp mask filter, to make up for the downsizing.

robleong(Posted 2004) [#20]
Yummy. Slurp!

Orca(Posted 2004) [#21]
Best looking Blitz game IMO.

mearrin69(Posted 2004) [#22]
I can hardly wait! :) This really is looking top notch, Anthony.

BTW, can you make a Platypus patch to upgrade us to autofire? Pretty please ;)
M

IPete2(Posted 2004) [#23]
I'm with Mearrin69,

I can't wait to see this in action - it looks lovely. From the screen shots it looks like there are a couple of mini games too!

What a great mixture of style and imagination.

Is it set for a 2004 release?

IPete2.

Anthony Flack(Posted 2004) [#24]
It is set for a 2004 release, yup. And there will be lots of minigames :oD

mearrin69 - I'm not sure if I'm allowed to do that - BUT, the version Mike is selling at retro64.com has autofire and a bunch of other user-friendlinesses added (or is that what prompted you to ask?)

skn3(Posted 2004) [#25]
Wow looks impressive (again). The egg catcher minigame looks very well presented !

semar(Posted 2004) [#26]
Very nice and polished screenshot.

If the gameplay is promising as the images, then it will rock.

Some questions:
- do you use 3D or 2D ?
- the lighting is dynamic or static ?
- if dynamic, how do you achieve that nice light diffusion effect ?

Again, top stuff.

Sergio.

Anthony Flack(Posted 2004) [#27]
It's 2d sprites in 3d hardware. The lighting is static to save time; it's calculated when the level is loaded (with the exception of a few effects). The light diffusion is simply another semitransparent sprite (gotta love them transparencies).

(tu) ENAY(Posted 2004) [#28]
For GODS SAKE Anthony! Stop being so bloody good! :)

Réno(Posted 2004) [#29]
Good work for the graphics, waiting for testing the gameplay. I don't really like transparence or lighting effect ( sorry, I am an old real 2D lover :), so I'll wait to see this render in the futur demonstration.

One question, what will you propose for game timming ?

-=Darkheart=-(Posted 2004) [#30]
Keeps on loooking better and better I think you will have a lot of people queing up to buy this.

Darkheart

pantsonhead.com(Posted 2004) [#31]
Wow, I like it and I am very jealous.

Dr Derek Doctors(Posted 2004) [#32]
Good Gravy! It just keeps on looking nicer and nicer and nicer and nicer and nicer. Serious amount of variety in there as you've mentioned to me!

I've got my credit card at the ready for when it's released!

c5ven(Posted 2004) [#33]
very cool. couple questions tho:

- does Cletus have a "special move"?
- do the aliens pick-up Daisy Mae instead of a cow (bonus pts)?
- how does Cletus know grammar ("Cletus'" vice "Cletus's")?

:)

gameproducer(Posted 2004) [#34]
Hehee good job A'Flack. I really like this shot. See how aliens are beaming up cows :D

Anthony Flack(Posted 2004) [#35]
Heh, if you think that's funny you should see em get sucked in...

Réno:
Ah, you can never please everyone huh? After all there are some that will be put off it because it is a 2d sprite game! Personally I've been wanting to be able to do this kind of stuff with 2d sprites for 20 years so I'm loving it!
I'm not sure what you mean by your question, sorry.

Yes, it is of course the gameplay that counts in the end. All I can say is, I'm trying my best, and it seems to be coming along nicely so far.

csven:

Does Cletus have a special move... er, well, he can punch and do flying kicks. He can pick up and throw stuff. He can fire his shotgun if he has it, or a laser gun if he has that. Plus maybe another weapon or 2 before the game is finished. And he can throw dynamite if he has any of that. And he can do a bunch of other not-so-violent stuff. I don't know, what would you consider special?

No Daisy Mae I'm afraid. I have to have some limits if I'm going to finish this game before I die.

The grammar is a tricky one... well spotted. I just didn't like the way "Cletus's" looked. I know he shouldn't really know that!

No public demo until the game is finished, I'm afraid. Wouldn't want to spoil the surprise now... ;o)

GfK(Posted 2004) [#36]
This game has always reminded me of something... and until just now I couldn't figure out what... then it came to me.

Anyone remember Bubba N Stix?

ErikT(Posted 2004) [#37]
Will you include an er, 'idle' demo? Y'know, if the game's at the menu screen and you wait long enough, then a CPU-controlled Cletus will run around a level doing his thing while 'Game over' or whatever blinks in the middle of the screen. I like that kind of stuff.

c5ven(Posted 2004) [#38]
imho, Cletus needs a special move no one's seen.

i did an underground comic way back with a friend who had a Mr. Cream Jeans for a character - the "Automatic Milking Machine" was put to creative (if disgusting) use.

dunno. seems something with a farm tool/item would be a "must-have". how about these?

- Cletus Cow Patty Toss (with Olympic discus wind-up)
- Cletus Fertilizer Spreader (it burns!)
- Cletus 'baccy Ptooey (chewing tobacco spit is a WMD, y'know)
- Cletus Corn Cob Kernel Gun (doubles as a smoking pipe)
- Cletus Cockfighting Champion (need flute to control it tho)
- Cletus Flaming Flatulation Move - (need Zippo and a beans power-up)

maybe some farm folk can add to this list. :)

CyBeRGoth(Posted 2004) [#39]
Yeah I remember Bubba, had it on the Amiga and Megadrive, class game

It does remind me of it now!

Réno(Posted 2004) [#40]
...sorry Anthony, but I am a real 2D lover, and I hate 3D. 3D killed 2D with all this eye-candy "effects" like lightening, etc. Sorry, I like simple 2D like the NeoGeo can do, I like hand-drawed graphics. I saw somewhere in the net you was wainting for a long time to do "blurred" graphics... but I like pixels !!! I prefer game using mod-like game music insted of "simple" wave or MP3-like. That's just my vision of things :/

By the way, I like your graphics and your clay style. "Cleytus" looks good, but I can't say more, I didn't play it for the moment !

Game-timming for 60hz : here is what I am using for my next game.
Option00=0, set your directX to 60hz. The game buffer will flip with the monitor ( perfect )
Option00=1, slows the game by the time elapsed ( not good ) between too frames.
Option00=2, alternative method, it will "count" your refresh rate every seconds and make a "smoth" variable. The game could "fake" a 50hz or 60hz method, so the game could run a little bit slower depending of your monitor refresh rate ( good ).

Put this at the begining of the main loop :

NIPS00#=0.0;nombre d'image par seconde
NIPS01#=0.0;millisecs() du jeu
NIPS02#=0.0;millisecs() du jeu Tampon
NIPS03#=0.0;difference entre les deux tampons
NIPS04#=0.0;calcul du nombre de boucle par seconde approximatif
NIPS05#=0.0;calcul du nombre de boucle par seconde approximatif tampon

SpriteMove#=0.0

Option00%=0;select your game timming mode

Select Option00
	;*******************************************************************
	Case 0;60hz
	;mise a jour
	NIPS00=1.0
	;*******************************************************************
	Case 1;normal
	;calcul du nombre d'image par seconde
	NIPS01=MilliSecs();mise a jour
	NIPS03=(NIPS01-NIPS02);difference entre millisecs() Tampon et millisec()
	;mise a jour du tampon
	NIPS02=NIPS01;mise a jour millisecs() Tampon
	;mise a jour
	NIPS00=(NIPS03/(1000.0/60.0))
	If NIPS00<0.0 NIPS00=0.0
	If NIPS00>1.0 NIPS00=1.0
	;*******************************************************************
	Case 2;60hz alternatif
	;mise a jour
	NIPS01=MilliSecs()
	NIPS04=(NIPS04+1)
	;mise a jour toutes les secondes
	If NIPS01>=NIPS02
		NIPS05=NIPS04
		NIPS04=(-1.0)
		NIPS02=(MilliSecs()+1000.0)
		;mise a jour
		NIPS03=(60.0/NIPS05) Mod 0.25
		NIPS00=((60.0/NIPS05)-NIPS03)
		;mise a jour
		If NIPS00<0.0 NIPS00=0.0
		If NIPS00>1.0 NIPS00=0.0
	EndIf
End Select

;moving sprite 1 pixel per loop
SpriteMove=(SpriteMove+(1.0*NIPS00))

Anthony Flack(Posted 2004) [#41]
Csven, interesting, I had a friend who legally changed his name to Gene Kremer. Yes.

Cletus will spit baccy but only as an idle animation. I see what you're trying to do now, you're trying to give me so much extra stuff to add that I'll never finish! You evil person! Hmm, throwing cow poop could have possibilities though... AARGH! Damn you, it's working.

I shall look up bubba; never heard of it.

Réno - I understand... I love good pixel art too, although these days my own ideal is to make things look like "proper" claymation as much as possible so I'll take any tricks I can get... plus, without vertex colours and scaling/rotation my gfxmem requirements would go through the roof! Using scaling, rotation and transparency to me is also much more like the 2d work I am used to as an animator; using aftereffects etc. I reckon it was the polygon meshes that killed 2d - plus the rather faddy idea that every game now needs a 3d camera that can view the action from any angle.

But far better to be a hardcore pixel art fan than yet another "only 3d is acceptable" person as far as I'm concerned. But I think ironically, the novelty of 3d has worn off and nowadays 2d is the novelty. I think we may see a minor resurgence of 2d as developers try to make their games look different from everyone else's (finally!)

As for the timing, I am running internal logic every 3ms, and rendering a frame whenever I get a vblank. Works pretty well, but stutters occasionally; I think because vwait is too resource hungry. I'll look into making that side of things a little more intelligent later and see if I can't get it totally silky smooth.

Erik - I like em too... but I don't think I will include an idle demo this time around. However, I am definitely considering recording all the players moves and if they play a record breaking round on any given level, saving the replay for posterity. If I do have an idle demo, it will play back the player's own best performances.

eni(Posted 2004) [#42]
If I do have an idle demo, it will play back the player's own best performances.

Wow, Nice idea!

LineOf7s(Posted 2004) [#43]
Sweet sweet stuff. But you know that. And you love it, you praise-whore. Go on, admit it. :oD

As far as the grammar is concerned though, whilst if we were discussing the clay owned by Cletus it would in fact be "Cletus' Clay", I'm yet to see an apostrophe anywhere at all. I read it as Cletus Clay being the name of the main character (and I thought it was a particular good name for both him and the game, actually).

GfK(Posted 2004) [#44]
I shall look up bubba; never heard of it.
Its no bad thing. Was a great game, if a little short.

Ruz(Posted 2004) [#45]
very nice indeed , congrats on the polished product( mike drools with envy)

JAW(Posted 2004) [#46]
Looks great as always dude :) I love the clay technique and can't wait for a new demo.

As for the website, it looks good; but why not put Platypus and Cletus Clay on the same page instead of having to click Older Games? It just seems like an unecessary extra click (especially since Platypus is a very good game).

Gabriel(Posted 2004) [#47]
It looks amazing. In fact it doesn't look as though it's from a computer game at all. It looks like Claymation on TV or something.

There's not really much else for me to say because I made up my mind that I would buy it as soon as it was released as soon as I played that little demo you released ages ago. The screenshots just make me more impatient ;)

scribbla(Posted 2004) [#48]
yep i love the playdoe look....nice stuff

DarkNature(Posted 2004) [#49]
I remember being madly impressed with the last demo of this a bit ago but, man, it looks well cool now.

I'm pretty hooked on Platypus at the moment, though it always gets the better of me so I'm quite looking forward to getting me mits on this little fella.

Have fun.

Oddball(Posted 2004) [#50]
Will we ever see a Blitz version of Bert the Barbarian? I loved slicing those bad guys in two.

(tu) sinu(Posted 2004) [#51]
Not another 2d platform, scoring fest game.

Hang-on a sec, they are the best types, from nights to metal slug.

I really hope this game is as special as those games and has the replayability cos from your last effort(top class platyus) i played and from the screens i've seen this could be a very nice game to add to my collection not just based on graphics but also on gameplay and that "damn i need another go, just so i can score evewn a tiny amount more points than last time or lose less lives to complete it."

AF i hope it's one of those kind of games, cos they really are addictive and what games are all about to me.

ps tell me if it's not so i can be ready for it not being one of those games or dissapointment.
Hopefully the music also fits, it will really add to the experience.
Maybe someone can make a metal slug clone too in blitz, that game is truly amazing from versions 1-whatever i last played and has no 3d, though you'd need a triple a 2d artist :)

DarkNature(Posted 2004) [#52]
I think there should definately be a bonus level that features cow-tipping. People would like that (perhaps).

;)

Have fun.

(tu) sinu(Posted 2004) [#53]
whats cow tipping, hope it's not like the sheep thing the welsh do :)

c5ven(Posted 2004) [#54]
@LineOf7s - check the sign in the first screenshot. that's the grammar to which i was referring. Cletus couldn't get the "R" going in the right direction, but... ;)

Michael Reitzenstein(Posted 2004) [#55]
Not another 2d platform, scoring fest game.

That makes, what, three on the PC? :)

Paolo(Posted 2004) [#56]
Looking facinating!

It reminds me what I felt when I first saw the Donkey Kong games at the SNES :)

People (and me :) want to see this in motion, if you don't want to release a demo may be you could capture a small in-game video, this is what I do with my game.

See things moving gives a great idea of how the it feels playing... ;)

Later!
Paolo.

Seldon(Posted 2004) [#57]
@EpicBoy:
sorry for general (BlitzForum) and specific (this thread) OFF-TOPIC :-) , may you tell me which programming language you used for PocketPC (I guess Windows-CE based) ? Thanks.

IPete2(Posted 2004) [#58]
Anthony,

I have a very serioous proposal for you:

If you send me a run twice only demo of the game so far I can create a series of video clips for you (free of charge), with my awesome kit set up.

I have some really specialist kit that allows me to record stuff real time off PC - full screen onto DV.

I can then grab it into Premiere and edit it together and create MPEG clips for you to post on your web site.

This is a service I would normally offer out to clients, but as we're in this commuinty - this time I'll waive any fees.

If anyone else needs something similar I can establish a good rate for this service to the community.

Best regards,

IPete2.

Ash(Posted 2004) [#59]
Bleh. He just wants to play the game before all of us. :)

:p

LineOf7s(Posted 2004) [#60]
csven - <ding!> I'm with you now. :o)

Anthony Flack(Posted 2004) [#61]

Sweet sweet stuff. But you know that. And you love it, you praise-whore. Go on, admit it. :oD

Considering I only manage to release a game every year or 2, a little bit of friendly encouragement to motivate me along the way never hurts, it's true!

JAW - I'll be doing some minor restructuring on my site very soon, and Platypus will be given a more prominent position as you'll see.

DaveW - I hope so, one day. But I have a few other projects I want to do first.

IPete2 - you know, I do plan to make a demo movie sometime in the nearish future. I probably won't need your services as I have a background in videography myself, but thanks for the offer and I'll certainly keep you in mind if I have any trouble.

Bubba - okay, I have played it, yeah there are a few similarities! Although Cletus doesn't have a magic stick; just as well because that would be a bit much! Not a bad little game, I really like a lot of the stuff Core did back in those days.

Cow Tipping - I don't think so; Cletus loves his animals. Take that however you wish.

IPete2(Posted 2004) [#62]
Anthony,

Okay, just thought I would offer. I kinda guessed you have had some experience in order to come up with the innovative way to make games.

My hat goes off to you!

And please ignore the teasing about me wanting to play the game - you could have sent me a locked out, demo of things going on - I am just interested in seeing how it moves.

IPete2.

BlitzSupport(Posted 2004) [#63]
Anthony, that egg-catching thing looks like a complete game in itself (like one of those old Game & Watch things)! Any chance you could stop hogging all the talent?

Paolo(Posted 2004) [#64]
IPete2,
you don't actually need a "capturing studio" to make a few seconds video, just using

Fraps (www.fraps.com)

and

VirtualDub with DivX

with a little bit of imagination and that's all... why people should pay for that?

Paolo.

Panno(Posted 2004) [#65]
first Bart the Barbarian and now this ??!!!!

this looks really cool ! i love it .

please make a tut about playdoo modelling ;)

Captain Wicker (crazy hillbilly)(Posted 2012) [#66]
I just wonder when this will be finished, The videos of Cletus Clay on youtube are great! :)

www.youtube.com/watch?v=PwdYdWTDvg4

It must take a lot of hard work to make a Clay animated game :)

Amon(Posted 2012) [#67]
This has to beat cheify, for sure?

SystemError51(Posted 2012) [#68]
Did I just read that right? 8 year old thread resurrected? o_O

Nexus6(Posted 2012) [#69]
Ive been checking this thread everyday for the past 8 years, im so excited, i hope its nearly finished.

*(Posted 2012) [#70]
Another perfect example of why old threads should be locked :)
