In the 3D archives is a shadowmap function.
I cannot for the life of me get anything out of it
but a completely black map. I'm trying to use it
with primitives and I've set the entitypickmode
just like it says. Could somebody post a snippet
of example code where it actually works? Probably
take you two minutes...Thanks.

The sample Shadow which were included in your blitz will probably tell you what you want. It does only support shadowing onto flat shapes though, cuz it makes a cube to act as a shadow, and it actually looks exactly as a shadow.
That is for shadowing moving elements.

For shadowing levels, etc.., and make lights cast shadows which does not dynamically have to be updated, use a lightmapper (I have a little problem on that area myself) like Gile[s].
