The Demo of Tattoo 0.7, my WIP texturing tool is now available for download.

It has been completely re-worked internally and is ready for some testing if you have the time.

Screen Shot:

(Note: Tank Model shown created by Mustang)

Download 1.2 Meg

It now supports multiple surfaces/textures and has a new alpha blended airbrush painting mode.

Let me know how you get on..

Just downloaded. I am deadly busy with an other project because of a deadline, so I have to test it later. Congratulations anyway. It's looking very promising.

HNPhan(Posted 2003) [#3]
oh man, i always wanted a tool like this to draw quick sketch for my texture,
thanks alot man, im now using 3 of your programs for all of my project :D, keep it up!!!!

nadia(Posted 2003) [#4]
Very nice, a very usefull and well done tool!
Thanx very much!

IPete2(Posted 2003) [#5]
Thanks,

Looks great!

IPete2.

Tera! you've created a Deep_paint in Blitz! awesome work man.

Caff(Posted 2003) [#7]
Ooooh look forward to trying this out...

TeraBit(Posted 2003) [#8]
How are you guys finding using it?

As a note:

I'm not trying to completely match the likes of Deep Paint or Body Paint (Both of which are full AAA commercial products costing more than £600 ($999) each. They are more suited to the high end of the projection painting spectrum).

I think that it's possible to make a more focused product which caters more to the low -> Medium poly models used in games creation. Still very much a WIP...

Tom(Posted 2003) [#9]
Hi m8,

For some reason it runs dog slow, shows 0 fps ?

If I click on a gadget anywhere, there's a wopper delay before anything happens, any idea what's up?

Tom
AMD 2ghz, Win2k SP4, GF4 Ti4200 (latest detonators)

TeraBit(Posted 2003) [#10]
The latest detonators appear to be screwed! (Probably not letting you specify that you want to keep textures in Video Memory).
I just 'upgraded' and then BANG! 0 FPS!!!

I switched back to 44.03 and everything is running at 100-200 FPS again!

Damn Nvidia! Can't they keep their drivers running in a straight line for five minutes.

Tom(Posted 2003) [#11]
Yeah it's very annoying.

I haven't seen this slowdown elsewhere (BB or otherwise) since installing the new drivers, have you managed to pinpoint what's doing it?

Tom

Rob Pearmain(Posted 2003) [#12]
Excellent stuff, I presume you need to have the model properly UV mapped before using and it preservers the mapping?

TeraBit(Posted 2003) [#13]
Yeah you need to have a model with UVs set up either in your model making package or using a specialised tool like Unwrap3D. I could do UVs in the program, but would rather not have to mess with saving the models in their various formats!

@Tom - I can get the same effect (almost 0 FPS) from removing the +256 flags (Force to VRAM) on the textures. So my guess is that this behaviour is caused by a driver foul up which will not allow you to specify 'Hot' Textures. As this is essential to it functioning, I expect that it will have to wait it out. But I'll investigate a bit more and post my findings.

Algo(Posted 2003) [#14]
Excellent work Lee. I was going to make a program like this a while back, I was even going to call it Tattoo, weird eh?

Runs fine on my system, Athlon 2100+, Geforce4Ti, WinXP.

I really would like a more interactive method of zooming though, maybe using alt?

TeraBit(Posted 2003) [#15]
You can use A & Z to move in and out or Hold the left Shift Key.

Left Shift - Pan (Hold the left mouse button to change direction)
Left CTRL - Spin (Hold the left mouse button to change direction)

You can move around with the numeric keypad too.

Hmmm, I should have put in a readme with the keyboard options really...

Algo(Posted 2003) [#16]
Ah cheers, panning seems a little jerkier than spinning for some reason though.

Hey! This is good :)

2 requests I have:

1. I would like to use this to highlight and darken areas of the texture - I know this can be faked with the alpha settings but I would like "lighten" and "darken" options in there similar to paintshop pros. This feature would be corking for adding fine detail.

2. Not sure if this is possible with outside help but i'll ask anyways... I paint/draw with a pen - I can't draw with a mouse. Would it be possible to add pressure sensitivity for a pen?

I like this app a lot tho - nice one :)

John Blackledge(Posted 2003) [#18]
"im now using 3 of your programs"

3? Tatto, Decorator...., err...

(By the way Decorator is brilliant, thanks a lot!)
But what's the one I've missed?

HNPhan(Posted 2003) [#19]
3rd is the Data Packer

I had lighten and Darken in mind, as it is I have only implemented a small subset of the brushes I intend to have.

As for pen control and pressure sensitivity, I would like to but, although I have access to a tablet I'm not sure how I would go about it. Is there a Userlib for tablets anywhere? Is there a standard API or is it a support on the basis of individual manufacturers?

Ian Thompson(Posted 2003) [#21]
A small problem with the airbrush, there seems to be an alphablended white square around the actual brush no matter what your alpha setting.

Works great though appart from that.

Ian Thompson(Posted 2003) [#22]
Blah! Double post... :oP

TeraBit(Posted 2003) [#23]
Thanks Ian, I'll look into it.

Dave(Posted 2003) [#24]
excellent work lee! nice little tool, now get back to video coding lol

TeraBit(Posted 2003) [#25]
LOL!

poopla(Posted 2003) [#26]
the files seems to be corrupt.

TeraBit(Posted 2003) [#27]
Hmmm, I just downloaded it and it and it ran with no problems. Perhaps it's ISP related in some way.

Ian Thompson(Posted 2003) [#28]
Dev, I had to download without my usual download manager (Getright), as my first download was corrupt.

Wulde(Posted 2003) [#29]
Lee, have you any information on the Detonator Bug? I cannot switch back my drivers.

Cheers

Wulde

TeraBit(Posted 2003) [#30]
@Wulde - I thought it might be a reoccurance of the 2D & 3D bug that used to cause big slowdowns when you mixed 2D & 3D, but after remming out the 2D GUI and text, I still had the same results.

It appears that the new detonators will not allow you to force Textures to VRAM. This will make Tattoo incredibly slow, since there is a lot of texture thrashing going on. I will e-mail Nvidia about the problem, but they're not known for answering!
