Angry Tanks logo #1

Community Forums/Showcase/Angry Tanks logo #1

sswift(Posted 2003) [#1]
I decided to change the name of my tank game from "Tank Attack" to "Angry Tanks" because it's more fun, whimsical, and memorable.

I worked for four and a half hours on various faces to try and create a logo for Angry Tanks, and after many failed attempts I finally ended up with this:

However, though I was initially satisfied with this logo, I have drawn up a sketch of a logo which is more 3D, and more interesting looking, so I will work on that one next. The new design is similar in many ways to this one though.

I like that a lot.

wedoe(Posted 2003) [#3]
Looking good to me :)

sswift(Posted 2003) [#4]
This is not the new logo I mentioned, just a slight improvement on the above:

Mustang(Posted 2003) [#5]
I like it! Sort of "Socialist styler" thre, you know, men with hammers, sickles and tractors... :)

Great, really, bold colors and all. Also looks bit like Pharaoh to me... (the side things...).

sswift(Posted 2003) [#6]
It's a TANK. Those things on the sides are the tracks. :-)

While I of course will/would reserve judgement until seeing the new logo you are working on, I think this simple, bold, iconic look is better than something done more in 3D. Plus a simpler logo would look great on textures in your game. As I recall your tanks aren't textured so this wouldn't go there, but would look great on the arena floor or something.

I'd have to agree with Mustang that it looks like a pharoah. It doesn't read as a tank. Perhaps a front view might be better.

fredborg(Posted 2003) [#8]
I think it's a bit boring. Something a bit more silly would do well, along the lines of this:

CopperCircle(Posted 2003) [#9]
now thats a cool logo, do you wanna do one for my game? plz

Tri|Ga|De(Posted 2003) [#10]
I'll go for Fredborg's logo too!

sswift(Posted 2003) [#11]
"think this simple, bold, iconic look is better than something done more in 3D."

The 3d view I'm talking about would be very 2D, a front view really, with a little forced persepctive on the turret. So it would still remain very iconic.

Fredborg:
That's nice artwork, but I don't think it fits my game. The tank is too realistic looking, too shaded, too dirty. The tanks in my game are cartoon tanks, with flat shading, and the textures are all two color.

big10p(Posted 2003) [#12]
I think the face would like angrier if you bend the corners of the mouth down, as in --> :(

sswift(Posted 2003) [#13]
Here is a preliminary version of the new logo, which did indeed turn out to look a lot better. There's still a few bits which I want to improve, such as the shape of the turret, and I think there needs to be a little something around the text.

I think I'm going to angle the turret to the left by 22.5 degrees to make the composition more dynamic once I decide on how the end of it should be shaped.

sswift(Posted 2003) [#14]
And here's the latest one. I dunno if I should stop here or not. Hm...

simonh(Posted 2003) [#15]
Maybe a bit too busy, that last one. But overall I really like the logo and new name for your game.

sswift(Posted 2003) [#16]
Here's a couple other alternative logos I came up with:

simonh(Posted 2003) [#17]
Nah, needs to be more pink.

Anthony Flack(Posted 2003) [#18]
But apart from that, go with the last one.

The tank with more bits on it is better. Although it may be a little dark for some people and their clapped-out old monitors?

sswift(Posted 2003) [#19]
Okay I this is the version I think I'm gonna go with... though I might spice it up with some special effects somehow for the actual title screen.

sswift(Posted 2003) [#20]
"Although it may be a little dark for some people and their clapped-out old monitors?"

Perhaps, but I'm not gonna design my art around crappy monitors... Art will always look crappy on a crappy monitor, and it doesn't make sense to make it look crappy on the good ones too! :-)

Of course important stuff should never be dark, but I'm not gonna compromise the contrast in the logo so that people with dim monitors can see the darker bits of the tank. I might try to lighten it a little bit more overall, but not too much.

[edit]
Lightened.

Stars & background bar are too much... no need to be that American? :)

Less is more.

Zo Zo Zee Zar(Posted 2003) [#22]
I agree, I love the tank, bar and stars spoil it for me.

sswift(Posted 2003) [#23]
Oh for crying out loud... I wasn't even trying to flavor it as "American". I just associate stars in a circle with military vehicles. :-)

Btw, here is the latest revision:

Mustang(Posted 2003) [#24]
:)

skn3(Posted 2003) [#25]
heh

sswift(Posted 2003) [#26]
Olay so you like this one better then?

Maybe I will go with this one then. It is hard for me to tell if the one with the stars and stripe is too busy or not, but I think maybe this one reads better. In the other one your eye is immediately drawn to the word TANKS instead of reading angry first, and it does seem too busy otherwise.

sswift(Posted 2003) [#27]
You guys really have it out for America though don't you? I mean sheesh! Not since they put an American flag on the machine gun in Duke Nukem Forever have I heard such a racket made over something being too Americanized.

If it had been a British flag in DNF, you know nobody would have complained. So why is is so bad for Americans to put their flag on stuff once in a while?

Btw, why is it that so many countires take so little pride in their flag? Most flags are pretty damn boring, with just three stripes of color, and usually not even very nice colors.

Some of the nicer flags I can recall seeing include Britain's Flag, Canada's Flag, and Australia's flag.

BlitzSupport(Posted 2003) [#28]
Flags suck.

sswift(Posted 2003) [#29]
But if we didn't have flags, then how would we set our textures to have UV clamping, or specify that we want zipped files to include sibdirectories I ask you? HUH? HUH???

Yeah. That's what I thought you'd say.

Mustang(Posted 2003) [#30]
It's just the whole concept of flags and nationalism... flags WILL get attention, no matter what. And when ppl start talking about the flag it will be away from the game itself (which should be the main issue). These times when there is real annoyance towards US stuff (Iraq etc) it's just IMO best not to advertize it too much. "Angry tanks" with american flag? Hmm...

In my own FPS game I will use instead of the usual "half americanized" military mumbo-jambo sign language something different; red star or something. BTW, I am NOT in any way against americans... just my 2€ cents.

The reason I didn't like the stars on your logo was just that it was too crowded then, focus point of the logo was lost.

Zo Zo Zee Zar(Posted 2003) [#31]
Last one looks the best.
sorted.

LOL @ the yanks one too.

BlitzSupport(Posted 2003) [#32]

Fortunately for you, I love bad puns. The logos look great, BTW.

Anthony Flack(Posted 2003) [#33]
You actually LIKE the Australian flag? I guess you'd like the New Zealand flag too then (seeing as most people can't even tell 'em apart)

sswift(Posted 2003) [#34]
One more for good measure!

Adjusted brightness a little more, made "TANK" a little shorter.

Space_guy(Posted 2003) [#35]
hehe neat :)

big10p(Posted 2003) [#36]
I still think you need to change the mouth shape - it looks more like it's grinning than angry...

<ducks>
