AWESOME! Absolutely wonderful!

This weekend, I am going to scour Amazon for any book, no matter how old, on programming wargames. The books often have the source for an example game to learn from. I really want to learn how to write some wargames of my own.

GaryV(Posted 2014) [#6]
I am well-past 60 and dancing with 70. I am at the age where it is hard to learn new things. I have loved wargames since I was a kid, trying to figure out how to translate one into code is very daunting. I am only interested in 2D, as 3D makes my head hurt. But, Amazon often has out of print books, so perhaps I can find something older to work from. I am at the point now, that when it comes to learning something new coding-wise, I can only learn by dissecting example code and learning from the methods used and how things fit together. Even though I use BlitzPlus and BlitzMax, I have only ever used them for applications, never games. Other than a couple of simple games for my granddaughter, I haven't touched any game programming since the 70s.

Your work though is VERY inspiring, and extremely enjoyable for old farts like me. Truly awesome stuff you turn out.

Well, these retro type games are getting quite popular these days even with the youngsters, at least in the Dutch region. Soooo tempted to say with an icy robotic voice: "By your command" ;-)

Keep it up.

I would If starting to program a wargame would be battleships,

Aaah, Mainsworthy, you are after my own heart there. I wrote a battle ships game in ZX Spectrum basic some (gulp) 30 years ago, it had AI and all and only filled about 13 screens of a 14" telly at the time. My own coding mojo is MIA mostly these days, but hope you don't mind, I think this is your latest screen grab, very impressive edit , image deleted

I must have missed something. Why did all of the posts get removed?

Matty(Posted 2014) [#22]
Bizarre?

Chalky(Posted 2014) [#23]
The fact that Mainsworthy deleted the post explaining why he's deleted everything probably doesn't help - I can't remember exactly what he said but it was along the lines of "I've been offered a contract which requires me to remove all references to my game on the forum".

GaryV(Posted 2014) [#24]
Glad I got it before it died. RIP most awesomest game maker in the history of game making.

Hey Contract died so game lives :)

My employer, said game was too niche, and would be a bad sales prospect, but he showed me how to insert images

Who was John Galt?(Posted 2014) [#29]
Another home run from Mains! I missed this one first time around. Have you taken a look at Monkey? It allows you to run games in your internet browser and I think that would be great for this type of game.

Mainsworthy(Posted 2014) [#30]
Thanks John, I like the idea of Monkey, but Im happy for now , BlitzMax does all I need, but the future May bring me to Monkey.

GaryV(Posted 2014) [#31]
I like the new shot (other than the yellow text is completely unreadable on the white background), but I am sticking with 4.12.

Stay away from monkey, and the idea this being a browser based game is absurd. Internet connections should not be required to play simple games.

Mainsworthy(Posted 2014) [#32]
Thank GaryV! 412 has been updated to 414 and just has some minor updates like leaving a skull and crossbones when a unit is destroyed, its still included with v555 , 555 has a map 10 times the size and rotateing units , Rockets, the 555 was really made for large space maps like StarFleetBattles, the A.I. worked a lot better with more room, but I still like the single screen aswell in 412-414

GaryV(Posted 2014) [#33]
I am sticking with 4.12 because it is easier to download. After clicking through three pages on indiDB to get to the download, just to get a popup ad and wait message, I gave up.

Mainsworthy(Posted 2014) [#34]
the link on indieDB is a small link at the top of the add, I missed it many times, but no problem, Im glad you got 412

Maybe you should stop "bumping" the thread that way ... I do not worry if you "bump" every week or so - but each of your "downloadlink"-posts misses a list of changes or other interesting things.

As long as between your last and "upcoming" post no answer was done, there is no need to create a new post instead of editing the old one.

Like said: no problem if the last post was a week or longer - but this isnt the case here.

bye
Ron

Mainsworthy(Posted 2014) [#48]
Ok Derron

Its kind of a panic post trying to fix things, without any time to post an update, I am so sorry please forgive a poor programmer? your right I can edit a post . Ive finished now , its working :)! Im giving it away cant do more than that to say sorry Derron, I hope you give it a try and see what my worn down fingers have done?

Derron(Posted 2014) [#49]
I know that sometimes you will have releases containing bugs you want to squash as soon as possible: but you better release things "later" - check them first a couple of times.
If you do not release things in the sense of "releases":

name your file "MyGame.latest.zip" and just replace it if you change things. The binary should state the used version/revision/build-time so people could write which version they used when the whole thing blew up :p.

@testing
I am on linux.

But: it seems your downloads contain multiple versions, and various "this is a new feature.txt"-files. Maybe limit to "Readme.txt" and "Changes.txt" - so your directory structure gets a bit more clean.

bye
Ron

Mainsworthy(Posted 2014) [#50]
I wish I was that organised Derron :) I will try, its realy good advice thanks

zoqfotpik(Posted 2014) [#51]
You know, you just went to a non-trivial amount of effort. That sort of thing is not easy to make. You should really consider putting some more effort into art, maybe find an artist who wants to work with you, and try to come up with something you could release commercially.

Mainsworthy(Posted 2014) [#52]
Thanks zoqfotpik, It means a lot for someone to say that. Im glad you noticed the hard work. But I like the result.

zoqfotpik(Posted 2014) [#53]
I'm just thinking of games like, I think, Hearts of Iron. The core there isn't all that different from what you have here-- it's just that there is more of it and a glitzy shell over the top.

Just pointing out that people make lots of money on things like this. Absurd amounts if you consider Steel Panthers style games. War gaming is a niche but the grognards will pay for a good game and they don't demand AAA graphics.

How much farther, really, is Steel Pathers from what you have here, from a core engine standpoint? The guys who did that made millions of dollars.

SP had a number of subsystems you probably don't have here, like location based damage, line of sight, elevation and hull down, but they are all pretty simple.

As long as between your last and "upcoming" post no answer was done, there is no need to create a new post instead of editing the old one

That might be but you have to ask yourself if he's really hurting anyone. There are what, about nine of us here these days?

Mainsworthy I urge you to consider pushing this and releasing on IOS or Android.

Mainsworthy(Posted 2014) [#54]
zoqfotpik thanks so much for the help! is there a way for BlitzMax to compile for iOS and Android? Ive got MacOSX and windows, and I ca do a Linux if I install the right libs for it, but I never thought of doing anything else.

zoqfotpik(Posted 2014) [#55]
Brucey is setting up an Android compile target. Otherwise you could look into Monkey which is very similar to Blitzmax and compiles to numerous targets including IOS and Android.

It's possible to get revenue-sharing arrangements with artists and sound guys. If you get this looking good enough you could very likely release on PC and Mac. You could pick some obscure part of history like the Crimean War and try to model that. Again you would have to have art but I bet you could sell it.

This is what Steel Panthers graphics look like. This is what wargamers consider serviceable graphics and as you can see they're almost in the same ballpark as your first picture. I even wonder if the Steel Panthers games had art done by the programmers. Consider that this was a title from a well-loved franchise that had heavy availability in stores and a fairly large budget (I'm assuming.)

Mainsworthy(Posted 2014) [#56]
thanks zoqfotpik, I will look into cross compiling now, I can feel a whole can of worms :)

excuse me because Ive never looked at this before, so I need a Brucey Mod(I never installed a mod) and then just compile to android target? or is it more complex than that?

I don't want to be a bother, so just give me a pointer, and I will follow it?

your realy helpful thanks

zoqfotpik(Posted 2014) [#57]
Look into Brucey's comment history. I don't think his target is quite ready yet but he has things compiling on Android so that can't be bad.

Mods are really easy to install.

Mainsworthy(Posted 2014) [#58]
Ok, I really like blitzmax and to have a new target , is really really great news. thanks zoqfotpik.
