BlitzSupport(Posted 2013) [#3]
Love the lighting and colours in this!

Richard Betson(Posted 2013) [#4]
Hi James,

Thanks.

The lighting and shadows are just layered blended images but comes out nice I think. The planet background is done with Planet Creator which for my game is a god send. :) I'm close to getting the core finished and adding weapons effects which should make for lots more color in the game. :)

Thanks for the typo report Cruis.In.

great it is! move over subspace and continuum lingerers....

Hi,

This video shows the new features of the game engine such as lighting, shadows and two levels of map play. I am just about finished developing the Phoenix game engine and I will now be server testing with the beta team. The next video will show actual space combat. Yay. :D

This reminds me a lot of the Silent Death online game that was around years ago on the internet and I really enjoyed until AOL bought it out and would not let anyone not connected via AOL play.

I found the website confusing however, and couldn't find where to download... Which felt very much like what happened to Silent Death Online too! :D

Nostalgia win.

Cruis.In(Posted 2013) [#11]
uh, it isn't finished yet.

Richard Betson(Posted 2013) [#12]
^Yup,

Still in 'closed' beta development at the moment. This is mainly to avoid hackers seeing what I'm up to. I'm about 4-6 months away from open beta testing.

We are currently working on the server which is working but still needs some tweaking.

Cruis.In(Posted 2013) [#13]
wow 4-6 months, network code? darn....

Richard Betson(Posted 2013) [#14]
Hi,

There is a lot to setting up a server and client. I've decided I want a 'headless' version of the server in Linux which means porting really the entire game engine to Linux from Windows. I've already got it going and it is not to difficult to port, well aside from the Linux foibles.

Add to this streaming encryption, obfuscation's and balancing the client side prediction model against the real world there is a lot to gel together. :)

Hi,

I have upgraded the Phoenix USC website integrating it with MyBB (message board system) which works really well. I also have a new logo. :)

Hi,

Phoenix USC: Bot war
Testing out bot stuff, ships and weapon's. My own little war of 100 bots.

Cruis.In(Posted 2013) [#21]
Looking good. Can't wait. Will there be an editor like in subspace to create your own zones?

I'd love to create some sort of capital ships in the mix.

Richard Betson(Posted 2013) [#22]
Thanks. I do have a map/world editor working and am limping it along as I go, but it is developed well enough so I can make the maps seen in the above video.;)

You will be able to use the map editor to make map parts with collision and edit ships, weapons and more. Here is a link showing what the map editor looks like.

Hi,

I am working on some concepts for the design of ships used in Phoenix USC. The following images are early concepts for ships in the game and will change over time but are looking pretty good so far. The names are internal development names for the ships.

Moved to here: http://www.phoenixusc.com/board/showthread.php?tid=160

More soon. :)

Hi,

It's looking good for Both a Linux and Windows preview demo of Phoenix USC next month (toward the end of the month). The demo will let you test drive the game engine and battle it out with 100 bots.

The demo will also feature an in game global IRC chat based in my custom window based GUI. It will let you chat with other demo users worldwide and also lets you chat in any channel you like. Should be a lot of fun. ;)

Hi,

I thought I would post a few images of my progress of late.

Current image of the game.
All the ships are rendered in blender and I animate the yaw so they look pretty realistic in game.

Custom GUI
I coded this GUI system myself in Blitz Max and it works very well and is super fast. I will be porting this to Monkey as soon I can.

Map Editor
This WYSIWYG editor is moving right along.

Rock on,

Richard Betson(Posted 2014) [#31]

Hi,

Extra juicy video. :)

Looking at starting a Monkey port of this as on SlideDB.com we are currently 8th in the rankings.

Rock on,

Hi,

Still hard at work developing PUSC. I have setup a server listing system for PUSC on my site and you see it in action here:

Main Board Index
http://www.phoenixusc.com/board/index.php

Server info page
http://www.phoenixusc.com/board/serversboard.php?action=more_information&sid=5

I am using sort of a minecraft JSON query protocol which works over TCP and is supported by the PUSC server which means the server can report it's status to a website or to the PUSC client launch application similar to how SS's works.

The server listing on the site gets an update from the PUSC server every five minutes and reports who's playing, number of playes, the current map and more. You can even launch/run the PUSC client right from the website.

I have redesigned the server to be completely authoritative now correcting a clients state such as position and velocity. It seems to work well and allows the server to correct a client when it is out of position or is cheating. The system should 'nip cheating in the bud' as the only data the client sends to the server is moves and options data, no position or velocity data is sent.

So I am just about to test the new server and if that goes well it will not be to long before I can move onto other areas and bring PUSC to open beta.

Checkout the server listing. [:)]

Hi,

I have setup a Twitch feed page for PUSC located here (also available in Webpage menu 'Gallery'). I will be for now using this page for those who want to follow Phoenix USC development as I will be posting times you can view our progress. As we get closer to locking down the server/client networking code I will begin to stream the results of our progress. The page also include a chat feature for Twitch account holders and we will be available in-game to take request/comments via IRC. Phoenix USC supports a windowed (custom built GUI) IRC chat feature which makes it possible.

I will try to include in news post the times we will be doing all this and post it here in our little forum. Times will also be posted on our forums announcements page.

I hope to hear from you when we get started. It will fun. :)

BlitzMax isn't dead and I hope this game written in native code proves it. ;) Working very hard to get this ready.
