Hey guys VOD is intended to be a sandbox/adventure game heavily inspired by Starflight 1/2

I started learning blitzmax many years ago and for one commitment or another did not continue. I recently started back learning late last year and decided to have another go at creating my idea for this type of game.

I do not have a suitable public build, but here are some videos I have uploaded.

When I do have a suitable public build, depending on if anyone is interested I will post it here. Also please see my topic in general discussion, I need some help crafting this into a game people will actually want to play.

Right now in VOD you can

Blow stuff up
Upgrade your ship
Explore an entire sector
Scan planets
Scan anomalies
Communicate with alien races
Dock
Buy Different Ships
Probably some stuff I forget

Some Stuff you will have access to in the game, through exploration but which of course can be done in a test build.

Cloaking
Jump Engine - because the sector is so big, flying everywhere would be excruciating so my idea of fast travel is a jump drive which you can acquire.
Pulse Shield - this destroys all incoming projectiles from enemy ships
Phalanx Point Defense: this shoots down all incoming projectiles within a certain range
Phase Modulator: When turned on enemy fire will pass through your ship.
Tractor Beam: what does this do? hehe
Nanite Device: Uses nanites to repair your armor
Ablative Matrix: Gives your armor and your hull a mitigation factor for incoming damage

All of those use energy, some use so much that your capacitor will be seen to be draining, some don't use enough to cause a drain more than your recharge rate, so there are some you can use more than one of, but some which you cannot use for very long such as the phase modulator.

Planets have interesting i information about them. Anomalies are dangerous, some are like wormholes where you can enter/exit a fixed point. Others are unpredictable, you could enter/exit a fixed point, be thrown randomly out somewhere unknown, or be seriously damaged + more.

I am trying to give you an idea of what is in so far, you can do so much, but I need to be able to use some of these features to make the game want to be played.

Like why should you explore? What is the benefit?

If you are familiar with starflight 1 or 2, you will know if gave you the feeling of small ship big universe, which is what I want to capture here, you are in charge of a starship/crew and can go anywhere etc. But I need some fun reasons for someone to click that .exe and decide to play.

There is a crew system, your crew will die if they do not eat. They get hungry and tired, and you can even monitor where they are on your ship, like the gym or the mess hall or the bridge, when they get hungry, they go and eat, when tired they go to barracks/crew quarters, and you can monitor your crew from a manifest and see all this info on them, health, hunger, fatigue, location etc...

You can even deploy mining drones to planets, and return and collect them when they are full. You can mine asteroids, or planets for precious ore to sell for interstellar credits to buy stuff to upgrade your ship.

Giving you more ideas of what is there, but I need ideas or help how to make them more compelling, or turn them into fun activities etc...

Since I will post a public build, this can stay here for reading for then but in the mean time perhaps people could reply to general or to here with the help.

Here is the first combat test video I recorded when I started working on combat.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yHfqLR7jtyc&feature=youtu.be

watch in HD/full screen.

2nd video, recorded soon after the first.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aE-0vcqLmNc&feature=youtu.be

3rd video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=AWxtNOwMS78

I've stopped working on the combat since this last video, because I find this easy to balance, work on etc, far more easy than weaving all of this into something people might want to play.

So far this has been programmed with the aid of IFSOGUI and TimeLineFx, thanks Marcus and Pete.

Also this isn't some complete game and this isn't my thank you post, but I want to thank people on blitz for helping me with questions on the forum. Also a special thanks to Jesse and GNS :)

thanks for reading!

I loved the Starflight games. Sounds like an ambitious product and fun. I would definitely be interested in seeing or hearing more.

Update in RP!

Hey guys I know I haven't showed much since the melee video, so hopefully this might interest you a little more as I gear up towards a public release in the not too distant future. I want a big factor of VOD to be exploration, just like as it played a key role in Starflight, and driven by information you get from interacting with aliens.

Thought I'd give a little RP update

Captains Log...

We are about to leave the immediate quadrant to explore a strange anomaly many parsecs from here, we learned of this anomaly from our discussions with the Eurians. We've stocked up on some fuel, armaments (just in case) and supplies to last us a week, the crew is ready and anxious to see what's out there.

Navigator enter coordinates 4900000 * 4900700 into the nav computer.

Navigator: Ready Sir

JUMP!

Navigator: Jump completed sir

Give me a tactical view

The anomaly is directly ahead come about.

Give me a scan what is that thing?

Navigator: It is a stable wormhole, Sir, I do not recommend we enter the event horizon. There is no way to ascertain where it leads.

No sense being adventurers and not exploring...
Take us in!

The end

Well...think it might be fun to find out where it leads and what happened? Or can happen! Then maybe you might like Void of Darkness!
Thanks for reading!

Starflight was an amazingly ambitious game for it's time. Even today its the closet thing to a simulated galaxy to exist within a digital frontier. If you dream of controlling a star ship like Kirk or Picard then this is a must have.

This is on my top ten list of games to keep an eye on.

Cruis.In(Posted 2013) [#23]
hi great thanks!

Latest video: http://www.indiedb.com/games/void-of-darkness/videos/station-assault

I know starflight didn't have a lot of this stuff in it, but the good thing is, there's nothing mandatory in VOD. I am making it so you can do whatever you wish, against the backdrop of a story, delivered similarly to how starflight delivered theirs, interaction with aliens, investigating stuff and exploration.

A star base assault is simply something you would never have to do, but after you get held for ransom by pirates in the game (think back how you felt about spemin unfairing you) you just might want to seek out their bases one day when you are strong enough and destroy them. :)

Oh and I am launching an indieGOGO campaign on June 26th to fund the art content for the game!

Thanks.

Banshee(Posted 2013) [#24]
This reminds me a lot of the Silent Death online game that was around years ago on the internet and I really enjoyed until AOL bought it out and would not let anyone not connected via AOL play.

I found the website confusing however, and couldn't find where to download... Which felt very much like what happened to Silent Death Online too! :D

Nostalgia win.

Banshee(Posted 2013) [#25]
Actually I wrote this in the wrong thread! But it does look kinda cool :)

Sorry about the mixup.

I'd offer to help but it looks like you have all the art assets taken care of. I can do awesome things with mudbox and photoshop. Anyways you can count on my donation! If this project ends up being at least 1/10th as great as Starflight then it will be worth every penny.

Cruis.In(Posted 2013) [#30]
Wow, thanks Nostalgic, I think you are the first backer, BEFORE the campaign has gone live!

And your faith, that even if it is 1/10th as good, is truly a very nice thing to say!

I sincerely hope to have all the best elements here that were in starflight and I kept them specifically in mind while developing to this point.

That being, exploration, a true feel that if you went around that corner you never knew what to expect, death...life...a new friend...a hostile alien...a cool new artifact or technology for your ship.

Interesting and diverse alien cultures to communicate with, modeled directly after starflight

Trade: The haggle/barter system similar to Starflight is here.

Lastly: I think I've improved on one area starflight did well enough for its time, I've just made it slightly more contemporary. Combat. Anytime, anywhere, no instanced encounters, with powerful special weapons, should be a fun time. Once you've upgraded your ship.

Compelling, but non linear storyline. (Hopefully the critics think so)

I would really rathered have had an artist partner with me and release the game. But I've found the next best thing, a guy I can trust who has thrown his weight and confidence behind me who is very talented. And if successful we'll complete this game, if not, by golly I'll still keep trying, but it might just take a bit longer than if I manage to achieve the funding goal.

You can help me in spreading the word to other friends who you are know might have liked starflight, or who might like a 2d sandbox space rpg with a non-linear story line, or space games in general, via your social media or forums you are a member of.

Since you have said you are quite a good artist, I might just commission you to do a ship or two if you would like that, if the funding is successful. I would love to see what you could design for sure!
