All,

I need a low budget (possibly free) software for WinXP, which should be easy to use, reliable, and that allows me to:

- import HD video like MPEG4
- video editing (trim, title, effects, etc.)
- dvd authoring (dvd menu and dvd burning)

Until now I've used Ulead VideoStudio, now I'm looking for something else and - as said - possibly free :-)

Regards,
Sergio.

The 'editing with effects' will be more difficult to find in freeware products, so you might want to consider using more than one solution if you really have to go the free way.

For US$100 you can get TMPGEnc Authoring Works 4, which is a very reliable package, with all that you mentioned. Check its features, it's awesome.

I also route you to the Authoring Tools section of VideoHelp.com which has all you need: http://www.videohelp.com/tools/sections/authoring-dvd?orderby=Type
If you do find something you like, please report back so people who read this thread can get a quick-start :)

This turned open-source recently, though I've never tried it...

AviDemux and VirtualDub are free editors, easy-ish (but not particularly friendly, GUI-wise), and can be found here:

You'd need a separate DVD authoring tool for both as far as I can tell, but there are free DVD tools out there, eg.

Vegas Movie Studio is as good as budget video editing gets. Awesome software for less than $95.
