if you want to run from CD ala boot from the CD etc I suggest looking into a minimal linux distro and BlitzMax

1) Is this viable, (ie lack of drivers what not)
2) Would you get any benefits from it
3) Would YOU let anything start from boot nowadays? (Ie lack of Start up App)

-it is extremely viable. You can quite literally set a linux installation up how you like (aka loading your program seamlessly without a login) and burn it to a bootable image.
-depends what it is
-yes if i knew what it was

You should however choose one of the better more established distros as your base like ubuntu/xubuntu or debian as these will probably have better hardware support (and a CD can be quite a big place for linux when you remove all the unwanted stuff)
