Is there any comperable freeware applications that mimick the functionality of Maple or Mathematica?

I sincerely doubt it. Since these programs are extremely powerful and have been worked on for over 15 years, A freebie would be hard put to come anywhere near.

There is some remarkably powerful freeware. But it tends to be just as complicated as the commercial stuff and with an awkward command line interface.

What are you trying to do? I'm guessing you need about a thousandth of the functionality of Mathematica.

Maxima is the only one I know of. No doubt it will lack alot of Maple's functionality, but I think it's worth a try.

Maybe a little late, but SAGE is also quite an awesome piece of software.
