Pirate Theme - where is this from?

Hello all, I had this pirate song theme in my head but didn't know the name of the music or where it came from.

I mocked up the bit I remembered from it: http://rafael_navega.webs.com/Pirate_unknown.mp3

If anybody knows the name of this song so I can research on it further, I'd really appreciate it.

It's "Barnacle Bill" (using variations of "Barnacle Bill the Sailor" possibly composed by some very drunk sailors if you have ever heard the lyrics) by Ashworth Hope (1880–1962). It was the signature tune of Blue Peter from 1958 to 2008 and was used in the ZX Spectrum game Booty.

Don't they also use this tune for Spongebob?

Hah, incredible. Dawlane, thank you very much!

I think it's "Blow the Man Down" that's used.

ZX Spectrum game Booty

This was a fun game, shame it had awful collision detection, and was really difficult for me!

In case anyone stumbles on this thread through google or in-forum search (and with this 2-year resurrection ofc...), the theme I was asking about isn't really from Barnacle Bill but actually from The Sailor's Hornpipe song.

Check it out: http://abcnotation.com/tunePage?a=trillian.mit.edu/~jc/music/abc/mirror/code.google.com/Sailors_Hornpipe_The_1/0000

This song is originally from a solo dance that sailors performed.

It sounds a little more catchy when played by an accordion: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_nRmOfnKw6s

Everytime I hear, I remember of the old Popeye cartoons :)

It's all lies. It was originally from here (with original lyrics).

That tune always reminds me of the old childrens Blue Peter series from when I was a kid.

Very keen! Blue Peter's theme's composer actually 'borrowed' some phrases from this folksong to use.

PS: I was originally intrigued by this folksong after watching Futurama's episode "The Problem with the Popplers": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=291axBL4l_w
