Device for viewing movies and images?

I'm looking for a device to view movies and images. The iPad is one choice, but it's not going to be out for a while, and it is pretty expensive for what it does. I'm also considering this tablet/laptop:

I don't see any difference between a tablet that just came out, and one that is several years old, as long as it can play a video file, so I don't need the "best".

Any other recommendations?

Don't buy it from there, Best Buy has it for $450

If it doesn't need to be a tablet, I recommend Eee PC 1005PE. A Pineview Atom and great battery life. Don't know about tablets, though.

I'd note that devices with older Atom N270/N280 + Intel graphics don't play (high bitrate) HD video very well.

How do you pronounce "tablet"? like in the word "table" or when you say "TAB" (the keyboard key).

Buy a laptop with NVIDIA vdpau support and install Arch Linux. That way video is being decoded with gpu support so you will have flawless framerate. A laptop like this shouldn't cost much.

My only concern with the Lenovo is that the graphics card is not going to do much 3D. The Lenovo will do movies and images no problem.

If you are going to do 1080p video then you need something with an Nvidia Ion. This is my Nettop that does have the Ion and I'm running 1080p.

You can get a western digital media player for under $100, will even play HD mkv files.

Exactly what sort of size are you wanting to view images/video at?

If you want something portable there are plenty of handheld .AVI/MP4/Media players/Image viewers available. Consoles too, like PSP, GP2X and Wiz (to name just a few).

Portable DVD player?

I got an asus 1201N netbook, which has nvidia's ion chipset, built-in HDMI & VGA, and a dual core processor. It's fast enough to decode HD video, and a pretty nice unit overall.

Biggest downside of any of the netbook/tablet solutions is that they typically lack an internal optical drive, so if you wish to play DVD's you either need to rip them to disk first or get an external USB DVD drive.
(Around $50 or so for a slimline, buspowered drive)

my acer aspire + ubuntuEEE can run almost everything (Avi, qt, mp4, divx, dvd/vob, etc). Only cost 200 odd quid.

@xlsior why do you need a dvd drive or rip dvds to watch dvds? just copy them as-is to the hdd & the media player should mount the folder.

PS: Ipad looks like an awful choice.

Thank you for the enlightenment Xlsior, and sorry for the off-topic.
