Justhost.com, too good to be true?

Community Forums/General Help/Justhost.com, too good to be true?

Sauer(Posted 2009) [#1]
I'm looking for a professional web host to move my websites to... I was looking at JustHost.com, and they have a lot of enticing offers. It almost seems too good to be true, anyone know anything about them, good or bad?

JustHost.com

Thanks,

The bandwidth is probably heavily throttled. Its unlimited. but at 15k/sec.
Your site is probably sitting on the same machine with 500 other sites as well.

If you use it, let us know how well it works.

Sauer(Posted 2009) [#3]
I just don't want to get scammed is all, they appear to have won a lot of awards and such, but looks can be deceiving.

Well when I started looking for reviews, the first page I found was this:

http://www.webhostingreviews.com/just-host-reviews.htm

and then this

http://webhostinggeeks.com/user-reviews/index2.php?sort=1&item_id=29

and then this

http://www.webhosting-dir.com/justhost-review.com.html

I haven't found a site with m(any) positive reviews yet.

Typically with good hosts you find at least a 50/50 split because people are inherently more likely to write bad reviews than good ones. This place doesn't seem to be anywhere close to 50/50 anywhere though.

With regards to unlimited and too good to be true, their terms of service state

We reserve the right, in our sole discretion, to discontinue service to any customer with a website or other hosted data that takes up more than 10% of the server resources and/or 10% of the server's CPU. This means that if your website is found to be utilizing more than 10% of the CPU and memory of the service, we reserve the right to take your site offline.

So it's unlimited right up until they take your site down. Since you don't know how many sites they're going to host you with, you don't really know how likely you are to be using more than 10% of the resources. But hey, that's true of any host which offers unlimited anything. I've said it so many times before, but there's no such thing as unlimited.

Wow that is terrible. What would you suggest is a good alternative?

AJ00200(Posted 2009) [#6]
t35.com -I use the free one for my site and its good, so the paid one must be even better.

Sauer(Posted 2009) [#7]
PHP is not listed as one of the features on t35.com, so I don't think I can use them.

This suggests otherwise:
PHP 5.x
Both free and paid hosting offers the latest in PHP with many included modules.

Sauer(Posted 2009) [#9]
Oh I was looking in the advanced features, overlooked it.

Maybe I'll give it a try...

The only real indicator about the potential quality of a host is their price. If it's less than $20 or even $30 per month, you better forget it. If we are talking about the professional sites than the best option is to get the whole server for yourself. It's cheaper than one would expect. Also, don't forget to phone them and ask for the real amount of bandwidth and transfer speed you are given. There are some nasty surprises in that area.

You've got to be very careful when using shared hosting. Most hosts these days claim to allow ridiculous amounts of transfer and storage to be used, but the reality is that they'll hit you with the fine print in their terms of service before you come close to using a fraction of your allowance. Particularly so for dynamic sites.

I use hostek for $5.00 USD per month, and 10.00 yearly renewal. I have tons of videos that are linked , many many images linked.. my website runs on it. I have NEVER been taken down for any reason aside from an occasional technical issue here and there over the years thats happened three or so times and never lasted more than a matter of hours.

Their Support email works great they actually reply within hours. Phone support is good too.

Im not running anything amazing on it , but its worked very well for me so far. Here is some of the pricing there

ASP
BASIC
Monthly:$5.00
Year:$59.95
Space:250 MB
Traffic:20 GB

ASP
BRONZE
Monthly:$7.95
Year:$79.95
Space:5,000 MB
Traffic:200 GB

ASP
SILVER
Monthly:$12.95
Year:$119.40
Space:10,000 MB
Traffic:300 GB
SQL 2008:100MB

Sauer(Posted 2009) [#13]
Thanks RifRaf, they seem to have reasonable prices for what I need. I'm looking at the bronze particularly, I already have one for free with about what Basic has.

There is another hosting service which caught my eye, should I ever venture into paid hosting someday:

https://www.ixwebhosting.com/

AdrianT(Posted 2009) [#15]
I use dreamhost which is pretty good if you work in a team and want easy to use SVN or CVS version control and trac included in the basic hosting package. I actually got a year hosting with them for free during the basketball world cup thing, but they aren't that expensive anyway.

I was just checking out ixwebhosting.com and noticed that they appear to have a lot of disgruntled customers. Seems that they've gone downhill in the last year or so.

It appears so. Perhaps I was blinded by the overly cheap prices.

Another one: http://www.bluehost.com

ziggy(Posted 2009) [#18]
I've been looking also for a hosting service for BLIde, as current one is a bit expensive but all cheaper alternatives I've found have a terrible bandwidth so finally I stuck with the expensive one (while I can afford it).
Don't go to Powweb.

CGV(Posted 2009) [#19]
Anyone else have any experience with RifRaf's recommendation, Hostek.

Their pricing looks really good, but according to their site they've been in business for 12 years and host over 23,000 sites and yet their forum shows only 90 threads with 105 posts.

Those numbers seem inconsistent to me.

Zethrax(Posted 2009) [#20]
Forums can be a bad indicator as the more active boards could be set to be only visible to logged in users (members).

I'd suggest checking their domain name at http://who.is . How long the domain has been registered, and how long it is pre-registered for are some indicators of how serious the company is.

Also, check their site out on the Wayback Machine at http://archive.org to see its past history.

okee(Posted 2009) [#21]
I'd highly recommend UnitedHosting
been with them for about 5 years on a reseller package.
They have top notch support, there's always 1 or 2 techs
on the forums answering questions as well as the very helpful community.

SLotman(Posted 2009) [#22]
Dreamhost is the best I can think of.

3 years with them, and everytime a problem comes up here and there (and it will always come up, no matter what server you are) they always were very helpful.

If you sign up with them, use the promo code "BLITZ3D" to get a good discount ;)
