Does anyone know how to build logic gates?

Arowx(Posted 2009) [#2]
Could you be more specific, I'm just guessing but are you refering to electronics?

Like and/not/or gates with wires...

Who was John Galt?(Posted 2009) [#4]
Two switches in parallel are like an or- if either is switched on, current flows

Two switches in series are like an and - they must both be switched on for current to pass

A switch that shorts a circuit to ground is like a not

If you're talking about building a transistor, it can be done at home, but you will have to do your own research.

You would use logic chips to build a circuit these days, few people resort to individual transistors unless it is a very small circuit.

First you need to decide on TTL chips which run at 5V or CMOS chips which have a much wider useable voltage range.

Look at this chip which is a quad 2 input AND gate i.e. 4 AND gates on a single chip

And here is its datasheet showing you the pin connections

http://docs-europe.electrocomponents.com/webdocs/0ca0/0900766b80ca0e37.pdf

From the data sheet you can see that they also do 3 input and 4 input AND gates.

Depending on the application you might also want to look at the 'schmitt trigger' devices which are less prone to being affected by noise.

If you want to build your own then here is an example of diode-transistor logic but integrated chips are cheaper and more reliable

Thanks so much.
Im trying to build an adding machine (because Im weird), and just didn't know hoe/where to build/get logic gates for it.

Thanks Again.

Good luck. Nice to see people still like building stuff and finding out how they work :)

MACH64 Programmable Logic Starter Kit

You can even buy software which allows you to build an electronic circuit and test it...not sure if there are any free ones available but SPICE has been around for a long time...

That MACH64 Thing looks really cool.
When the SPICE page says:
You can legally get versions for free
Does that mean w/o a GUI?

Also, does anyone know any websites/books about electronics.
I'm kind of new with, but I don't need a kids book telling me that electricity goes in a circle...
Perferably with info about transistors/resistors/capacitors...

It has a GUI, here's a free demo http://www.intusoft.com/demos.htm

this is completely free, http://www.falstad.com/circuit/
