I'm looking at writing up a reasonable size chm manual. Is there any particular chm editing software that you love or hate? Why?

Any recommendations/advice would be much appreciated.

I'm using WinCHM (http://www.softany.com/winchm/). I tested a few others a year ago and for me this works best for it's money ($89). There were better tools around, but at a much higher price.

If you're looking to do it cheap, try Maple Professional.

I use HelpNDoc. Version 2 will come soon and will add export abilities to PDF/Word.

This is all very interesting.

I totally love .chm help files. I don't know why - it is probably the way they are hyperlinked.

I'd love to see more people using chm.

If you search your system, you'll find tons of them embedded all over the place. I've probably got around 1,000 of them just on my main gaming system.

EDIT:
I had 679 of them.

EDIT:
I have 632 pdf files.

chm wins - like Blitz3D and XP, it is cute.

I haven't found a decent freeware solution so far.

Use PDF files. They will work out of the box and you don't have to worry about display / printing issues.

PDF is okay, but chms are just so much cooler. Hey, that "GrahamK" boy (who made Cobra) did chm help files - I wonder what he used?

winchm here too. like it a lot.

Thx for the help all. Still need to do a bit more evaluation, but I'm leaning towards buying a WinCHM license. The price is good.

There were better tools around, but at a much higher price.

I looked at Adobe Robohelp for about 5 seconds;) Same with Acrobat. Them prices are way too much, and the products themselves are major overkill for what I want to do.

Use PDF files.

I'll most likely create the pdf from the chm. WinCHM does this using Word 2007, and then indexes the chm headings as bookmarks in the pdf.

I totally love .chm help files.

I agree puki, I don't know why but given the choice I'd rather use a chm than a pdf.
