I hate cross posting, but this is urgent. My flat mate has just broken the boot of my vista machine misinstalling a linux on my labtop. Does anybody here know how to fix this without reinstalling the whole system=
Thanks!

fix mbr is a command, an utility or what? (I've never done this before...)

Yep, it will work - if you are lucky.

There is also a fixboot (ie fixboot c:) - but I have no idea what works with Vista. I use XP.

This covers Bootcfg too: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/termsf/p/fixboot.htm

If you boot from the Vista Install DVD, there's a 'repair boot' option, which will do the fixmbr and other things to straighten out most boot problems.

There are several levels of fixes, so you may need to choose the 'repair boot' multiple times. (I restored a disk image of my vista install that wouldn't start either, had to do the repair boot thing two or three times in a row, but after that everything was OK and it booted up fine without needing to do a full blown repair or reinstall.

as a last resort i guess you could kinda hook the hard drive up to a sata port on a normal pc or something and just read your files off it.
