I've allways liked Google because it has a clean and simple look, but it is a powerful searchengine with nice features, like image search, AND/OR, quotes and search tags like "site:".
Now suppose I want to quit using Google, which other search engines could provide a good alternative ?

http://www.altavista.com is the other main one I use.

There's hundreds.

I only use Google. Why would you need to give it up?

Yeh, leaving Google is like leaving Blitz3D - totally bent.

Here are the January 2009 search engine market shares:

google: 70.2%
yahoo: 19.3%
MSN/Live: 6.7%
ASK: 2.5%
AOL: 1.1%

Everyone else faded into insignificance.

From a practical point of view though, Google seems so much more relevant when it comes to search results that it's not even funny anymore. Sure you can move somewhere else if you don't like google, but the competition simply isn't as good.

In my opinion, it is unhealthy that Google has such a big share of the search market. I find Yahoo somewhat strange in it's results, compared to Google. I'll try MSN/Live.

xlsior(Posted 2009) [#7]
MSN/Live aren't any good either. :-?

Only 6.5% share after being the default search engine and even error handler on the default browser on an operating system that has a market monopoly should be downright emberassing IMHO.

Haha .. yes, you're right. It should be.

Personally I think Google rocks. Few other alternatives for you to try on:

I'm not a big fan of google either. They do seem to be into the passive surveilance thing or whatever you want to call it. Their mapping technology must be a great asset to terrorists, burglars, obsessive stalker types everywhere. What with satelite views of just about everything, and 360 street view of every house in america showing, entrances, exits, types of car you drive.

Getting a bit fed up with it, I suppose I should be happy I left the UK before they did the whole CCTV and average speed camera thing. Now it looks like 2/3 of British roads will be getting a 50mph speed limit using the new average speed monitoring devices.
