backup of old forum

Community Forums/General Help/backup of old forum

RemiD(Posted 2016) [#1]
Hello,

I have seen mentioned several times on these forums the old forum "blitzcoder.com" but i can't access the webpages or codes/files (even by using wayback machine), so i wonder if somebody has a backup of this old forum ?

I would be curious to read some of the old discussions and take a look at some of the old code examples...

Thanks !

RemiD(Posted 2016) [#2]
and while we're at it, i also would appreciate a backup of the old forum "blitz3dfr.com" because i also can't access the webpages or codes/files (even by using wayback machine)

Thanks,

Hey RemiD, blitzcoder is not recorded in wayback. You got some luck with blitz3dfr.com here but I would assume it will be limited or not all

@RutyKristi>>the problem with wayback machine is that you can't access everything...
But some members here may have a backup of the whole forum posts/codes so that's why i ask...

RustyKristi(Posted 2016) [#5]
yes, that's what I meant and the only way you can backup the whole forum is if you are the admin of the site via sql.

RemiD(Posted 2016) [#6]
I have seen that on the russian bb forum the admins have provided an archive with the posts/codes of the old forums (now down), so maybe there is one of the admins of those forums who will read this ? Who knows...

Zethrax(Posted 2016) [#7]

Some forum pages are only accessible to logged in users, but for the most part the public sections of a forum can be scraped like any other website. I doubt anyone actually took the time to do that, but I guess it's worth asking.

yes, I don't even entertain that idea and know someone would scrape a whole forum, unless you're some kind of webarchiving site like wayback machine.

Kryzon(Posted 2016) [#9]
Blitzcoder used to be archived with Archive.org (tutorials still had images etc.), I have personally used that in the past.
But then someone bought that domain and added robots.txt. Now it won't let you see the archived pages anymore, even though the robots.txt was added way after the website was discontinued and archived.

Well, I have an old copy, apparently from 2005, but even this lacks pretty much any dynamic (eg. forum) content. Fortunately the code examples and other static stuff still appear to work.

Unarchive, enter the inner BlitzCoder folder and hit index.html!

https://www.sendspace.com/file/s9grvc [137 MB]

I recently tried to do similar with this site, for posterity, but it gave similar results for anything dynamically-generated, as in forums, etc :(

(All done using HTTrack.)

EDIT: You might need 7z to unarchive, BTW.

RustyKristi(Posted 2016) [#11]
wow just downloaded and I remember this site was up a few months ago or the archives at least.

RustyKristi(Posted 2016) [#12]
btw, why do I always get expecting end of file when I try some code in the blitzcoder archives?

Kryzon(Posted 2016) [#13]
This seems to work:
http://iadbungler.free.fr/bcoder/code.shtml

RustyKristi(Posted 2016) [#14]
yea that's the one kryzon! :D

RemiD(Posted 2016) [#15]
@Kryzon>>thanks, i already knew this one, but i will retake a look anyway :)

Dan(Posted 2016) [#16]
@RustyKristi there is a Problem, probably with copy/paste or whatever.

If you look with the hex editor, you will recognize that all the space chars , arent $20 but $A0.

If you do full replace over with the hex editor (which is usually faster than manually), this error will disappear.

RemiD(Posted 2016) [#17]
@BlitzSupport>>thanks, i will take a look ! :)

RustyKristi(Posted 2016) [#18]
Ok thanks Dan, that explains it. I somehow knew the formatting was messed up there.

RemiD(Posted 2016) [#19]
If i copy paste, then try to build any code from iadbungler.free.fr/bcoder/code.shtml, i get weird errors messages even if the code seems correct... Any idea idea why ? I suppose this may be because there are unknown symbols added to display it properly in html ? Or maybe because the syntax is too old and not compatible with the last version of Blitz3d ?

RustyKristi(Posted 2016) [#20]
That's what I reported earlier RemiD, yes it's bad formatting. Maybe Linux Linefeeds?

RemiD(Posted 2016) [#21]
Oups, yes i missed some posts...

Dan(Posted 2016) [#22]
i guess their forum software was converting the spaces into alternative(or however do you call this $a0) space chars, to avoid problems with formating.

For example, if the software would seek for spaces and smilie chars, then using this alternative would not mess up the sourcecode.

For the blitz3dfr forum, you should ask the old admins if they got a backup ;)

by the way, the BlitzFr website is still working (we just didn't maintained it and payed the domain name)
It's still accessible there -> http://btfr.free.fr/_forum/index.php

Curiously, I totally forgot to backup Blitz3DFr ... So, I'll ask Filax if he still has it.

@Bobysait>>thanks for the link

It would be good if you can get a backup of the old Blitz3dfr forum, there may be some code examples which are not on these forums...

Also some backups of old russian forums are accessible here : http://forum.boolean.name/forumdisplay.php?f=47 (you can use google translate russian->english to understand what is going on)

Bobysait(Posted 2016) [#25]
So, we are both (me and filax) the most stupid admins in the world ^_^
Noone of us stored a backup from the database ...
I still have all the files to restore the structur and media, but the forum will be totally empty ... no sources, no post, nothing. Useless :)

Sorry for that ... I think we've lost a bunch of archives (and screw me, I had some codes I posted on the archives of the forum that I don't have anymore on my hard-drives which are probably lost forever)

RemiD(Posted 2016) [#26]
Yes i remember that there were a few good codes which were only on the blitz3dfr forum.

Well, that's not good news, but whatever, with the knowledge/skill we have accumulated, all can be recoded/recreated anyway. ;)

Bobysait(Posted 2016) [#27]
Actually, I found the files I've backed-up, Filax found a probably up-to-date database.
So finally, He's aliiiive (again) ... well, not alive, but it still exists, for posterity.

http://mdt.bigbang.free.fr/blitz3dfr/_fofo/index.php

Don't click on the logo, it's a flash media and the url in it is static so it leads to the old domain name which is not allocated anymore. (so, it can lead anywhere ... and have probably been redirected by spammers)

ps : the structur is too old, so I will probably update it to at least a 2.0 version of smf, then ... I'll lock the forum in "read-only" mode.

RemiD(Posted 2016) [#28]
ahahah this is weird to see this again :)

thanks

BlitzSupport(Posted 2016) [#29]
Awesome, found instructions to build 32-bit DLLs easily!

http://mdt.bigbang.free.fr/blitz3dfr/_fofo/index.php?topic=2703.0

Always thought this was hideously complicated (it was undocumented), but turns out to be really easy.

Thanks Bobysait/Filax!
