Hey again,
So I've still not come to a decision on my logo designs but I'll get to that later in time. Atm I am reworking my website and just wanted to get some feedback from you folks on what you like/dislike.
The new design is at https://photongamemanager.com/Test001/

I think you'll agree it is much better than the old site but I'd still like to make it as good as possible so any comments are really appreciated.
Thanks
:)

I like the website - clean, tells you what you need and the scrolling images are snappy.

The logo, to my eye, stands out as being the weak point. Do some image searches on photon, light etc. to get some inspiration.

App looks pretty. What's that written in?

Why is your Linux version lacking features, crashy and full of bugs? :-p

Matty(Posted 2015) [#4]
Just a thought....

when I hear the word "Photon" my (physics/maths) mind goes straight to ideas of particles/waves of light etc - your logo is more like a purple blobby thing to me...but the word photon captures the idea of beams/waves/particles of light streaming from something...

alternatively when I used to do a bit of rendering in softimage there was a global illuminiation method called photon mapping which also came to mind - basically the idea of scattering light 'blobs' or 'particles' around an environment....

so maybe something to do with scattered light?

@Brucey: Initially in Blitz3D but now in Blitzmax with minib3d :)
And the Linux version is miles behind because I didn't code with multi-platform in mind to begin with, eventually I have a mac version too but I've got some work to do before that is ready

@Matty: Thanks for the ideas, I really do need to put a lot of effort into the logo but I'm not so good with that whereas I'm OK at web development :)

I've had a go at some rough logo ideas and would love to get some feedback:
Logos 1-3
Logos 4-5

My personal favourites are the 1 and 5 but the non website logo is a bit plain on 1

Rick Nasher(Posted 2015) [#7]
Like 3 and 5 best, 3 suggest/reminds me of a radar or audio-like feature, so guess that has to go. 5 is the most clear one imho.

PhotonTom(Posted 2015) [#8]
Yeah I must say I am leaning towards 5 as well. What do other people think?
If they are all crap and I need to go back to the drawing board please don't hesitate to say so! :)

Tom, they're all sub-par. I was in two minds whether to post this, but as they say 'you asked for it'. You've obviously put a lot of effort into this software, and an app like this needs a strong logo, IMO. I think you need to start from scratch rather than trying different effects with the 'P'.

Here's one idea- get yourself or a friend with good handwriting to write 'photon' in fancy, joined up style. Scan it. Run it through some kind of glow effect in a paint package to make it look neon, a bit like this.

You could try brainstorming a few ideas. You don't need to develop them all; just play about with some effects.

Please take this in the spirit it is intended- I think it's the advice you need and I'm not trying to be an ass here.

PhotonTom(Posted 2015) [#10]
I don't get offended easy (when it comes to design) so I appreciate your honesty :)
My main problem is that I need a logo that will scale well. I would like to have a full name logo on the website but I also need a small logo for the favicon and the program icons, that is why I went for the separated 'P' idea. Maybe I'll just have to have a logo and 'Photon' written next to it.

Who was John Galt?(Posted 2015) [#11]
You have the right attitude my friend- you will go far. You could draw something then trace over it in Inkscape or the like. That will give you a fully scalable logo.

Matty(Posted 2015) [#12]
I dont know where you live or your financial situation but have you considered approaching a local graphic design business...not via email etc but simply going to their office and getting an estimate for a number of designs?

PhotonTom(Posted 2015) [#13]
What do you folks think of these:

Colour will come later but I would love it if you could say which logo's like/dislike and which font you prefer.

PhotonTom(Posted 2015) [#14]
Updated previous post. What do ya think?

Who was John Galt?(Posted 2015) [#15]
Massive improvement. Personally I would have conceptualised the logo aroung 'photon' rather than 'game', but that's a personal preference.

The fonts are a a lot better and the whole thing's a lot cleaner. Whilst I like the joystick icon, I think working it in as the 'P' kills the clean lines of the text. Quite like the one on the top right. Have you tried just sticking the joy next to the text?

PhotonTom(Posted 2015) [#16]
Ooops, linked the wrong version. In my opinion the joystick doesn't work in either case as you get a double P or unclean text which looks bad in both case so I binned the idea see: https://photongamemanager.com/Test001/Joystick.png

My newest set of logos is:

Think the bottom one nails it! Good stuff, Tom.

xlsior(Posted 2015) [#18]
I think those last ones all look pretty good.

Matty(Posted 2015) [#19]
On that link I like the second( 2 of 6) the most.

Kryzon(Posted 2015) [#20]
I don't think you're exploring enough.
All your variations involve changing the symbol and the typeface (the "font"), but they all have that title and subtitle layout.

You won't find something new and original if you don't agressively explore new layouts and designs (best done with pencil and paper so you can quickly try new ideas).
How much reference did you collect for this design project? You need to be inspired in order to design something beautiful. You can collect images of not only existing logos, but any kind of design or style that inspires or interests you.

Before you start collecting references, you need to answer this to yourself: what are you trying to achieve with your logo, what is the message you want it to convey?

PhotonTom(Posted 2015) [#21]
@kryzon
I did do a lot of exploring with the logo and a little with the layout but I didn't post most of it, the ones I have posted are my refined versions.

Newest ideas: https://photongamemanager.com/Test001/New%20Logo%20Ideas%208.png

Also again folks if all of the designs are sub-par please don't hesitate to tell me.

PhotonTom(Posted 2015) [#22]
Ok, I think I'm going to use the Arcade cabinet for my logo but I'm having trouble choosing a font. Which one do you folks think works the best:
https://photongamemanager.com/Test001/font%20ideas%201.png
And do you have any tips on choosing a font for a logo?

Kryzon(Posted 2015) [#23]
The bottom right one is what I'd choose from the set, but I'd play with different designs and layouts anyway.

About choosing a typeface, why not consult a specialised book?
