If you're stuck in full-screen, try right-Ctrl 'F' to switch between full-screen/windowed.

(Also, I think right-Ctrl 'I' may be what you originally needed.)

According to Google :

http://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch01.html

To return ownership of keyboard and mouse to your host operating system, VirtualBox reserves a special key on your keyboard for itself: the "host key". By default, this is the right Control key on your keyboard; on a Mac host, the default host key is the left Command key. You can change this default in the VirtualBox Global Settings, see Section 1.15, “Global Settings”.

I think during the first time of clicking into a virtual box machine a window popups up describing which key is set as host key.

Also the best is to use the guest additions so it does not need the capturing at all.

Mac vm does not need that but also does not offer guest additions (as Apple forbid that in their EULA or whatever).
