I have experience of using phpBB in the past for building/moderating/running a online forum. I found the only allow admin sanctioned posts particularly useful within the phpBB forum creator.

Is there any other forum creation tools that you can suggest? Thanks, BP.

vBulletin is pretty much the daddy. However, vBulletin-powered forums are an easy target for spambots unless you've the nouse to add in some bespoke security measures.

We used some pretty cool software for the Indiecodez website, but honestly, I'm buggered if I can remember what it was called. Dabhand might remember....?

[edit] It was SMF - http://www.simplemachines.org/

(thx Dabz!)

I use fluxbb, years old fork of punbb :D

It has up to now "additional features" (no message system, no attachments, no extensive skinability) but it is fast and uses not that much ressources.
Of course you have to install some mods to have anti-spambot functionality.
