Corrupt files acting like viruses

I accidently used my vacuum cleaner near my computer tonight, and now there's lines running through the logo when it starts up, but no other effects I've seen. But I'm wondering, how dangerous can a corrupt file be compared to a virus? I assume viruses are only able to do the kind of damage they do because someone worked pretty hard to make them that way, but could just a randomly corrupt file ever be as bad, or even be contagious like a virus? I assume it's extremely unlikely, but I just don't want to ruin anyones day using that computer online when I could easily reinstall Windows.

Do you mean your motherboard BIOS boot logo? I'd just try resetting you BIOS CMOS to see if that fixes it. Not sure what your vacuum cleaner had to do with it, though. :)

If there is no surge protection then there is a chance of power spikes that can damage components. Something like this happened to me a few years back.
