can anybody confirm this: win8 freezes a blitz3d exe when certain pcm wavs are played and no headphones or speakers are plugged in??? It's a fatalistc freeze because it will cover the desktop dominantly, hiding the task manager. all you can do is, on the bottom task bar you can focus the taskmanager and then navigate by watching the little thumbnail of it. Really a nasty crash. As win8 is indeed capable of detecting whether a sounddevice is connected or not, and since it didn't crash anymore after I plugged in the headphones, it could really be that way. I wouldn't be surprised. And they call my work silly...

I remember an old bug report many many years ago that blitz3d would not work without a soundcard...so maybe it is being triggered in a similar way?

Edit: ignore me.

2nd crash: due to trying to play a sound without the speakers plugged in. Yes, W7 detected that, blamed the program and crashed it.
- Then I plugged my speakers in. I hope all my users will too.

it actually happens with my subgame, http://www.melog.ch/subgame/ so if anyone wanna try to reproduce it. Maybe it's the Wav files? (happens with explosion wavs, but also some more.) It's a 64 bit dual cpu dual core intel thingie with onboard sound.

Quiet a showstopper, to see your exe freezing w8. Well actually that's pretty much of an achievement, considering how much the user is locked out from security features... Obviously Norton has now higher privilegs than I, the admin. Or has Privilegs at all.

ah, i just see it's true, speakers required. and it really hides the task manager, like when someone forgot to plug in earphones before he start the game. This is totally silly.

FAQ
Q: help, my computer exploded!
A: always make shure to have speakers connected.

If it is like 7, the only person who has full-admin privileges is the OS itself. A user, even an admin, will never be able to have full-admin privileges.

Vista was even worse. 'Admin' accounts were nothing of the sort. You basically had to hack the bloody thing to get proper admin access. :/

if I'll ever stop using blitz3d, then cause of the OS. things like AVlinux are in my focus lately. Esp. since w8 is a book with 7 seals just like linux to me, and linux became much more usefriendly in terms of auto-setup and gui.

Just looking at Microsoft's track record so far:

Dos 6.22 - Functional.
Windows 3.1 - Terrible.
Windows 95 - Good.
Windows 98 - BAD.
Windows Me - WORSE.
Windows 2000 - Good.
XP - Better.
XP 64 - Stop teasing...
Vista - Donkey balls.
Windows 7 - Excellent.
Windows 8 - Quickly becoming diarrhea.

So if you calculate the probability, carry the 1, minus the x-factor... I think Windows 9 won't be so bad?

TaskMaster(Posted 2013) [#11]
98 wasn't bad. It was 95 with USB support.

I don't recall anything 'wrong' with 98 compared to 95, I loved 95 over 3.11, hardly used it mind as I didn't own a PC at the time, but we did have it on demo PC's, but most things I would use were still DOS based anyhow.

And by things I mean games.

I have no beef with W8, if I have to turn it on instead of wake it up, I just enter my pin hit win+D and am back to a more familiar layout, crank up the internet and I'm away.

I'm only on W8 cos W7 was discontinued via brand names that sold via PC World and the likes, though my cousin got a good discount off his lap top as it was W7, same spec W8 was £50-75 more, but retailed for the same price as the W7 did prior to ditching old stock.

Mind you I only went to vista as the 2nd hand box had it on, but even then I didn't find anything super expletive inducing about that either.

Maybe it's because I have simple requirements from my pc, internet email DVD's and porn, this new box now has a semi decent GFX card so I can add Steam to that list.

The only thing I missed from XP was not finding where temporary internet files is, this became a moot point when I was told about the Firefox YouTube downloader add ons.
but now they don't work for music videos as Vimeo are using a different process or something.

I had a lot of issues with Windows 98. The second edition that came later did little to clear up my problems. Constant blue screens, dos games never worked, and very virus prone. Much of this could be attributed to the fact I was only a kid, boy did Win98 teach me about security and everything not to do on a computer.

Okay I'm willing to forgive Windows 98 because many of my favorite games came out during that era. But other than the games my experience with it was hell.

Try using Orbit Downloader. It offers multiple ways of snatching files. It's never let me down even after over 5 years of use. Edit your Host file to stop Orbit from checking your computer for software updates to your programs. It gets really annoying. Other than that nitpick it works great.
