Hey everyone!

I'm working on a small platformer game right now(Made using my P.U.K.I game engine:)
called Cool Kid, about a super hero who's around 12 years old.

I was trying to figure out how I want the game to look, and just
finished the concept photo for level 1.

It is my goal, to try and make this game look better than ALL of
my previous games.

Tell me what you think!

(Especially about the trees. The're a bit iffy)

It looks "ok" but your art style is very mixed!

You have gradient/textured backgrounds, solid blocks of color (road), 3d-rendered-ish looking character and hand-drawn/painted looking trees.

Stick to one style and just put the effort in even if it seems like it will take forever. Mainly referring to the sky with that comment. If you made it a more detailed, hand drawn look with clouds/sun/etc it would look good :)

Just a little tweak for ya!

GfK(Posted 2009) [#3]
Trees don't stand up on their roots like that. They're roots, not legs. ;)

WERDNA(Posted 2009) [#4]
skn3[ac] wow, that looks pretty impressive.

I'll see if I can make it look more like that, because that is the
look I'm going for.

lol, good point GFK.

I'll work today on a modified version of this, and try to make it look
more like skn3[ac]'s image :)

I'll see if I can get it done by this afternoon and upload it, plus I'll try
and put some enemies in the photo to.

Thanks!

Well this is definitely an improvement :)

What do you think?

skn3(Posted 2009) [#6]
Much better :).. Well done

WERDNA(Posted 2009) [#7]
Thanks!

I'll post some more artwork when I get it done.
Right now I'm going to work on my P.U.K.I game engine so
it can handle what I have in mind for Cool Kid.

Cool kid will be a fairly ordinary platforming game in most respects
except for one. There will be at least two 'planes' that the character
can switch back and forth from.

A 'plane' being defined as the area he can walk in.
For instance in this image, the road he's on would be one plane. He
can't go up or down, just forward and backward.
(By up and down, I mean walk up and down across the road. He can still jump)
If I were to put in another plane, it would be located in the background
behind the lighter colored trees.
So then he could walk forward and backward back there as well.

This would make a nice element for puzzles, with him constantly
switching back and forth between planes. To dodge enemies or obstacles,
to get around obstructions, etc.

Hope my explanation makes sense,

WERDNA

Yeah that makes sense, sounds like a good idea! You just need to make sure your level design fits it properly and that things don't get too cluttered :)

mtnhome3d(Posted 2009) [#9]
sounds kinda like super paper mario, in that game you switch from viewing the world on the x axis so to speak to the z axis by "flipping" lots clever little things you can do with it.

WERDNA(Posted 2009) [#10]
Good point mtnhome :)

I more had guardian heroes in mind, but super paper mario works as
well.

I'll upload a demo when I finish with the first level.
(Things are pretty slow right now, because I have to code the P.U.K.I
game engine so it can handle this)

slenkar(Posted 2009) [#11]
skn3 really helped you there.

The plane idea sounds like a game I used to play for zxspectrum

WERDNA(Posted 2009) [#12]
wow.

There is actually a game called that!?

Ginger Tea(Posted 2009) [#13]
yep and its sequal how to be a complete bitch
strange but true and perhaps only in the uk

skn3(Posted 2009) [#14]
Heh American version was probably "how to be a complete douchebag"

GfK(Posted 2009) [#15]
There is actually a game called that!?
It was based on a book of the same title, written by Ade Edmondson who was in The Young Ones and Bottom with Rik Mayall.

i saw him live a few months ago with his bad shephereds, punk songs played folk not as good or funny as hayseed dixie or the ukelelle orchestra of great brittain
methinks he should stick to acting and toilet humour
but vyvian was my fave yungun

Much appreciated :)

Although I won't have anything to post in here for a few more days.
I've been down with some sort of flu, and haven't been able to get much
work done lately.

swine flu?

thank goodness it cant come through the internet or we would all be sick...

beanage(Posted 2009) [#21]
oh, and in addition the h3n3 swine flu virus would mutate and procreate with all sorts of worms, viruses, and trojans from the www, and we all would be doomed!!!!

WERDNA(Posted 2009) [#22]
Nope, just normal flu :)

I actually nearly have a demo of this ready.

You can currently walk around in a 8000 pixel wide level much like
the one above, and switch planes.

You can either walk on the road, or walk in the background behind
some of the trees.
(I split up the tree images so the player is drawn in front of some, and
behind others to give the appearance of depth)

Right now I'm working on getting the enemies to behave and not
be able to collide with, or attack the player when hes on the back plane.

Also since this was made using the P.U.K.I game engine, I will soon
have a new version of P.U.K.I to upload. The main features being
the ability to include planes in your game, the fact that when autoscroll
is turned off so the level scrolls only when the player walks forward
or backward has been fixed, and the removal of nearly all of the previously
lengthy loading time between levels.

Look Forward To Your Feedback!

Blitzplotter(Posted 2009) [#23]
sounds like your making good progress Werdna, good luck with it.

WERDNA(Posted 2009) [#24]
Thanks Blitzplotter!

As my sig says, I've been pretty busy lately to get much work done on
any of my games, although I do nearly have a demo of this.
Its pretty basic right now, with no platforms, all you do is walk along
an 8000 pixel wide road area, with several enemies, and you can
switch between planes.

Hopefully I'll have a chance to work on this soon!
