Blitz3dCoder(Posted 2008) [#1]
For you people who were in the paint competition and those who were not, how about we have a contest for the best picture in photoshop

mintybreath(Posted 2008) [#2]
Sounds like a good idea. can it be, like an edited picture, or does it have to be hand drawn?

Blitz3dCoder(Posted 2008) [#3]
You can post either!
Do you think I should be aloud to participate?

Gabriel(Posted 2008) [#4]
Why not have a theme? Doesn't have to be something tangible like cars, it could be something more abstract like time or darkness. Then you (hopefully) have a little more coherence between all the entries and it won't be too hard to judge. You pick the theme this time and then the winner picks for the next competition or something?

Blitz3dCoder(Posted 2008) [#5]
Ok, lets change it to drawn from scratch? (input encouraged)

mintybreath(Posted 2008) [#6]
sure, although i probably wont be able to do crap. I have a few good ones though, ill sort through and post later.

Blitz3dCoder(Posted 2008) [#7]
Heres one

Heres another

I did these for backgrounds, sorry so big!

youll have to win, then choose the next one,
or we could just screw that, and have that be the next one...?

mintybreath(Posted 2008) [#8]
Here is a little something i whipped up. I am sure it wont win, as it is not the best i can do. Secondly i dont have photoshop, i have Corel Paint Shop, which really isnt bad, but it isnt as good as photoshop.

but any why, thought i would post it. Ill probably post another later.

Blitz3dCoder(Posted 2008) [#9]
kool!

We should expand it to these two programs, since not all of us have it!

I fooled around with a corel demo before, it was pretty cool.

mintybreath(Posted 2008) [#10]
It is a fairly good program. Doesnt compare with paintshop though.

I think, you should be able to use any other photo program. Since photoshop is the best out there, using anything less should be allowed. As long as its a photo editing program.

Blitz3dCoder(Posted 2008) [#11]
sounds good to me.

Doggie(Posted 2008) [#12]

portrait of a serial killer
by
Dog

Blitz3dCoder(Posted 2008) [#13]
hmmm... abstract, really neat. is the killer the redhead?

xlsior(Posted 2008) [#14]
Here's a few of mine (made for various fark.com photoshop contests in the past)

Pope John Paul II (original and photoshopped)

-
(Probably the most challenging part of that one was to turn the white robes gold colored)

Mike Tyson:

xlsior(Posted 2008) [#15]
and here's a from-scratch one as well:

Blitz3dCoder(Posted 2008) [#16]
Those are good!
Love the wood texture on the last one

Doggie(Posted 2008) [#17]
@Blitz3dCoder
The "killer" is YOU!
It's an awful picture. (kind of the point)

=)

mintybreath(Posted 2008) [#18]
Lol, pope loves star trek. Very nice picture! =D

Doggie(Posted 2008) [#19]

This is more representative of my work but wasn't done in photoshop.

Blitz3dCoder(Posted 2008) [#20]
what is it? (other than random) lol

Chad(Posted 2008) [#21]

A real photograph? No no no, actual screenshot blacked and whited, blurred, noised, and pasterized =)

Doggie(Posted 2008) [#22]
@Blitz3dCoder

I love questions that answer themselves.

Quite...

Blitz3dCoder(Posted 2008) [#23]
What is it screenshot from? one of your projects or is it from another game?

Blitz3dCoder(Posted 2008) [#24]
what did you do that random one with?

Ked(Posted 2008) [#25]
Here's one I put together:

Blitz3dCoder(Posted 2008) [#26]
thats cool! what with ?

Ked(Posted 2008) [#27]
Thanks.

Photoshop.

mintybreath(Posted 2008) [#28]
Very nice Ked.

I gotta get photoshop. Corel just isnt doing it for me

Blitz3dCoder(Posted 2008) [#29]
its worth it, you should get a wacom tablet to, they help greatly. Sure beats the ol mouse! :)

Chroma(Posted 2008) [#30]
I only have Paint Shop Pro 9. I'm offended!

Moraldi(Posted 2008) [#31]
Ked:
I hope you don't mind :)

Fuller(Posted 2008) [#32]
Is there supposed to be a change in the logo?

Moraldi(Posted 2008) [#33]
This is only just for fun.
If Ked will ask it then I will remove it immediately.

Genexi2(Posted 2008) [#34]
It's surprising how much time I spend in my 3hr English classes doodling....

Drawn from scratch in my sketchbook via blue col-erase pencil, scanned/quickly-coloured in Photoshop7.

[EDIT] Hmm, wonder what it looks like for a 50x50 sig img.

jfk EO-11110(Posted 2008) [#35]
Wow Doggie I didn't know you're such a talented painter. Is this done in your computer or manually on paper?

Doggie(Posted 2008) [#36]
Thank you!
That pic I used Twisted Brush
http://www.pixarra.com/
I also use paintshop, Deep Paint and ZBrush 2.

Most of my pics are on my old computer. Someday, if I get around to it, I'll put up a gallery.

Ked(Posted 2008) [#37]
Ked:
I hope you don't mind :)

I probably should, but I don't. :)

I've downloaded Gimp but haven't really worked at it. It does create some good super nova effects. :P

Moraldi(Posted 2008) [#38]
You've got the meaning!. I just wanted to remind Gimp. It is powerful, free and its worth to check out even if someone uses the leader Photoshop.
I have found in Gimp some very useful filters. There is, for example, a filter you can make a texture seamless with a click!

Blitz3dCoder(Posted 2008) [#39]
gotta get that

ICECAP(Posted 2008) [#40]
Right here is an entry, for all the Greg Martin lovers out there:

Excuse the size, made it that big so people could use it as their desktop if they so wished... It's mine at the moment.

Everything was made in photoshop from scratch apart from the space ship, that was 3dsmax.

Blitz3dCoder(Posted 2008) [#41]
Dang, how long did the whole thing take you?

ICECAP(Posted 2008) [#42]
The background of stars was the easy part, took me about an hour.

The planets took me about half an hour each, just due to shadow painting and trying to get it looking correct.

The spaceship took the longest, that took a day and a bit.

Of course these are estimates, I don't really keep track on how long stuff takes, I just make it. :D

So those times are probably give or take an hour.

Blitz3dCoder(Posted 2008) [#43]
that was good, my two look like crap now

Genexi2(Posted 2008) [#44]
Alright, I just have to ask: Where the bloody hell do you learn to render stuff like that in PhotoShop. @.@
(particularly the planet, I'm assuming there's some layer-trickery involved)

Also, got a higher-resolution version of it by anychance?

mintybreath(Posted 2008) [#45]
Wow, really really nice space picture

Blitz3dCoder(Posted 2008) [#46]
is this enuff 2 vote?

sting(Posted 2008) [#47]
ok whats the code to post imgs cuz its not working for me...

Gabriel(Posted 2008) [#48]
No code is required. You simply enter the (URL-encoded) address of the image and it shows.

sting(Posted 2008) [#49]

Blitz3dCoder(Posted 2008) [#50]
hey sting, would i be aloud to use that img?

sting(Posted 2008) [#51]
sure no prob. I could give you one w/ out the burn layer aswell.

ICECAP(Posted 2008) [#52]
@Genexi2

Yeah I thought that once too, but its surprisingly simple. By experimenting with the noise filter, and clone brush, as well as colour filters, you can come up with some pretty convincing star clusters.

For the planets, its all about painting with the brush tool using large sizes and a mode other than Normal. Again experimentation is the key. I start out with a coloured circle and work from that, shadowing and highlighting etc.

You'll find tutorials all over the net to help you get started...

And no, that is the highest res I have of that. Its the size I painted it at, so there is no anti-alias-resizing-trickery going on there.

@mintybreath

Thanks! :D

Blitz3dCoder(Posted 2008) [#53]
sting: Post one without the shadow layer,so i can see.
Also if you want, put somewhere in the corner that you made it, so im not taking credit for your art. I could do it but...

mintybreath(Posted 2008) [#54]
Wow. so you painted the whole planet?

I thought you did what my friend did, and took a photo off the internet and did a circle wrap thingy. Damn, now its even more impressive.

I think i know who im voting for..

Blitz3dCoder(Posted 2008) [#55]
Sting, also, could you make it a bmp?

*(Posted 2008) [#56]
xlsior: you like digger I take it?

sting(Posted 2008) [#57]
http://tinyurl.com/3azzc6

There just wantet to try out the url thing. :P
Anyway I hope taking off the top layer is what you ment.

Blitz3dCoder(Posted 2008) [#58]
there both pretty cool. Which one would look better as the background for the blitz3d psp theme im working on?

sting(Posted 2008) [#59]
Ooo.. Snazzy. I personaly like the one w/ out the burn overlay. Mainly because i just put that in as an opticle illusion for this spacific board. :)

xlsior(Posted 2008) [#60]
xlsior: you like digger I take it?

One of my all-time favorites...

One of these days i'll finish a remake. :-?

Blitz3dCoder(Posted 2008) [#61]
kool thats wat ill do

Mr. Sandman(Posted 2008) [#62]
Thanks for the image sting_gs13, sure i use it! ;)

mintybreath(Posted 2008) [#63]
I think we should vote now. Who agrees?

Ked(Posted 2008) [#64]
I do.

Blitz3dCoder(Posted 2008) [#65]
I do, so lets vote!
-------------------------

I actually liked ICECAP's the best for drawn from scratch

Sting_gs13's was useful in one of my projects

And xlsior did great in bringing out the inner pope

|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Since this was a contest for from scratch, I would say ICECAPE

smilertoo(Posted 2008) [#66]
Amazing how many people here have such expensive software.

Blitz3dCoder(Posted 2008) [#67]
yeah, the most expensive i can go is photoshop. 3ds max is like $9000 where do people get it?

ICECAP(Posted 2008) [#68]
Helps when you own a business that does 3D renderings. :D
Wait till you start getting into the custom plugins too. Vray and plant/tree creation plugins, that'll set you back another US$3000 or so.

Discreet used to offer a version for educational use as well, I started on that years ago, only cost me about US$150.

sting(Posted 2008) [#69]
It helps when you do visual effects and motion graphics for a living. Getting software like this I mean.

mintybreath(Posted 2008) [#70]
I vote ICECAP all the way. They were all great, but i think ICECAP's exceeded my expectations.

Gabriel(Posted 2008) [#71]
Blitz3dCoder gets my vote for the comet picture. Mainly because the tail of the comet has a very unusual appearance which doesn't look like a computer painted effect. It looks like someone has dipped a piece of string in paint and used that to get the effect.

Blitz3dCoder(Posted 2008) [#72]
Come On, we need more than two or three votes this time.

Jim Teeuwen(Posted 2008) [#73]
There are some interesting and easy to follow tutorials on how to do star fields and planets like the one's above.

The one's I found most helpful are made by Greg Martin.

Starfields: http://gallery.artofgregmartin.com/tuts_arts/making_a_star_field.html
Planetoids: http://gallery.artofgregmartin.com/tuts_arts/making_a_planet.html

ICECAP(Posted 2008) [#74]
Are there ones to teach you how to make really good looking 3D models of space ships too? :D

Knowing how is half the battle, but it helps to also have some extra *zang* to pull it all together.

Blitz3dCoder(Posted 2008) [#75]
ill have to try those

Is anybody else going to vote?

Blitz3dCoder(Posted 2008) [#76]
ok no more votes?
icecap 2
me 1

YellBellzDotCom(Posted 2008) [#77]
Well heck just for fun...

I drew it then colored it and touched it up on Photoshop. Doing stuff like this every now and then sure is fun.

mintybreath(Posted 2008) [#78]
Nice pic Xyle.
Is that Link from the Zelda serries?

Yahfree(Posted 2008) [#79]
My entry-

What do I win?

Blitz3dCoder(Posted 2008) [#80]
lol

Tyler(Posted 2008) [#81]

All hand-painted, no reference photo or layering with them.

mintybreath(Posted 2008) [#82]
@Tyler: You made that? Geeze. That is good.

Looks like you've got some competition ICECAP

Trader3564(Posted 2008) [#83]
Ked , could you render me one of those fireworks in transparant PNG? using SetColor i could make a cool fireworks show of that. XD

Blitz3dCoder(Posted 2008) [#84]
Since nobody is Voting, Maybe we could even have the post renamed to Photoshop Gallery, or something? (hint hint)

Tyler(Posted 2008) [#85]
@mintybreath - Thanks for the compliment, but it's only the third or fourth one I've tried, and it took about a week to do, so it's not as good as it should be, but I'm working on others.

Oh, and I vote for myself, :P of course.

Blitz3dCoder(Posted 2008) [#86]
I thought it was cool

Blitz3dCoder(Posted 2008) [#87]
i got another one! I did this in like an hour about an hour ago.

D_Town_Tony(Posted 2008) [#88]
Here's one of mine

Blitz3dCoder(Posted 2008) [#89]
I know this is old, but I forgot about this post till now and had to complement this great drawing. tony, your robot one was great too, do you do this for a living?

D_Town_Tony(Posted 2008) [#90]
unfortunately no, its just a hobby. I'm an industrial designer which is still a fun creative profession so I can't really complain.

Blitz3dCoder(Posted 2008) [#91]
Well...
There have been some new people on this site, and i was thinking...
I would resurect this thread, and see what new artists have to offer.
Its not really a contest anymore, just an unnoficial gallery specifying photoshop.

Ked(Posted 2008) [#92]
I would start a new thread so people don't have to scroll down so far. :P

Blitz3dCoder(Posted 2008) [#93]
aight.

Kcarlino(Posted 2009) [#94]
Perhaps a little late to this thread but doggie mentioned the image created was with TwistedBrush, just a small point of interest perhaps is that TwistedBrush is a BlitzPlus application!!

Ken

D4NM4N(Posted 2009) [#95]
Perhaps a little late to this thread
Maybe just a little :/
