No terrain application was used - in fact, no additional software was used.

This scene is purely coded terrain. Who needs terrain applications when it can be coded?

All texures were designed by "sswifty".

Feel free to get off your knees as you leave the thread.

Well, yeah... That's... a road...

chwaga(Posted 2007) [#3]
awesome, now, before I can be fully impressed I will need source code for...verification that a terrain app wasn't used. Definately not for stealing....

look, I'll say this nice and simple : put it on the code archives or we'll kill you.

The terrain is an array.

Each square chunk is a separate mesh.

The idea was stolen from someone who went on to write their own terrain system for their project.

Personally, I think it looks pretty damn sexy.

I also believe it could easily be mistaken for a commercial game scene.

Straight roads are easy... Put a couple of bends in it ;)

puki(Posted 2007) [#6]
I can do crossroads.

Fuller(Posted 2007) [#7]
okay, hand over sswift's textures! ...so i can give them back... maybe?

Rob Farley(Posted 2007) [#8]
Bends are the tricky bit! Well roads that don't follow the grid.

I came up with a system (although never completed it 100%) where you could draw on roads at any angle, which allowed you to create curves (made out of several straight bits).

The main map was a height map with a grid system for the main terrain.

It was pretty straight forward working out which grid boxes shouldn't be there for the road mesh to be inset in.

The first tricky bit was creating the additional triangles to join the grid up with the road mesh, that in the grand scheme of things was pretty easy.

The bit that was hard though which I never got right was working out the uv coords on these extra triangles so that the surrounding grid textures flowed into the road correctly.

And road intersections never worked properly either, again, confused uv maps were the culprit again.

Would have been cool to have got that working though!

I will solve it with separate, curved, bend textures. I just slap one on a section of mesh.

My system is not limited to a set number of textures. I can use hundreds of base textures that can then be further combined to simulate.

Most terrain apps limit the number of base textures you can use to 6.

Get back on your knees.

So not entirely unlike the one I used for my helicopter game then!

puki(Posted 2007) [#11]
I forgot about that.

Here it is:

Email me your code. I'll take a look.

Finally 'you have seen the light'!

Now, include procedural texture generation capabilities and I'll be impressed. ;)

Why do you need a road in a chess game?

lol

chwaga(Posted 2007) [#15]
SOURCE!!!!!!!!

puki(Posted 2007) [#16]
It might even be one of the nicest screenshots (of its type) ever done in Blitz.

I paid "sswifty" for his textures.

It shows how quality, realistic-looking, media can make a huge difference.

chwaga(Posted 2007) [#17]
SOURCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

*cough*ego*cough*
and yes it is a nice screenshot, are you gonna realease the code as part of a program/map editor or something or are you just gonna tease us with this image and then keep it to yourself
;-P

chwaga(Posted 2007) [#19]
yeah, source or we'll kill you! :D

chwaga(Posted 2007) [#20]
here, I made a picture for you:

Who was John Galt?(Posted 2007) [#21]
This looks interesting

Jsoren(Posted 2007) [#22]
wow, getting a little desperate chwaga?

Yo! Wazzup?(Posted 2007) [#23]
HAHA Chwaga you're doing it wrong

:D :D :D

chwaga(Posted 2007) [#24]
No, we'll eat him either way, but we'll ask our hydrochloric acid to be quick and nice if he gives us source :D

Yo! Wazzup?(Posted 2007) [#25]
And if he doesn't give us the source, we not only tell the acid to be deadly and slow, we'll grab the source from his computer :D, then burn down his most prized posessions then his house then all of his posessions then him :D

Or we could just ask him politely :D

chwaga(Posted 2007) [#26]
how about we threaten to eat his dog?

puki(Posted 2007) [#27]
I might auction it on eBay.

chwaga(Posted 2007) [#28]
if you do, I'll eat both you and the guy who bought it. then I'll eat your money. Then I'll go to the hospital

Who was John Galt?(Posted 2007) [#29]
how about we threaten to eat his dog?
If he has a dog, I bet it's a sausage dog.

chwaga(Posted 2007) [#30]
even better

Yo! Wazzup?(Posted 2007) [#31]
Oooooo.... A thoguht just came to mind... If we eat him, we will go to therapy thingies... Not fun... (not that I would know :D) Whatever lets eat him :D

Ked(Posted 2007) [#32]
This kind of slipped into fiction and off of the subject didn't it?

Yo! Wazzup?(Posted 2007) [#33]
FICTION???
Sorry.

chwaga(Posted 2007) [#34]
mmmmm.....people....

Yo! Wazzup?(Posted 2007) [#35]
especially puki... isn't pukii a pig? YUM

chwaga(Posted 2007) [#36]
definately, we'll put him in a flash-frier with season-all sprinkled on him...if he doesn't give source...
