weekly modeling comp: fantasy swords

The subject for this week's modeling competition is fantasy swords. Get all creative doing crazy swords. Think Final Fantasy and you have a good idea what direction to take.

The model should be for realtime use, thus around 1000 tris, with a texture map of 512x512. Then again, double all numbers is probably still fine, you just wouldn't want that sword being carried by a screenful of soldiers.

Winner will be announced next Monday evening (Sept 20th), so get modeling, have fun & good luck!

Akat(Posted 2004) [#2]
what i get as a winner?

Pongo(Posted 2004) [#3]
The joy of being the winner for the week, and you get to choose next week's topic. (see the previous contests,... box, chair, and raygun)

Perturbatio(Posted 2004) [#4]
If you were to win, you'd get the honour of setting the task for the next modelling competition. You lucky dog you :)

Mustang(Posted 2004) [#5]
Allrighty, this sounds something I might do... swords... easy...

mearrin69(Posted 2004) [#6]
Well, it's not a sword, but I did this one a week or so ago for a gameSpace competition.

big10p(Posted 2004) [#7]
Nice axe but that truespace/gamespace interface is giving me nasty flashbacks. *shudder* :P

Vertigo(Posted 2004) [#8]
Hello, here is my addition to the contest. I kinda got the idea that the model had to be in such a manor that legions of soldiers in a real time video game had to carry these suckers around. So I tried to get as much detail with as low of poly count as I could. Only 218 verticies, 428 faces. In theory you could have a few thousand of these things flying around the screen with absolutely no drop in fps.

I call it "The Sheep Gutters rune sword". It is carved completely out of some rare rock, found from say uh... an asteroid that fell to earth? Needless to say by the blood stains, quite a few sheep have been "gutted" with this perticular sword.

<img src="http://www.leftofcentre.net/art/final.jpg">

Texturemap is 512x512 at 16kb model size is 9kb. Created in truespace 5. Model completed in less than 15 minutes :D

Enjoy,
Scott

Joe, 2 questions:

1- Can we have 2 entries at a time, where the one you like more is judged?
2- Do spherical reflection maps count or can i have 2 at a time for the same sword?

(I'll only have one colour map)

The sword i make will also be free to use for anyone in b3d. Why the heck not. :)

Braincell(Posted 2004) [#10]
Well, these competitions seem to be dieing down eh? ...

Perturbatio(Posted 2004) [#11]
nope, I'm working on one myself, I'm just no good at texturing so it's probably not going to be finished by Monday :)
Actually, I've spent more time drawing concept art for them.

Caff(Posted 2004) [#12]
Mine's almost complete but I'm waiting to see what the competition is up to first :)

Pongo(Posted 2004) [#13]
nah,... just sitting this one out. I actually modeled some, but didn't really like them that much. Also, since my wife is expecting at any moment now I'm really not sure if I'd be able to finish it anyways.

Tracer(Posted 2004) [#14]
Entry by an 3d artist in my team.

Took him about 15 minutes, including texture.

"Took him about 15 minutes, including texture."

Didn't know it was a race ;)

Tracer(Posted 2004) [#16]
hehe, he's very very fast :)

Tracer

Braincell(Posted 2004) [#17]
Are you sure he didnt download that? hehehe

jhocking(Posted 2004) [#18]
Great work so far! I'm liking Vertigo's entry best, but there's still a couple days to go.

"1- Can we have 2 entries at a time, where the one you like more is judged?"
Sure, enter as often as you like.

"2- Do spherical reflection maps count or can i have 2 at a time for the same sword?"
As long as it's small I guess a spherical environment map is cool. Heck, I used one in the last comp so it would be kinda hypocritical to say no.

Braincell(Posted 2004) [#19]
My entry:

You can download it here(750 kb):
http://www.johnmanyverse.com/blitz/sword/main.htm
It includes the b3d file, textures, a viewer as .exe and .bb
This is FREEWARE! You are free to use this however you like for your own creations, including commercial ones. All I ask is to let me know that you are using it and what for, and then you have my permission.

3D MAX was having a bad hair day and it took me ages to export properly. Finally, there is one small black polygon but i have absolutely NO time left to fix it today. The sword has a few enivornment-mapped areas and a few normal ones. This is contained in the b3d file when I exported from MAX, and I like how it works. I did not optimise the usage of the texture as much as i could, but that is nothing too noticable. It has 734 polygons.

This is a 2-handed Greatsword, called "Windmight" (though first i was gonna call it "Oceanmight" -hence the blue colours) and it has many magical properties...

Texture (compressed)

Enjoy

Vertigo(Posted 2004) [#20]
Lenn,

Whats with it being hollow? It reminds me of a paper clip with a blue and gold handle haha. I could also see myself getting cut up pretty badly trying to clean the blood and such out of the center of it ;)

Nice work, looks like you rushed the texture though.

Peace,
Scott

Perturbatio(Posted 2004) [#21]
My meager attempt:

970 polys, 512x512 texture

My texturing sucks.

Braincell(Posted 2004) [#22]
\/Ert|g0

This sword was once a ritual sword with only the gold part as the main part. Later, a knight took the holy sword and added the blade on top, but wanted to keep the golden heart with its magical properties.
The only part that you might not understand what i wanted to achieve on is above the handle. It is supposed to be covered with a soft blue cloth-like material and the irregural darker blue patches look like that on purpose. But i guess i should do more things in a way that ppl understand what i wanted to portray without me explaining :)
As for it being hollow, I just like making unique things. The sword would still work as a weapon like this, while having more "blades" makes less resistance to cut through flesh.

And yes, the texture was a -bit- rushed...

CodeD(Posted 2004) [#24]
Okay, here is mine. Woo.

Caff(Posted 2004) [#25]
Here is "Caff's Chopper"

.b3d file with texture, and also a model viewer, here: http://www.roastpork.co.uk/stuff/caffs_chopper.zip

500 tris, 512x512 texture map

You can use the model in any game you want, just let me know you are using it so I can see it in action :)

Rob(Posted 2004) [#26]
Caff's sword RULES. It's easily the meanest, sharpest and themed blade here!

Paul "Taiphoz"(Posted 2004) [#27]
Iv still to texture mine, I will upload or replace the above image when I have the textures done.

Braincell(Posted 2004) [#28]
I dont want to sound strange but isn't it a bit odd that my post is followed by a negative comment and Caff's is 'admired' ?

Stop making friends say stuff :P

lol jk

Vertigo(Posted 2004) [#29]
I'll cast my vote on yavins... Its just got that fantasy feel... something straight out of zelda or something...

Cheers.

Paul "Taiphoz"(Posted 2004) [#30]
And with Texture

Let me know what you think.

elseano(Posted 2004) [#31]
Nice. It looks a bit too short to me though. More like a dagger than a sword...

Paul "Taiphoz"(Posted 2004) [#32]
Its a Short Battle Sword, like the ones used by the Romans.

I'v also tried really hard to capture the fantasy feel. Which I think iv done.

Caff(Posted 2004) [#33]
Yavin - Very nice, clean texture map.

Paul "Taiphoz"(Posted 2004) [#34]
Yeah its 512*512

Rob(Posted 2004) [#35]

I just liked caffs, it's nothing personal. I didn't say I disliked yours. I came across the thread and caff's just stood right out. It's not odd.

Perturbatio(Posted 2004) [#36]
Actually I like Caff's too.
Much better than mine :)

Vertigo(Posted 2004) [#37]
caffs is just too simple... and symetrical... its nice though, maybe I shouldnt comment while intoxicated? :D

CodeD(Posted 2004) [#38]
I updated my sword post, so it sucks...less. The blade is better but, as far as the handle goes can't nothing be done for it. Uh oh, I've been in Tennesee for too long.

big10p(Posted 2004) [#39]
I find Caff's the most appealing. Looks mean. You'd run away just seeing someone coming towards you holding that. :)

I like Yavin's, too, but prefer the simplicity of the un-textured version.

CodeD: Maybe you could use your sword to cut the size of your sig in half!? :P

CodeD(Posted 2004) [#40]
Bam! Burninated!

Paul "Taiphoz"(Posted 2004) [#41]
Cafs looks sort of plane, no offence it just dosent seem to have much character about it. It also looks more like a lance when seen in 3D, Duno if that was meant or not.

But it does look good.

CodeD(Posted 2004) [#42]
Hey! How bad is mine?

Paul "Taiphoz"(Posted 2004) [#43]
And the winner is................. ???

Perturbatio(Posted 2004) [#44]
Winner will be announced next Monday EVENING (Sept 20th)

CodeD(Posted 2004) [#45]
I call my sword 'THE INPROPORTIONAL POLYGONator of Doom'

(see above)

Paul "Taiphoz"(Posted 2004) [#46]
this is the 20th. Which is why I said and the winner is ... ?

CodeD(Posted 2004) [#47]
think they said the 'evening' of the 20th I will be announced the winn...i mean...the winner will be announced. Heh. Just kidding.

Braincell(Posted 2004) [#48]
Well in Europe, the evening is just coming up about now, and in the US theres still a bunch of hours left.

Paul "Taiphoz"(Posted 2004) [#49]
Ah missed that. guess the guys got to get home from work.

Beaker(Posted 2004) [#50]
Nobody can beat my Pork Sword! MUAHAHAHAH!!!11+
999 polys and a 1k procedural texture.

(apologies to Yavin for using his handle)

jhocking(Posted 2004) [#51]
Beaker's mod of Yavin's sword is a clever entry, but the winner is Yavin's original textured sword.

There y'are, the winner this week is Yavin.

smilertoo(Posted 2004) [#52]
Thats a dagger, not a sword.

Braincell(Posted 2004) [#53]
Some people have "short standards" if you know what i mean! HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! :D

Jokes ;)

Paul "Taiphoz"(Posted 2004) [#54]
Sweet thanks.
I will post a new thread and a new challenege. for this coming week.

Perturbatio(Posted 2004) [#55]
Damn, never got around to finishing this one in time.

Caff(Posted 2004) [#56]
Nice pert :)

Perturbatio(Posted 2004) [#57]
Thanks, I just wish I'd finished it.
I might still do the texture for it (although it'll probably suck big time).
