Psionic(Posted 2004) [#1]
This is a model I started today, its taken about 5-6 hours to get to this point...Still lots to do on the skin, just laying in the basic black lines and defining stuff at the moment etc...

1206 tri's so far

it'll also have several interchangeable heads

JoshK(Posted 2004) [#2]
Now that is pretty good.

Jeremy Alessi(Posted 2004) [#3]
Yeah, that's damn cool!

Perturbatio(Posted 2004) [#4]
It does look very cool indeed, but it looks like he's beeing in the rain a little too long. One hit and that rusty armour looks as though it would cave in.

jhocking(Posted 2004) [#5]
Very cool. The approach you are taking to texturing this model is a technique I keep wanting to experiment with more and keep forgetting to.

Psionic(Posted 2004) [#6]
A little more progress on the skin:-

Psionic(Posted 2004) [#7]
Made a start on one of the heads, not happy yet tho'

SopiSoft(Posted 2004) [#8]
looking great already though! :-)

Falelorn(Posted 2004) [#9]
Damn Psionic, will you learn how to model. Sheessh :p jk

Awsome work as always, Iam envious of you.

big10p(Posted 2004) [#10]
This is excellent work as always, Psionic! You dont have to rub it in by telling us how quickly you can knock out this stuff, though. :)

I have to say I like the first pic the best. The rust is very realistic and gives more character to the model, IMO. Very, very nice. ;)

mearrin69(Posted 2004) [#11]
Now that really is sweet! I love the texturing. Looks very GW - Hey, don't suppose you want to model Space Marines and Genestealers...lol ;) Nice work as always.

jfk EO-11110(Posted 2004) [#12]
very nice character.

Psionic(Posted 2004) [#13]
Thanks for all the comments!!

Mearrin69: Wish I had the time to do some 40k stuff for ya m8 ;-)

Heres a quick render in Cinema 4D:-

Bob3d(Posted 2004) [#14]
very good work, Psionic.

Rob(Posted 2004) [#15]
The back legs are really well designed. The front knees lack that special something as do the feet.

I feel a redesign of the feet and lower legs into a boot style with some tech there would raise whole look and power.

mearrin69(Posted 2004) [#16]
Wow! That looks really great - esp. for only 1,600 polys. Is that tris or quads you are counting? The skin really makes it. Nice painting!
M

[edit]Mesh looks really clean. Nice. I know this is asking a lot but I (and a lot of others) would appreciate it if you would maybe take periodic screen grabs as you work on these guys. I'd love to learn from your process. I'm sure you don't have time for a tut on each one but screengrabs might be doable! I would even host them for you if that is an issue for you.

Psionic(Posted 2004) [#17]
Tri's ;-)

Chad(Posted 2004) [#18]
Looks very nice, I'm jealous :-D

JoshK(Posted 2004) [#19]
The style is a little too punk cyborg for my tastes. I would prefer a cleaner look, with a helmet. Before you added the head, I thought it was a medieval knight.

Aside from the style, I would try a higher poly count. Modern games are in the 3000-5000 range. This looks like a Quake 2 model.

Jeremy Alessi(Posted 2004) [#20]
Looks really good though for 1500 polys. I think it's better than Quake II ... maybe Quake 3 almost. I guess it's Unreal Tournament detail.

*(Posted 2004) [#21]
halo: with decent bump mapping ya wouldnt notice ;)

Falelorn(Posted 2004) [#22]
Its a great looking model. Perfect for games.

Psionic(Posted 2004) [#23]
Thanks for the advice "halo" I'll be sure to take it all onboard, especially when I'm involved in the future with more advanced than QuakeII projects...

plus I'll make things cleaner with helmets and with a more medieval knight influences' and no punk cyborg stuff that doesn't agree with your tastes etc..;-)

poopla(Posted 2004) [#24]
Looks pretty damned cool. How much does cinema 4d cost?

boomboom(Posted 2004) [#25]
Psionic, does the base version of C4d Support normal maps?

maximo(Posted 2004) [#26]
It's good work, but I feel that it could have more shine, more highlights and more metalic feel to it so it seems more real.

big10p(Posted 2004) [#27]
I have to say (again) I REALLY like the first pic. Looks like the poor geezer has been standing on guard duty in the pouring rain for years! :)

Paul "Taiphoz"(Posted 2004) [#28]
Nah im not gona be nice at all.

I HATE YOU PSIONIC.

smamy git with his leet modeling skills.

j/k ;).. Sweet as normal, in fact they day you show me a crap model I really am gona have a go at you.

scribbla(Posted 2004) [#29]
very very nice texturing...damn i wana do stuff like that

jhocking(Posted 2004) [#30]
Quake2? Um, I think you're afflicted with the ole rose-tinted glasses nostalgia. I suggest you Google some Quake2 screenshots to refresh your memory.

I would say this guy is right on par for current consoles. Mostly because of the head I would say this falls a little short of the graphical expectations for a latest PC game. And I'm not a big fan of super high-res photorealistic heads in games anyway; more often than not the heads of characters in latest PC games have that creepy undead look of Poser models (EQ2 is a good example, but certainly not the only one.) This sort of slightly stylized look is my preference.

EDIT: I removed the link to the Quake2 screenshot.

Tracer(Posted 2004) [#31]
Uh.. Hocking.. that link goed to http://www.absolute-porno-top-100.com/ :D

Tracer

Foppy(Posted 2004) [#32]
Probably some kind of anti deep-link measure...

A great character! Looks solid and strong, a bit like Robocop.

jhocking(Posted 2004) [#33]
"that link goed to www."

Okaaaaay...

Might want to edit out that link by the way. Don't want to get banned.

Perturbatio(Posted 2004) [#34]
Might want to edit out that link by the way. Don't want to get banned.

You could always remove the link from your post too :) (It goes to that porn site for me as well).

jhocking(Posted 2004) [#35]
Really? I see the image just fine when I click on the link. Oh well, I'll remove the link. It's a screenshot from Quake2, closeup to a grunt. Seriously guys, I suggest you Google some Quake2 screenshots to refresh your memory of those graphics.

Bob3d(Posted 2004) [#36]
I remember them well.

and also fan made ones like the wonderful goblin...but usually way much lower res in textures and polies...

quake3 during the hot times whenat polycount users were really enthusiast with that (still are, imo is the type of model that polycounters have made more for fun, doing incredible artwork in some cases) I think they were about 800-1200 tris.I yet remember the times when the pc artist recommended never surpass 1000 tris and 256x256 textures...

I was in a ut2003 mod and got surprised realizing the times have arrived when a 3000 tris model was an ok thing, and it having a 1024x1024 texture for body, another for the face...

This model reminds me a lot of ut2003 models, also, has a feel of Hyper's Mole (specially the head) model.Well, wasn't HIS model, was from someone else, he used it for his today non available explendid max uv mapping tutorials...

q2 were often about 600, 700 as much 800 tris, 256x256 texture, if my memory is doing ok...The old school.

I think is well executed, and a long jump since your zombie model ;)

Blitzblaster(Posted 2004) [#37]
i say it again...Psionic your are very good in characters.
I love it !

Regards Blitzblaster

Idaho Razor(Posted 2004) [#38]
WOW I LOVE YOUR CHARACTER A LOT!!! i have been looking at a lot of your work and just have fallen in love i swear with your 3d models! it's amazing what you can do!!! do you have any tutorials written on how to model/skin a human like that :-O i'm really interested in learning how to model!

Paolo(Posted 2004) [#39]
MY GOD!!!

Psionic,
How old are you?,
Have you tried to get a job on a "big" game company?
That's stuff is just perfect!

Paolo.

Falelorn(Posted 2004) [#40]
He does contract him self out. Easier to have more control that way.

QuickSilva(Posted 2004) [#41]
Excellent work Psionic. Now where`s that last part of the generic character tutorial.....

Jason.

IPete2(Posted 2004) [#42]
Psionic,

Absolutely brilliant m8! Great model, great texturing, great guy! You are a role model for us!

You should do a video tutorial so we can all aspire to do stuff like this! :)

I got the camera and the box to take stuff directly outta the pc onto DV. If you are up for it just let me know!

IPete2.

Ruz(Posted 2004) [#43]
looks nice overall, but the proportions seem a little off. The legs seem too stumpy .or it could eb just the tighs, soemhting seems not quite right anyway.perhaps just a few verts need tweaking here and there.

you might also have problems with the knee deformation where the shin guard ends.

The eye looks a little strange also from the 3/4 view.

Would it be a good idea to put some more decals on the front also?

Psionic(Posted 2004) [#44]
Finally got round to doing a little more work on this...

latest extra head wire and textured:-

Some Armour colour variations:-

gellyware(Posted 2004) [#45]
Nice work and presentation!

JoshK(Posted 2004) [#46]
I think your blue/brown skin is the best variation. I would go for even a darker more saturated colors.

slenkar(Posted 2004) [#47]
The dark gray one looks menacing, the light gray one is cool

poopla(Posted 2004) [#48]
I like the red one! :).

Red Ocktober(Posted 2004) [#49]
the three in the middle can stay... the two on the end look a lil gay...

menacingly gay that is...

... "not that there's anything wrong with it!" :)

seriously... really nice, effective modelling... thanks for the ride along the development path as you developed these.

--Mike

wizzlefish(Posted 2004) [#50]
I agree. Also, I think you should add a helmet to some of them.

Nice texturing....

Beaker(Posted 2004) [#51]
I think you should give them all these:

to keep the rain off. :)

xmlspy(Posted 2004) [#52]
Yes, the human head needs some protection! :)

Psionic(Posted 2004) [#53]
I'll include it as an addon that you can attach to the head bone in case of a severe in-game downpour ;-))))

Hubbster(Posted 2004) [#54]
haha owned =P

Rob Farley(Posted 2004) [#55]
Seeing as we are requesting accesories:

Propellar Hat

Tommy Cooper Hat

wizzlefish(Posted 2004) [#56]
Psionic! I didn't think you would actually do it. Oh well. How about a normal, sci-fi helmet?
