Hi fellow Blitzers,

you can get Mass Effect 2 for free from Origin at the moment: https://www.origin.com/pol/en-us/store/free-games/on-the-house

Great game. Don't miss it, if you don't already have it.

Thanks for the tip Grisu.

Downloading now.

Need to sign up to origin first if you haven't already but it was quite painless and free.

Much appreciated.

You're welcome.

Sadly, I somehow posted this in the wrong forum. Should be in General Chat. :(

Well, i'm having alot of trouble getting the game to run.

ie, it won't.

The Origin Play button is greyed out.

The game, downloaded, installed, verified game files, repaired and i even updated my graphics driver.

Still no luck.

Although i'm running Windows XP, with Direct X 9.0c with shader model 3, my PC does meet the minimum spec for the game.
So it should work, in theory.
Damned annoying i don't get any error messages telling me whats wrong either.
So i have no clue as to what's wrong.

I'd be interested to see if anybody else has the game running.

@Trinosis

why not upgrade to 7? XP is good, still many users (non gaming) but that OS is more than decade ago. The game was released around 2010. At least make it to 7.

Well, i do actually own a copy of Win 7, never installed it.
Never felt the need.
And i really like Win XP.
All my next gen gaming is done on the XBox One these days.

Since this game was a freebee and met my minimum PC spec i thought i'd give it a whirl.

I might try and get the XBox 360 version of Mass Effect instead.
That should work on the XBox One.

Here are the minimum PC specs for the game.
It specifies Win XP.

Minimum system requirements

Operating System: Windows XP SP3 / Windows Vista SP1 / Windows 7
Processor: 1.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo or higher AMD CPU
Memory: Windows XP: 1 GB RAM / Windows Vista and Windows 7: 2 GB RAM
Hard drive space: 15 GB DVD ROM: 1x
Sound card: DirectX 9.0c compatible
DirectX: DirectX 9.0c August 2008 (included)
Input Devices: Keyboard / Mouse
Video card: 256 MB (supports Pixel Shader 3.0). Supported chipsets - NVIDIA GeForce 6800 or higher. ATI Radeon X1600 Pro or higher.

The following minimum system requirements apply to NVIDIA GeForce 7300, 8100, 8200, 8300, 8400, 9300, ATI Radeon HD3200, and HD4350. Video and sound card driver updates may be required. Intel and S3 video cards are not officially supported in Mass Effect 2.

My video card is a 1gb Nvidia GT240.
I'm not sure if that's the problem or not.
Like i said, i don't get any error messages.

Graphics: 256 MB (with Pixel Shader 3.0 support)
DirectX®: DirectX 9.0c August 2008 (included)
Hard Drive: 15 GB
Sound: DirectX 9.0c compatible
Supported Chipsets: NVIDIA GeForce 6800 or greater; ATI Radeon X1600 Pro or greater. Please note that NVIDIA GeForce 7300, 8100, 8200, 8300, 8400, and 9300; ATI Radeon HD3200, and HD4350 are below minimum system requirements. Updates to your video and sound card drivers may be required.

You graphics card might cause the issue:

One Person states, he made it run under Win7:

Thanks for the info Grisu.

I hadn't seen game-debate.com before. Pretty cool site.

I ran my system spec's through it for Mass Effect and although performance is quite low it should still run.

I think the issue is with the Origin client and not the actual game itself.
The Origin client simply won't let the game start.

Grisu(Posted 2017) [#10]
Did you import ME 1 save games?

Try:
Right click on the game icon from inside Origin -> Game Properties -> Disable Origin in game for this game.

P.S.: Also run the game / Origin as admin!

Trinosis(Posted 2017) [#11]
Tried that, still no luck.

I've also located a config file and ran that, everything is fine.

I also managed to create another non Origin shortcut to the game within the Origin client and that now highlights the Play icon, which i can click.
But the game still doesn't run.

The original shortcut still has the Play icon greyed out though.

I think i'll quit trying to get it working now and uninstall it.

Thanks for the link though, it was worth a try.
