I'm attempting to make a trailer for an articulated rig. I've experience of Wings3D and am tempted just to use this for simplicity, however I am downloading Cinema4D (trial version) - have any other blitzers had experince of this utility for modelling ?

if its a static mesh you need cinema 4d is a really great modeller. although im told its now possible to export an animated mesh from cinema4d ive never managed to get a working one exported. Cinema4d is one of the most easy to use modelers with an first class user interface and tools.

thankyou for your feedback Pete, whilst I was waiting for C4D to download I thought I'd create the flatbed in UU3D, extrude the bits to make the pillars, import it into wings3D then create the movable floor area and drop tail back within Wings3D, job done: what do you think ?:

Am about to fire up C4D for the first time... am I right in saying there was a version of this on the Amiga ?

The base looks very high-poly...?

Blitzplotter(Posted 2009) [#5]
Yes, I agree it was very quickly done... the whole thing looks unnecessarily poly high, if I did the whole thing in Wings3D there would have been less polys but I would have had to faff about creating the pillars individually instead of just extruding them quickly in UU3D. I think I mught be able to weld the model in UU3D if I import it again... all in good time.

cinema 4d was on the amiga as i recall although i never used it on my amiga. 3d didnt look that great then and render times were so long.

Awww Pete, I confess my humble 1200 with only 10MBytes of memory could not stretch to C4D or was it my budget that couldn't stretch I can't recall( a gargantuan 8 MBytes over the norm) was capable of rendering some amazing (oh alright at the time) fly through 3D valley sequences that you could import height level maps from DPaint. Couldn't be bothered doing that now though - mad innit.

I intend to hinge the inset flat floor and the bit at the back programmatically, high hopes but you never know. The sloping inside floor and the rear tailgate are separate entities see.

@BlitzPlotter Here's a little some thing I knocked up in a few hours (or so) in Cinema 4D. This is one of those projects that I would class as "I will go back to it later, may be in another reincarnation" type of things (more than likely after I've finished the RS MKI Escort).

The poly counts high be cause of the wheels (works out at 5305 tri's wheels + rest of the trailer). And the UV's needed more work as the whole trailer at the moment is sitting on a temporary 547x1018 texture.

One application that I think is a must is fragMotion, I used this to convert an fbx file exported by C4D to Blitz3D (using the Blitz3D pluging for C4D screws up the UV's.). I'm also told using this method works with getting animation out of C4D as well.

One thing you will find is that there are no "free" good tutorials for C4D 10+ that teach you how to use the tools. If you have the money try cinevercity or lynda.com.

@dawlane, nice looking trailer! Have you got a rig for it as well?

Cinema4D or Wings3D?

3DS Max.

@Blitzplotter
At the moment no, I'll probably do one after I've finished with the Escort RS model. At present I've done the base model and am now modeling more detail that will be baked to a texture for use with the base model.
I've just started to add detail to the front of the Escort. I cant wait to see what the texture will look like when I've scaled it down a bit.

The image on the right is a hi-poly (details only) render that will (with any luck) be baked to texture when all the detail is finished.
